Where Is Interlaken?

A resort town in the Bernese Oberland Alps of central Switzerland, Interlaken occupies a narrow strip of mountain valley between two lakes, hence its literal sounding name. The area can be accessed by boat, train, or a combination of both coming from either Bern, an hour to the west; or Lucerne, two and a half hours northeast. The closest airport is Bern, 24 miles away, but Zürich Airport may provide more options depending on origin, and is approximately two hours north. It’s easy to explore Interlaken on foot, bicycle, taxi, or train.

What Is Interlaken Known For?

Interlaken is most popular as a base camp and transport hub for all the outdoor adventures available in the mountains and on the lakes, but the city itself is also a worthy destination. No matter the season, there is plenty to do. In winter there is skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing, and sled riding. In summer, visitors can go hiking, sailing, skydiving, explore ruined castles, ziplines, and helicopter tours. Cultural delights, including the famous Swiss chocolate, cheeses, and watches are available to take home.

A Quick Guide to Interlaken

  • Harder Kulm: Set behind the town of Interlaken and centered between the two lakes is a platform and restaurant called Harder Kulm, offering the best views of the area, including the town, both lakes, Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau’s peaks. It is accessed by a ten minute cable car ride and then a ten minute walk to the bridge. The cable car is only operational two months per year, otherwise, it is a two and a half hour hike.
  • Höhematte: A spacious, open park in the middle of town, Höhematte is ideal for relaxing and taking in the mountain views towering over the town or watching the paragliders land in front of you.
  • Thunersee Viewpoint & Weissenau Panoramic Point : Both Thunersee Viewpoint & Weissenau Panoramic Point are located near each other at the end of Interlaken West, past the ferry terminal on the edge of Lake Thun. These two spots provide expansive views of the lake and the mountains.
  • Spiez Castle: Take the train to Spiez to visit the ancient castle, church, and gardens that are perched at the water’s edge. The original castle was built in 933 and has been lovingly restored to now include a museum and shop. The museum houses displays of armor, weaponry, art, and other cultural artifacts specific to the area.
  • St. Beatus Caves: A 30-minute boat ride from Interlaken West is St. Beatus Caves. The area is made up of a series of caves consisting of dramatic rock formations, as well as underground lakes inside and waterfalls outside.

Additionally, the area is home to the Trümmelbachfälle and Staubbach Waterfalls, two sets of glacial waterfalls along narrow paths with stunning views. There is a long cable car from Stechelberg village to Schilthorn mountain for a less tiring way to view the scenery, or you can also use it to get further before beginning a hike. Outside the village, there are observation decks to hike to or take the train. The area is the true gateway to the Jungfrau Region where the crowning glory peaks at 13,642 feet.
  • Bern: A small city only an hour west of Interlaken, Bern is best known as the capital of Switzerland and for its old town, which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its preservation. Bern is perched on a hill and surrounded on three sides by the Aare River, making its boundaries clear and immovable. The city was founded in the late 12th century and developed through the 15th century. Many of its landmarks including some fountains, clock towers, roads, and buildings still remain from that time. The old city, museums, parks, and gardens are the main attractions, but the town is also known for hosting arts and music festivals through the summer months.
  • Zürich: Long known as a major financial center and one of the world’s most livable cities, Zürich is a three hour drive or a six hour train ride north of Como, sitting at the head of its own namesake lake. The ancient city center is well-preserved, while the surrounding areas have embraced modern architectural trends and transformed old buildings into new cultural hubs. The city is hip and edgy, especially with the vibrant nightlife in Züri-West.
