This warm, welcoming, newly-built and finely crafted studio cottage provides modern comfort while retaining the spirit of old Hawaii. This mountain paradise is surrounded by native trees and a tropical garden. The Cottage at Ohia Place is situated in North Kona, at a cool 1600' elevation on Mount Hualala'i in Kaloko Mauka. The cottage is in close proximity to Kailua Kona village, shopping, restaurants, beaches, activities, the harbor, hiking trails and upcountry golf courses. The airport is 15 minutes away. Your host, Gale, lives on the 1.5 acres shared with the Cottage. The accommodation features open beam wood ceilings, ohia hardwood floors, mahogany and granite kitchen, brand-new queen -sized bed (with a Memory Foam topper), large slate shower, fully equipped kitchen and a lovely lanai that enhances the inside/outside lifestyle of Hawaii. The cottage is 720 sq feet under roof, including the lanai. Your host will provide you with details about the many island activities, tours, sight-seeing, beaches and cultural experiences as well as shopping and restaurants, all within an easy driving distance from your home. Born and raised in Kona, the host's father was one of the founders of the sports fishing business in Kona in the early 50s; she and her family remain closely involved with the fishing community. She has spent her professional life welcoming guests and connecting them to the rich traditions of the islands. We love the island of Hawaii: the vastness, the colorful and unique local customs, the sunshine and sunsets of the Kona Coast, and the hunting and fishing traditions of the Big Island. A vintage picnic basket is available for your pleasure. If you're headed out to explore the island. You are welcome to use a cold bag for shopping, cooler, beach chairs and towels. Loved our stay at Gale’s. Super private and amazing views. This is our favorite area to stay on the island because it’s convenient to everything but also tucked away and completely private. Enjoyed all our breakfasts on the lanai and a few dinners watching the sunset. The cottage is so well appointed and luxurious feeling this will definitely feel like a vacation away from home. Stocked with everything you need and all the details (just note there is no dishwasher or oven - no problem for us) and the WiFi is a tad on the slow side (again no problem for us since we didn’t have to do any work) 100% would recommend and will come back if we have the chance to!

The property was beautiful and had everything we could have needed. Gale was very helpful during check in and throughout our stay. She was very open to giving suggestions and answering our questions promptly. We did a lot of adventuring during the days but this place is definitely somewhere that you could just hang out all day and relax if you wanted. We are very happy that we chose to stay at Gale’s property.

We had the most amazing time here. Gale is an amazing host, and her banana bread is indeed fabulous. She even let us check out *super* late on our last day. The cottage was extremely well appointed (the washer and dryer was especially well appreciated). She has thought of pretty much everything - supplies for the beach, reef-safe sunscreen, coffee and fruit when you arrive, etc. The only tiny thing I would mention is that the cottage has no AC. But even for someone like me who runs hot, we had no issues at all with the temperature (staying in late October probably helped a lot). There is a nice breeze that runs through the cottage. We would definitely stay here again. Thank you so much Gale!

This was the most relaxing 10 days we have ever had! Gale is an incredible host who has created such a beautiful place that is even better than what you see in the pictures! Sitting on that beautiful porch every morning just enjoying a delicious cup of Kona coffee, listening to the birds and roosters crowing off in the distance and just taking in the sights of her beautiful property was pure Heaven! The yummy banana bread was the "frosting on the cake"! We did hiking, snorkeling with the Manta Rays, Captain Cook and exploring. Each time we could hardly wait to get back to the porch and just relax. Thank you Gale for sharing your place with us!! I would give it 10 stars if i could!!!!

This was our second time staying at the cottage and it was just as awesome as we remember! The location is the perfect jumping off point for all activities but it beautiful enough to just stay at all day as well! We will be back again!

This was a fantastic little spot to relax from daily activities! My wife and I really enjoyed how "far away" from town this rental is. It's not a long drive to town, but really feels like it is so much further away as it is really quiet. (and about 10-15 degrees cooler than the beach below made for very nice for sleeping in the middle of July) The grounds are beautifully taken care of and we loved enjoying our breakfast on the lanai each morning. Gale seems to have thought of everything. From the fresh fruit and scrumptious banana bread to the beach chairs and umbrella for outings, we really didn't need anything but the usual groceries. :-) It was a wonderful stay and we will be back, I'm sure!

We spent a dreamy 10 days exploring this beautiful island with the cottage as our home base. It was PERFECT. The cottage is very clean, and it became a joke between us that, of course, Gale (the lovely host) thought of it...because there was never anything we needed that she hadn't thought to include in the cottage. It is beautiful inside and out, very private, away from town--yet so close. The bed is comfortable, the temperature stays nice inside the cottage, the tap water is good to drink. Gale, who grew up on the island, gave us fantastic hiking recommendations. We came exhausted and left refreshed. It couldn't have been more perfect. Mahalo! :)

It would be easy to get carried away after such an excellent experience, but I'll try to contain myself: This is the kind of property and host I hope for every time I book, and my first truly 5-star experience in several years, anywhere in the world and via any booking platform. If I return to Kona, I'm calling Gale as soon as I have dates. As host, she is generous, professional, and considerate. I have immense admiration for her thoughtful, intentional curation of space and feel. The kitchen is exactly what's needed and as described, immaculately equipped. Access is easy and secure, <15 min from Kona. It's private but has views of the endless Pacific. The home is elevated from the heat of Kona, so afternoons are cool and temperate, with frequent, meditative rain in the afternoon. The windows never need closing. The frogs and crickets are magical nighttime sleep aids. Laundry! An elegant, spacious indoor shower, and its outdoor complement! The lanai was actually hard to leave even for planned adventures -- a perfect place to read, talk, or eat. My wife and I are grateful and already wistful thinking of our time here, which was the unquestionable highlight of an excellent vacation.

Look no further. We use VRBO & others A LOT, and this is top tier for sure. If you care about quality, in everything from the cabin construction, to materials, to amenities, to communication and customer experience, to location, to comfort….it’s all really high end and left us feeling like we had a really special vacation that we’ll remember forever. At 1500’ you have rainbows and intermittent sun and mist, and the temps are perfect- not chilly, as I had worried. I sat outside in shorts for breakfast each morning, and then drove down into heat for beaches (a short & easy drive). Being up in a very quiet, tropical neighborhood (the Kona coffee belt) felt like “real Hawaii” to us, and Gale’s landscaping is off the charts- so it’s quite a spectacular backdrop. The birds and frogs keep the sounds of the tropics going, and far off roosters too (the property is all gated, so that limits what wanders in). The bedding was great, and we slept very well. Gale left us with local treats (coffee, fruit, banana bread), which supplemented our breakfast all week long. We ate there for most dinners, and loved the well-stocked kitchen. This place is the real deal. We went to the Four Seasons for lunch after our flight, then headed up to the cottage. A fun way to start the trip, and also made us so happy about our choice. This place does not disappoint, and Gale also makes it amazing. Seriously, it is a total 5-star experience.

I can't say enough about our stay at this beautiful property! To start with, the property itself is stunning. Gale has done an incredible job, not only on the cabin itself but also on the surrounding landscape. The photos on the listing show it but it is even more beautiful. Gale met us at the gate to the property and gave us a tour of the cabin and property as well as some very good suggestions on where and what to do while there. As mentioned in other reviews, the fresh baked banana bread was exquisite as well as the fresh fruit, especially the Apple Bananas. The furnishings were all very comfortable, especially the bed. We both slept very well, which is rare for us on trips. Gale warned us that the tree frogs might get too loud for us but we actually enjoyed their beautiful serenades every night. Kona Coffee every morning on the lanai was a highlight for me. The property is located in an area that is very convenient to everything you would want to do on the island, just minutes from Kona and beaches as well as quick access to the Saddle Road. Gale even worked with our daughters to give us a great surprise for our anniversary! All in all an amazing stay! Thank you so much Gale for making it extra special!!

Gale is the ultimate host! The perfect mix of attentive while giving us privacy. The cottage is beautiful, very clean and well appointed. The bed was very comfortable! Everything is exactly as depicted on her VRBO site. It is a quiet place for those not wanting to be in the busy downtown tourist hustle and bustle. It is a bit of a drive up the hill but worth it. Loved our peaceful getaway!

My husband and I had the most incredible vacation in the cottage. The property was absolutely breathtaking - It was like having our own paradise. From the moment we arrived, we were in awe of the stunning views and the beautifully landscaped gardens. The interior of the cottage was just as impressive, with high end furnishings, and all the amenities we could have possible needed. It was clear that no expenses had been spared in creating this luxurious and comfortable space. We loved spending time outside, lounging on the lanai and taking in the gorgeous sunsets. The location of the cottage was also perfect - it was situated in a quiet neighborhood just a short drive up the mountain and in close proximity to some of the best beaches, restaurants, and attractions on the island. We loved exploring the area and taking in all the natural beauty that Hawaii has to offer. Perhaps the best part of our stay, though, was the exceptional hospitality we received from the cottage owner (Gale). She was incredibly accommodating, and she went above an beyond to ensure that our stay was comfortable and stress-free. The fresh baked banana bread and basket of fruit upon our arrival was such a nice added touch. Overall, our experience at the cottage was nothing short of amazing, and we would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a quaint and unforgettable vacation. We loved our ten days of bliss. The back porch gave us a lovely setting for drinking 100% Kona Coffee and eating her homemade banana bread! Our hostess was gracious and made us feel very wecomed. She gave us very valuable information. She always steered us with her truth. Very comfy bed and the accommodations were well thought out. Attention was given to the smallest detail. This was a beautiful well appointed and decorated cottage. Gale our host was exceptional offering homemade banana bread and asst fruits. She had suggestions to our questions about the area and offered assistance should we need at any time. The property is filled with gorgeous plants and even had geckos, tree frogs and lots of birds. All activities are a short drive away. Gale has thought of everything you might need for living at the cottage, even beach towels a cooler and chairs if headed to the beach! I highly recommend this property! Thank you Gale!!

This property surpassed expectations. Beautifully appointed, inside and out with great thoughtfulness in every detail. The kitchen is very well equipped, and the bed is very comfortable. The space is light and airy with high ceilings and windows in every direction for great air circulation while retaining a sense of privacy, quiet and beauty. The views from our spacious lanai are stunning and we found it hard to leave this place to explore the island. Gale, our host, went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. She was considerate, kind and understanding. Loved the homemade banana bread, coffee and fruit that welcomed us after our long flight.

There really aren't words in my vocabulary that would do justice to the incredibly perfect stay enjoyed this past week. Every detail imaginable was addressed prior to my arrival, and I was greeted by Gale when I pulled in. She gave me the tour of the property, and I immediately knew that I had hit the gold mine with my choice of my Hawaii accommodations. The property is absolutely gorgeous in every conceivable way, both the architecture and the atmosphere. I was visiting as a participant in the Ironman Triathlon World Championship, and knwowing of the nervousness, chaos and crowds associated with the race environment, I wanted to distance myself from that as much as possible. I was concerned about the cottage not having air conditioning, but the cool mountain air was absolutely perfect. I spent every sunrise and every sunset sitting on the front porch, completely unplugged from the rat race and so filled with the calm of my new home. The drive down to Kona Town is so easy (about 10 minutes), but I found myself wanting to spend my time up on the mountain more than on the coast, as the views are stunning, as well as the sounds of nature at the cottage. And then there is Gale. She greeted me with a smile and a hug, along with home made banana nut bread, a basket of fresh fruit and a welcome of genuineness. She checked on me throughout my stay, yet she never "bugged" me. She even cared enough to come down to Kona on race morning to cheer me on. I could go on and on and feel like I am rambling with my high praise of this amazing, lovely property, but I'll refrain and close by giving it the highest marks possible. It was just perfect. Everything we read about this property and owner was true and beyond! The casita is beautiful and so lovely and comfortable. Gale’s attention to detail made us feel totally cared for. The setting is magnificent. Everything is close by, yet being up in the hills a bit brought cooler temperatures and delightful trade winds which we so appreciated, particularly after hot beach days. We were welcomed by Gale with much warmth and her famous banana bread, fresh fruit and Kona coffee. She has books and brochures galore to help make your plans. The kitchen was stocked with all the basics to get us started on a truly fabulous vacation! We can’t wait to go back!

We have visited all of the islands and stayed many places, but this cottage is our favorite of them all!! Gale loves making sure her guests are happy and it certainly shows in her attention to every little detail. Our home away from home was spotlessly clean, very comfortable and well-stocked with everything we would need. We loved having kona coffee and breakfast each morning on the lanai as well as most dinners there watching the sunset. Truly a magical place that we hope to return to many times!!
