Load up the beach cart and stroll over the tidal creek to the beautiful beach or try your hand at surf fishing. Relax on the beach under our shibumi shade. No need to buy, rent, or bring your own as we provide one for you. Wash the sand from your feet in the private hot and cold outdoor shower. Put an umbrella in your drink and grab a book as you relax on the backyard deck. Whip up a gourmet meal in the well-stocked kitchen or grill out on the back-yard deck. For a rainy day, John's Crab Shack comes equipped with plenty of games, puzzles, and books to keep the whole family entertained. overall good. The property needs some updating.. There is a major dripping in the tub in the master bathroom. There is too much "stuff" all around in the closets and in the kitchen.

The house, though older, was just right for our needs. The owners must be artistic as the interior walls are painted with multiple happy colors. The walls throughout are also adorned with brightly colored artwork. The location is excellent, very close to the water, quiet neighborhood with lovely areas to walk about in. Bicycles, kayaks, scooters, etc. available just as described. A nice large deck leads to a fenced in back yard. The nextdoor neighbor loaned us some rakes as the yard was covered in acorns and small limbs that would have been perfect for the backyard firepit. Unfortunately, we didn't do much raking or build a fire. The bike I chose had a flat tire and the airpump nozzle didn't fit the tire so I took a few good walkabouts instead. Ample sleeping, dining, and lounging areas throughout. My friends and I were very comfortable and our dogs had a great time exploring the back yard. Other than a stove that neither of us could figure out to use (nice and new) plus a more detailed cleanup list (prior to leaving) than I expected, our stay was most enjoyable. We also had great weather. Oak Island and nearby Southport offered multiple restaurants, antique and thrift shops and the traffic wasn't bad at all. I'd love to come back with my grands to take advantage of all the sports equipment provided by the hosts.

This was probably our 5th time staying at Johns Crab Shack. It is a much loved home that could use some maintenance and deep cleaning, but that's neither here nor there, because we didn't vacation to the beach to critique a house; we went to enjoy family, friends, the beach and restaurants.
This home has LOTS of room. We always put together a large puzzle on the dining room table and/or play games. Adults can hang in one living room, teens hang in the other. New for this year was a Shibumi shade. And having the beach wagon made for a very easy walk to the beach. I wish we had more time so that we could have used the kayaks. If you like to read, there are tons of books to choose from. And room fans for white noise. Yes!!
The owner left us a vase of beautiful home grown flowers upon our arrival. Charcoal too. We had everything we needed to have a cookout and other dinners and breakfasts (except for a scrubbing pad, but the Dollar General remedied that.) The washer does have a crack in the glass, thus a small leak when in use, but we simply put a hand towel down, and all was well.
It is wonderful that we could bring our pups with the fenced yard. And the next door neighbor, Ken, is very nice. Love the outdoor shower!
We will definitely return to John's Crab Shack because of the convenience of the walk to the beach, and everything else in OKI, the comfort, and the roominess. And more so, communication with the owner. Very responsive and nice to work with.

We loved the house! Had more room than we expected which was great and super cute! We left some water stuff in the garage for the next kids as we didnt need them (: Our only dislike was the amount of dog hair that came out from under the furniture.

The home was spacious. The kitchen was fully equipped. The home had paper towels and toilet paper, even dishwashing soap and laundry soap. These items aren’t standard with a rental, so it was a nice addition. The towels and sheets were adequate. The master bed is FIRM. My husband didn’t mind it (back sleeper) but I (side sleeper) could barely sleep.
It was nice to have TVs everywhere and access to multiple streaming apps to keep everyone happy in between activities.
The location is pretty good but if you have young children, the walk to the beach along with your stuff can be rough on a hot day. The wagon was helpful but if I stayed here again I would rent a golf cart without a doubt. We didn’t use the kayaks or bikes but that’s a great touch!
Check in process was as easy as you can get.
The washing machine leaks- I messaged the host who was already aware. It was nice to be able to wash and take home clean clothes!
The yard could use some TLC- you drag a lot of leaves in from the outdoor shower area.
The host has a book of rules and other outdated recommendations. The book mentions that the host is aware the home is older and could use some updates. It is clear they’ve done some updating and that there’s room for more.
I was aware at booking that the home is dog friendly- as such, extra cleaning is necessary. Cleaning fur from under the furniture for example should be standard b/n guests.

Tons of room, bedrooms are spread out. Multiple living rooms. Fenced in yard with a deck for the dogs to lay out in the sun. Would recommend and will stay again.

A comfortable, roomy home. Kitchen has everything you need.Easy walk to the beach. Lots of toys available for all ages. A couple of different living spaces that work for a little variation in style( teen and videos in one room, read in the other).
We took the kyaks out one day, road bikes ( bring a pump)
walked down to the beach and in general had a great little family trip.

Our two dogs loved the fenced in back yard. House was clean and accommodated all our needs. Close to beach and all restaurants. We will definitely consider staying here again.

The house overall is in a good location and a cute neighborhood. However - I arrived at 345 with a check in time at 4. There were several people there when I arrived and they had pets in the house. A woman came out and said she was cleaning it !! However the dogs were in the house until 4. The floors were sandy and dirty , the beds were not made and I had to clean out the drains in both bathtubs full of sand and hair - gross. Also the house needs pest control. And to end the vacation - the instructions were to clean the floors and bathroom even though I paid a cleaning fee.

We have been coming to Oak Island and staying at the Crab Shack off and on for about 15 years, and it is always great! Tim and Rebecca are great about communication, and each year there are nice updates to the house that we appreciate.

Walk to the beach was short (but hot) and the provided beach wagon made it much easier. The neighborhood is nice and quiet with plenty of shade trees. Outdoor shower was great and enjoyed by all after days at the beach. House was very comfortable and a/c worked well. We liked having two separate family rooms. The fenced yard is relatively small but it was nice to be able to let our dog out. Overall, we found the house to be a great value based on its location and amount of space it offers compared to other rentals we looked at.

We were able to make breakfast and dinner each day with the stocked kitchen. It is located in close proximity to Southport-Walmart and movie theater and Holden Beach where we went jet skiing. We found a new ice cream favorite in Lil and John’s Sweetreat that is only minutes away. The beds are ultra comfy! I have already looked to see if the property is available for next summer.

We had an amazing stay here! My parents are selling their home and needed to get away from the stress/be out of the house for showings over the weekend. We brought my 3 kids and 2 dogs along for the vacation. The kids loved the bunk bed room and the dogs loved the fenced in yard. Great, quiet location with a quiet beach. Quirky, fun house with lots of personality! We loved it and hope to return in the future.

Four bedrooms are all excellent. Agin, fully stocked, linen, towels. Bonus is the back deck, fenced in yard and working grill. We used it several times. Even for breakfast. Very private!

Perfect Getaway!
