If I ever go back to NY, I will DEFINITELY stay here again. I loved it. It’s really close to Central Park and subway.

I was overall very happy with the hostel stay I had. I liked the hostel itself, including the big general bathrooms per floor, activities that you can join organized by the hostel, the cafe available downstairs, the water bottle filling machines, the curtain covers for each bed and large lockers and space in my room. And most importantly I felt very safe here.
My only things that I think was not so positive was that my room had a funny smell to it (but that could have been something to do with one of the other girls staying in the room) but was a little stuffy. One of the showers in the one bathroom also had no hot water, though I just moved over to another shower and it was fine.
Overall the front desk person was great and friendly, place was clean and had a nice vibe to it. I will definitely go there again and recommend to others.

HI in NYC is an excellent if not exceptional facility. Comfortable beds, big lockers, well maintained and clean bathrooms as well as many other amenities. The kitchen, theater, patio, lounges snd more. Sometimes free tours and other activities offered. Cool place! Location is good too.

I visited there again. The staff was very unkind. It was so disappointing to me.

Elevator sound is too loud, and it bothered me all night long. Except that, not bad

It's one of the few places in NYC that is cheap. But don't expect any privacy or more than a few hours sleep each night. Also filled with rude Ukrainians atm

I stayed here for a week. Nice beds with own electricity, great atmosphere, good breakfast and lunch and great extra’s like free stand up comedian nights, free city guiding and a nice welcome party for new visitors! Very clean and well organized. Recommended!

The Hostel itself is very nice and has good potential. Clean, close to subway, nice rooms and common areas.
I was however unfortunately met with very bad staff during check-in and check-out(Same woman). During check-in we were multiple people who waited in line, and the woman sat on her phone behind the check-in desk and did not want to help. When asking her to check in she seemed very bothered, and during the process gave no info about the hostel. Was just told to sign and handed the room key.
Also worth noting that this property charges 5$ for luggage storage, even for guests. Was caught off guard with this as I have never experienced it at another property. Very bad policy for guests arriving early or leaving late that want to store their bags, so a big minus in my book.

If the folks at HI Hostels reads this, here are a few things, I noticed. Let me begin by saying, 90 percent of the staff I encountered ( and I am very low maintenance), were excellent.
Okay...You need to change or upgrade all your bed outlets to heavy duty. Every plug I used, slipped out of the outlet. Even my extension cord. You have to realize, these outlets are perched above. If you have a fast charger, they are bulky...it's futile.
Get an ICE machine...Are you kidding me?
The cafe people need an attitude adjustment. One guy, wouldn't give me a fork and knife...really?

First time staying at a hostel. It didn’t disappoint. Safe. Economical. And many amenities, such as a theater room, kitchen, pool room, café, laundry, etc.

There was a mouse in the kitchen. The cleanness also depends on luck-sometime the corridor might smell like socks, sometimes it’s ok. Staff is friendly.

Generally this place is good. Room is high ceiling. The AC is a little loud and that is the only thing I don’t like

First time in a hostel, and I checked out reviews of several. This had the best reviews, and I was not disappointed at all. Very much deserving of the good reviews.

The good: You can't get any more affordable for a stay on the Upper West Side, a 20-minute train ride from the theater district. I paid $180 for three nights in an 8-bed dorm.
However, I exchanged this low price for very poor sleep, which significantly impacted my weekend trip. This is not a slight against the hostel itself; it's just the nature of staying in a tiny room with seven other people (every morning there was at least one person getting up and making noise between 5-7 AM to pack and catch an early flight). That said, if you're a light sleeper like me, earplugs aren't gonna block out everything, and you'll spend hours awake that you should be sleeping.
Overall, the hostel was easy to get to, felt safe, and was comfortable. The bedding had hair in it, but I realize laundry doesn't magically make everything that winds up crumpled in sheets disappear. The bathrooms were clean, and I especially appreciated the private, dry area attached to each shower stall. Unfortunately, my showers each morning were cold, which was a pretty miserable way to begin a cold December day in the city. I didn't make use of the kitchen, laundry, or communal areas.
I would stay here again if I *had* to, but I think next time I visit the city, I'll save up some extra so I can get my own room at a hotel.

For 80 USD a night, I expected a bit more. The heater in the room didn't work and the bed doesn't come with a proper blanket. I ended up having 3 blankets but still had to wear a beanie during the night. The shower didn't have hot water either. For a trip during the summer this is fine but not in December. It's close do the subway which is nice.

Hi Hostel was wonderful. My first hostel experience. Bathrooms and dorm rooms were clean and they had a lovely cafe.

Overall, good. Bedding should be upgraded as mattresses are not comfortable. I feel like I’m in a military base.

Was not sure if Hostel was good fit for a solo geezer in his early 60's but so far it is great. Clean and comfy and great price.

Could not recommend the hostel anymore, staff were so helpful, the dorm was clean and tidy. The toilets and showers were clean and tidy. They had machines dor food and drink when the cafe was shut. Brilliant. Thank you

Well organized hostel in NY! Very safe with a good atmosphere. I'm young women traveling alone and this was a perfect spot for me. The common areas like big kitchen, tv room, dining area are really amazing. Sleeping room was just ok. You have to bring your own locker to cabinet or buy it for 6$ in a front desk.

Wonderful stay. Can easily access the subway with a short walk. Only a few blocks from Central Park. Rooms were clean and quiet. Bed was comfortable. Lockers were big enough to fit my luggage. Never had to wait for an open shower, bathrooms were clean. Snack bar had very reasonable and delicious food/coffee/pastries. Public kitchen was clean with lots of cooking utensils. The refrigerators were actually the only complaint. They were dirty, overpacked and had an odor to them. Commons areas were always welcoming, outdoor patio was also very nice. Would definitely stay here again!!
