We enjoyed our stay - it was unique and lovely.

Lovely, and very well equipped cottage so you can prepare your own meals etc. Was also great to have bikes and kayaks, and BBQs to use. Close to airport and Kapaa town.

Current bridge construction works nearby (on main highway) could be noisy at times.

We love Fern Grotto and will return.

This was our second time at Fern Grotto. Paul is a very polite and thoughtful host and his staff is very friendly. We stayed in Garden cottage which was recently renovated. Perfectly charming and a great location. Well stocked and beach gear is always available.

A perfect getaway.

The quality of the setting, the room, and the experience was outstanding. A nice quiet inn is a great contrast to the cookie cutter resorts. Conveniently located at a midpoint of the island and right on the river, we could easily access Kapaa, and both the north and south coasts were a reasonable drive. Floating the river on the inn's kayaks was a great day experience. The room was well put together and charming. The staff had clearly put a lot of thought into amenities large and small that made the trip very convenient.

They thought of everything!!

We stayed in Coco B a studio type condo. It was perfect for my husband & I. There are islands of outdoor seating through the property. There is a star fruit tree right outside where you can pick ripe fruit! The landscaping was beautiful, providing private nooks throughout. It was very peaceful and quiet-except for the roosters, lol. The staff there has thought of everything! We arrived to find beer and chocolates in the fridge, ice cream in the freezer, coffee and spices, flowers through the condo, towel swans on the bed, laundry products at the laundry sheds—there were more amenities than we knew! Bicycles and kayaks are available for use by guests, with a kayak launch just a few steps away! Also in the kayak area are snorkels, fins, coolers, water shoes-pretty much anything you may have forgotten or need for an excursion!

Access to the beach required a short walk down a busy street and across a busier one. Not a big deal unless you were counting on using the nearest beach frequently.

Superb relaxing stay in Kauai

Had the most amazing stay at Fern Grotto Inn. It's a very cozy property with different sized guest houses and cottages. I stayed in CANAL A (Perfect for one person or 2 max). I was welcomed / greeted with a beautiful tropical floral arrangement. There were hibiscus flowers all over the room. The provided me a fresh lei on one of the towel arrangements, that I got to wear around my 1st day there. The place was so immaculate and clean! It was cleaner than my own house! It made me feel so good! Housekeeping prepared a welcome card and note with phone #'s for calls and txts. There was a kauai guidebook on the coffee table. They also had a binder with alot of tips, local recommendations and guides. The mattress is nice and firm, pillows are of a good quality. You will get wonderful sleep there. The plumbing worked well. The hot hot showers were amazing. It is on a removable shower head (just like I have at home) that is so convenient. You do have to take out your own trash, but they provide the trash liners under the bathroom sink. Paul and housekeeping happened to be on site when I arrived. They greeted me so warmly. I was having pain in my knees, and needed help with my luggage. Paul was so kind and helped me out. Cottage A was a charming studio. With a queen sized bed. There is absolutely everything you could need. Paul even prepared 2 beers, 2 water bottles and a box of chocolate in the fridge. It has both a fan and A/C wall unit that works very well! The kitchenette is stocked with everything you could need in terms of appliances, cookware, utensils, houswares, and even tupperware and ziploc bags. The cottage was well stocked with towels, bug spray, sunblock, extra blankets, etc. It was so thoughtful. Oh and the property has free laundry for the guests. They even provide laundry soap. It was outstanding. Such a huge blessing.

Excellent place to stay with an ideal location!

We loved Fern Grotto! Thoughtful gestures from the host - they provided us with thoughtful welcome gifts and information. Lots of amenities on site that were complimentary - kayaks, bicycles, Paddle boards, reef shoes, cooler boxes, etc. It really made the stay effortless and so easy!

Access restricted estate would've provided more peace of mind. Small stove (one plate)

Our stay was magical and relaxing. The grounds were a beautiful garden on the Wailua River.

There was a very well equipped kitchen with everything you need to cook for yourself (and surprise treats and flowers to welcome you). There is also a delicious local breakfast/lunch/coffee place a short walk away.

When the road work is finished, access will be paved with sidewalk and turn lane.

Very comfortable cottage with a very well equipped kitchen. Noise a problem.

Cottage was very well equipped and in excellent condition. Looked like it had been newly renovated. Very comfortable indeed. Well located.

Noise. Other cottages were being renovated during our stay. Jack hammering etc. Also, noise at all times of day & night from ‘park’ area next door.

Very spacious apartment, beautiful grounds, excellent location, friendly hosts. An Alexa playing with Hawaiian music on when we arrived. Very comfy beds. Good airconditioning. Good wifi.

It was expensive, but that's like almost every other place on Hawaii nowadays.

It was a lovely place to stay

Location was ideal. Paul had everything you could possibly need to enjoy the island; beach chairs, towels, boogie boards, coolers, snorkels and masks, etc. Laundry facility was so nice to have. Having kayaks and bikes right there to use was just great! On arrival, the cottage was decorated with fresh flowers and had some treats waiting for us. The kitchen was really well stocked.

The air-conditioner was really loud as it filled to begin its cycle. Woke us up every time. We needed to run it due to allergies and to drown out the roosters and road noise.

Paul and his staff at Fern Grotto were great. They had a very personal touch with a card on arrival. There are bikes,kayaks, and paddle boards for your use. Great access to the river. Very close to beaches and hiking and food trucks.

Beautiful property and thoughtfully managed

Paul is an incredible host, and one of the more thoughtful people I’ve ever come across. The property is beautiful and well-maintained, and my unit was so nice that I spent as much time there as I did exploring Kauai. I made the brave decision to visit Kauai during COVID and without a car and Paul was kind enough to show me around and point out the best places to eat in Kapa’a. Also, the units are isolated enough where you have complete and total privacy if you’d like, but close enough to effortlessly come out and mingle with other guests. There’s a less popular beach that’s about a 5-minute walk and while it probably won’t be crowded compared to the others, it’s an amazing place to watch the sunrise. I also enjoyed standing out on Paul’s property and watching some equally stunning sunsets as well.
