This is an extraordinary place, beautifully nestled at the top of a narrow tree-lined road, designed to blend into the landscape. It's high, and the view of the sea is grand. Well appointed, with a salt-water pool and very nice communal areas. We stayed only one night, a stopover between Kona airport and the drive to Hilo. We left thinking we would like to stay again, perhaps stay two nights. Lovely hosts.

Beautiful, tranquil spot. I was very busy with tourist things during my stay & didn’t get to enjoy the hot tub & pool. Next time! I would definitely recommend this for those who aren’t interested in the hustle-bustle scene.

I was initially concerned w/lack of air conditioning and then noticed the Banyan Tree Sanctuary is at a higher elevation with beautiful weather and breezes year round. Funky, older furniture but comfortable bed, clean and very spacious room. The view of the coast is fantastic and they have their own nature trail around the property where you discover a hidden tree house and other hidden gems.

Need a place to sleep for the night near Kona. Banyan Tree Sanctuary was a quiet, beautiful place. My room was big and comfortable. I watched the sunset from the lanai. Very peaceful. Everything was clean and cozy. I did not use the pool or common area with an outdoor kitchen for I was not there for every long.
Rae was quick to text me and available by text. Rae had another commitment and she left a note on the entrance which directed me to my room. Beautful place on the end of a quiet road. Highly recommend to stay.

Very beautiful surroundings. Beautiful gardens at the facility. Awesome distant view of miles of seacoast from the Lanai outside our Sunset Suite. Beautiful sunsets. The Sunset Suite has a kitchen, so we prepared quit a few meals and ate on the Lanai at sunrise and sunset nearly every day. So restful and quiet. Get away from it all, No television, No radio. No bar, No restaurant, No gift shop. Just a place to relax, meditate and enjoy the natural beauty. There is a saltwater pool, spa and a sauna.
Easily accessible, located off the beaten path, Only 5 miles from the airport and 5 miles from Kono. The Sanctuary is on 3.3 acres of flowers, trees and orchards. Free fresh fruit from the orchard available every day. This is Paradise and the owners Benjamin, Maggie and Rae are their every day to lovingly care for the facility and grounds and assure that your stay is an experience you will cherish for a lifetime. There are only 4 guest houses available so there were only 6 to 8 other guests on the property during our 7 day stay. There is a nurture trail that is a little challenging but worth the effort. If you love peace, quiet and nature you will not find a better destination.

It was extremely quiet, we didn't have time to enjoy the pool, hot tub or sauna but everything looked very inviting

Not as advertised, we felt ripped off. The room we stayed in had no pictures on the site. We were both very disappointed.

Great great, very friendly environment. I slep like a rock with the sound of the rain hitting the leaves.

We absolutely loved our stay, the beauty and the energy is so soothing. There was excellent communication, The room was well appointed and the kitchen area very well-thought-out. So many amenities that made you feel right at home. I wish we would have stayed longer.

Our stay was heavenly! Tranquil and beautiful. I would come back in a heartbeat!

I appreciated how attentive the staff was to our needs and available if we had questions. The sanctuary has a large selection of freshly grown produce and “crack your own” macadamia nuts on the property that they generously make available for guests at no charge. The hot tub at the end of a long day was heaven and open late.

Nothing like picking fresh fruit for breakfast!

The bed was comfortable. The room was large. We never met the hosts. Texts only. Not a place we would stay again.

It was serene and beautiful. Nothing else like it on the island.

We had a wonderful stay at the Banyan Tree Sanctuary. If you read the other reviews and the Sanctuary's own description, you will get a very good idea of the place and whether it is appropriate for you.
The Sanctuary is located at the end of a one mile, one lane road built in to a hillside overlooking the shore; at the beginning the street appears suburban; by the end it appears to be in a tropical forest.
There are a small number of rooms and none of what you would expect in a resort; so if you're coming for that kind of stay you won't find what you're looking for. Actually, that's not quite true--there is a lovely pool, a jacuzzi, and a sauna--but no room service, bar, or gift shop.
Most of the time we had common areas to ourselves since the number of guests is small.
The Sanctuary it is set up for yoga, meditation, and a small number of visitors; it is a small working farm for the partners who run/manage it. For guests, there is a full kitchen where you can make your own coffee/breakfast/meals. Coffee, tea, and some fresh fruits are provided, but anything else you bring in (vegan-friendly food only).
Words like "tranquil" and "serene" recur in the reviews for a reason--it is quiet (well, there are almost always birds chirping), out of the way, and very relaxed. Sunrises and sunsets were particularly lovely.
If that sort of stay sounds good to you, I would very highly recommend Banyan Tree Sanctuary. We were very sad to leave.

Banyan Tree Sanctuary is a very unique place to stay. If you want to get away from all the resorts and get a taste of nature & hawaiian culture then this is a place for you. As soon as I arrived I was amazed at how serene and peaceful the grounds were. The pool was kept nice, along with the kitchen and their sacred temple. A couple things I noticed were if you arrive at night or early morning before the sun rises, Banyan can get a little eerie. The place doesn’t have much light besides in the kitchen and where you park your car so I had to use my flash to see where I was going. Also, after my first day, the jacuzzi was covered so it made me not wanting to bother with getting inside it unfortunately. Regardless, Banyan is as spiritual as you make it. You can meditate or do your own yoga in the sacred temple as there’s no guided sessions. Same with the massages, I had no idea where that would be taking place. Although, they do provide you with everything you need in terms of towels, ocean gear, and other amenities. All in all, I believe you don’t find Banyan but Banyan finds you. So if you’re not into a real peaceful quiet getaway then I’d suggest going to a regular hotel. You will discover yourself and get peace of mind here, guaranteed.

Owners and staff were great and so friendly and kind. If you are looking for a peaceful, quiet, quaint and unique place that isn’t your usual large chain hotel experience, I definitely recommend Banyan.

The property was beautiful and well kept. Communication with the owners was not the best as they do not answer the phone number that is listed and only communicated through the Expedia chat.

It’s called a “sanctuary” for a reason! Very quiet, peaceful location, and yet only 15 min drive to downtown. Appears the property is up for sale, so if you want to experience this oasis, I would do it sooner than later! The property is vegan only, so being an omnivore, was a little bit of an adjustment. The room is quite comfortable, but definitely not fancy. Very relaxing to stroll through the grounds.

A very quiet place overlooking the ocean from the top. It's green and neat. Guests can meditate and spend time unplugged from the real world. There is a fully equipped kitchen, and you can cook anything you want there.

The setting felt welcoming even though it was relatively isolated. The pool, although 44 feet is ideal for swimming and is salt water. A very appreciated getaway.

Beautiful, spiritual oasis - Banyan Tree Sanctuary is a labor of love - of spirituality, healthiness, love of nature, naturalness, calm, quiet. Set in a Beautiful location, with comfortable, clean, sweet rooms and settings. Its hard to describe but great to experience! Leave your worries (and animal products!) at the doorstep, come in, relax, and enjoy!

Very quiet and beautifully located in the hills just above town. Would stay there again. The only downside was because it was a Vegan only property we were not allowed to cook bring anything that Vegans do not approve of no dairy, eggs, food that contains dairy so we were forced to eat out. However having said that, the staff was very accommodating in all other areas. They even offered us a refund had we wanted to go elsewhere. But I’ll say this again if your looking for clean, inexpensive place to stay Vegan or not I highly recommended this property Mahalo!

Beautiful and QUIET and certainly not your typical Hawaiian lodging. I booked a multi-island three plus week trip with multiple stops and thought that the Banyan Tree Sanctuary would be a nice break from the typical condo/resort lodging experiences that the rest of our visit was full of. I was right - this was an out-of-the-box type of lodging. EXTREMELY peaceful and quiet - I loved it. I do recommend spending a tad more and getting you're own private cabin, I stayed in Dragon's Nest cabin. When in a "sanctuary" I want my peace, therfore when the staff PUSHED their political stances on current events I found it unwelcomed. If you're coming to Kona for convenient beach lodging this is not your place.

Banyan Tree Sanctuary was a unique place. We stayed for 3 nights in the Dragons Nest villa, which had a private attached bath. We enjoyed the plentiful fresh fruit every morning. The hot tub was out of order during our stay, but we made use of the dry sauna and fabulous pool nightly. The sanctuary grounds are beautiful, consisting of a garden and awesome view of the ocean. The shared kitchen is vegan; we are not, but had no issues respecting the values during our stay.
