Where Is Torremolinos?
A mediterranean resort town on Spain’s southern Costa del Sol — translating to “Sunshine Coast” — within the Andalucia region, Torremolinos is easily traversed by foot, local train, bike, or taxi. Málaga, the region’s largest city, is a few miles northeast, with the Málaga–Costa del Sol Airport located only 10 minutes from the center of town.
What Is Torremolinos Known For?
The whole town of Torremolinos and its outlying areas has a great variety of beaches, nightlife, golf, and amusement parks widely developed in the 1970’s where the architecture has largely stayed.
A Quick Guide to Torremolinos
- Calle San Miguel: The main shopping area in the heart of Torremolinos, Calle San Miguel is a winding pedestrian street lined with shops and restaurants of all kinds. There are squares on either end, and the bottom half is mostly stepped as it makes its way toward the water.
- Parque La Bateria: If you’ve had enough sand, but not enough sun, this small and lovely park called Parque La Bateria sits on a hill overlooking town and out to the water. Climb the tower for an even better view or rent a boat to paddle around the manmade pond for extra peacefulness. Parque La Bateria is well-maintained with toilet facilities and a playground.
- Aqualand: The biggest waterpark in Costa del Sol, Aqualand is packed with some good slides, pools, and a few high-octane rides. Food and lockers are available, but there are no showers so it’s wise to plan this into your day. The crocodile park is just down the street from Aqualand, where you can hold a baby crocodile for a full day’s double-header.
Popular Destinations Near Torremolinos
- Garganta del Chorro: An hour northwest of Torremolinos is one of Spain’s greatest natural wonders: Garganta del Chorro, a three-mile long limestone gorge set among pine forests, popular with rock climbers and hikers. El Caminito del Rey is 300 feet off the ground and traverses the canyon. Built in the 1920’s, it has fallen into disrepair, but parts of Garganta del Chorro are still available for guided tours.
- Castillo Monumento Colomares: Castillo Monumento Colomares is a fascinating, modern castle-shaped monument to honor Christopher Columbus, who sailed from this area to discover the New World. This contemporary oddity is located in Benalmádena — not far from Mariposario de Benalmádena, a butterfly garden housing 1,500 specimens in a Thai-style temple next to the Buddhist stupa, which is the largest of its kind in Europe.
Best Neighborhoods in Torremolinos
- La Carihuela: Historic fisherman’s village found south of town near the water — and a short walk to Benalmadena marina — La Carihuela is a pleasant promenade found parallel to the waterfront. It is lined with cafes, bars, restaurants, and accommodations where you can enjoy the best seafood in town, including the regional specialty of fried fish. The trendy nightclub scene makes La Carihuela come alive at night.
- Playa de los Álamos: Playa de los Álamos is a serene beach north of town where there are beach chairs and umbrellas to rent, or you can stroll for hours along the beautifully long coastline. It is a family friendly area with playgrounds and summer screenings of movies, in addition to the standard array of beach bars, restaurants, and shops.
- Benalmádena: A town south of La Carihuela, Benalmádena is known for its marina, beaches, and Tivoli World amusement park. Puerto Marina is home to Sea Life Benalmádena, an aquarium park, and many visitor’s yachts. The butterfly garden and Buddhist stupa are also located in this neighborhood.
