This location was central to the best walks by the water for our lab and Lover’s Point and a great park for our kids. Barry and Elizabeth were fantastic hosts. Aug 2020We stayed four nights at the location. The place is very close for those looking to enjoy the peninsula and anywhere north 2 hours or south two hours. Home is in a quiet location has the dishes, towels you’ll need for the stay. Barry introduces himself the first day and let us know we could contact them with any needs. My party included my wife along with my 7 & 9 year old sons. A great place to just get away from electronics and let our kids enjoy the beauty of the ocean. Leer más

May 2022We loved the cottage, and the location. It was well equipped and was comfortable. Wish there had been a fan for the bedroom though.
There were some things however, that guests need to be aware of. Saying this has an "ocean view" is being very generous. There is a peekaboo view of the ocean between two houses in front of the cottage. And if you're standing in the back door to the deck, you can see ocean over the rooftop of the house in front of the deck. That was disappointing.
And although, the place is dog friendly, which was awesome, there isn't really a place to take your dog to do it's business, other than along the Oceanview Ave. walk, which is not that convenient, especially for those late night outings.
All in all, we did enjoy the Mermaid Retreat, and it's location.

Mar 2020We loved our time at the Mermaid Retreat. Barry was so accommodating,, checking with us to see if we needed anything.
Comfy bed, well-equipped kitchen, great to have a free washer-dryer ( and even laundry soap). Nice, thick towels, soft sheets, and permanent (not a portable space heater) radiant heat that is very powerful.
The Mermaid Retreat is ONE BLOCK from beautiful Monterey Bay. And because it is on a very quiet street, there is no traffic noise.

Jul 2022We enjoyed our week long stay at the Mermaid Retreat! The location is amazing, steps from the ocean and a short walk to many locations in town. The neighborhood is quiet and everyone we encountered was very friendly. The retreat was clean and had just about everything we needed. It is a small place and would have been a little more comfortable with a few fewer pieces of furniture. Fewer excessive items in the kitchen (mugs, frying pans, etc) would have allowed some more empty cabinet space for groceries or items we brought with us. A free standing fan would also be helpful to circulate the cool outside air through the retreat. It got pretty warm by the late afternoon when we returned from our days activities and took a long time to cool down. It seems like we were there on a particularly warm week so this may not be an issue regularly. Overall we had a great stay and recommend the property. Thank you! Leer más

Mar 2020This is a perfect spot for two people and their furry friend. It’s a half block from the ocean and an easy walk to town, grocery store or just hanging out. The PG restaurants are only four blocks away at are all excellent. Your gracious hosts are right next-door and always available to help with anything you need. Dec 2019This is a great place for couples or a small family. I was super happy that my fur babies were allowed to join us. The house is very well-stocked and is just a stone's throw from the ocean. The property owners are close and checked in to be sure we had everything we needed. We were there for the Thanksgiving holiday. We will definitely be staying again soon. Sep 2019This cottage was adorable. My husband and I eloped last week and spent our honeymoon here. We watched the sunset every single night, usually from Lover's Point since it's such a short walk away. We were within walking distance of so much to do. I really liked having a private parking spot as well as a washer/dryer. Before we left we were already talking about our next trip back to Monterey and I'm really hoping the mermaid retreat will be available! Leer más

It's a minutes walk to the beach and you don't have to deal with traffic coming through on the street because it's a private one way street. More mermaids in the house than I could count! Apr 2022The location is amazing. You are 1 block from the beach and you can see the ocean from the window. This rental is geared more toward a weekend or short-term stay. We stayed for a month so we were dependent on the internet, which was slow or didn't work, so we had to go to a different location to work (we need to zoom and the internet was too slow for it). Feb 2020Property managers were great, available and helpful and not intrusive. The house is small but comfortable with everything you need. There is a beach trail across the street which is great for running, biking, walking, or just sitting and watching the marine wildlife. Downtown pacific grove is also very close with many restaurants, coffee shops, etc. Cannery row and the aquarium are an easy 15-20 minute walk along the coast. Leer más

The Mermaid Retreat is actually larger than the pictures make it look. Big TV in the bedroom with basic cable. WiFi was fast enough for our needs (googling stuff and ordering food online). Washer/dryer combo in garage as well as 2 mountain bikes and helmets, fishing gear, bbq supplies for charcoal grill on the deck, beach chairs. Plenty of towels and bed linens. Aug 2020My husband and I stayed at the delightful Mermaid Retreat for 9 days. The location is perfect as it is only a half block from the beach! We were able to store our sea kayak there, in the garage. It was easy to take the kayak down to the beach. We enjoyed hiking, take out meals, and relaxing in this lovely cottage with a nice patio!
Barry, the owner, lives next door. He welcomed us warmly and then allowed us total privacy. We were happy to see most people in Pacific Grove wearing masks and social distancing, during this corona virus pandemic.

Apr 2021My husband and I spent a lovely week in the Mermaid Retreat and it was perfect for us! The owners have set the place up nicely and everything we needed 'house wise' was present. The weather was absolutely perfect during our stay and we enjoyed sitting out on the deck and going out for walks and adventures. Easy walk to the ocean and plenty of benches to sit and admire the view. Seeing a sunset on the ocean does require a short drive to the west side of the peninsula but easily done and plenty of places to park along the road and in some turnouts. The owners live next door, but are not intrusive, and are available for anything you might need (even have a extensive DVD library to borrow from!) The off-street parking place was a plus! It also has an amazing outside patio with a view of the ocean and a BBQ. It has a parking spot, which is rare in this area. And a washer and dryer, and bikes you can use. Oct 2020My hubby and I (and our little dog), had a lovely time here in Barry and Elizabeth's retreat. We are older and have difficulty walking very far, so to just walk half a block and be sitting on a park bench watching the seals was delightful.
The cottage was equipped with plenty of toilet paper, tissue, coffee filters, towels, blankets and a small lined trash can in every room. I am mentioning that because when we stay in condos in Hawaii for 2 weeks each time, the owners never leave more than a few days supply of anything. We appreciate not having to go out and buy supplies to last our stay.
Now, let's talk about location again. The other thing we enjoyed was the Beach House restaurant just down at the end of Mermaid Ave. We ate their twice and went for the Sunset Special, which was inexpensive and delicious ($11.95-13.95). Also, it's a must to order the Firecracker Shrimp appetizer for just $6. Terrific!
It is quiet, very private and we appreciated having an off street driveway to park our car.
Shopping in the quaint little town of Pacific Grove was really nice, with a great consignment shop with high end clothing. We love Pacific Grove!!
There was just one awful thing that happened....I lost a beautiful ring that my husband gave me for our anniversary last year! We went back to the beach and searched in the dark, we also searched in the 2 shops we had been in that day (on our anniversary this year). Never found it and I was heartbroken!
Other than that, we had a wonderful time here and look forward to coming back. Recommended the cottage to my brother and his wife and they are coming here in March.

Nov 2019Loved this place, on a quiet alley 1/2 block from the water. I felt safe and well cared for in this 1 bedroom, well stocked small house. I brought my small cat too, thanks to the owners’ generous pet policy, and that added depth to the feeling of a home away from home. I’m genuinely thankful for these kind people who share their piece of paradise with others. I’m a writer, in need of a place to think and channel my muse, and I could not have dreamed of a more ideal place. Their local contact and her adorable young daughter made the icing to the cake. Jun 2022Had a great stay in PG, this location is perfect. One street away from beach, we were able to walk to just about everything in town. Location is very quiet at night. Cottage had everything we needed for our stay. Being native Texan I was surprised there was no AC, but my Cali girl said I was silly. She was right the evenings are cool enough, a fan and cracked window does the trick. The Beach House restaurant has a great menu, food is good, liked it better than anywhere else we ate. E bike ride through 17 mile drive, highly recommended. If we come back to PG, this will be the first place we look for. Leer más
