Battambang: A laid back city northwest of Phnom Penh, Battambang has spent much of its history under Thai law despite being within Cambodia. The city is known for having a small-town feel even if it has a population of 200,000 residents. Many visitors use the city as a base for visiting nearby temple ruins and the floating villages on Tonle Sap Lake. The locals have geniously invented the bamboo train on disused rail tracks, which is used to transport both goods and people just a few miles up and down the line. Central Market: A massive maze of a covered market, Central Market is located in a 1930’s Art Deco building that offers anything one could possibly imagine, from flowers to stationary, or even shoes.
Night Market: Down by the riverside, the Night Market has clothes and souvenirs up for grabs, but is best known for the food stalls! Grab a bite and get the true local experience while sitting on a mat on the ground.
Russian Market: Russian Market sells imperfect goods produced in large local factories for companies such as Levis and Ralph Lauren at a heavily discounted price.
Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda: Sparkling with glass tiles, the Royal Palace still remains as the residence of the King of Cambodia. Certain parts are open to the public including the Throne Hall, the Silver Pagoda, and a few buildings around them. The Silver Pagoda received its name because of the 5,000 silver tiles covering the floor that weigh five tonnes. Nearly everything inside the temple is made of precious metals or gemstones, including a life-size solid gold Buddha encrusted with over 2,000 diamonds.
Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum: A school turned into a prison where 14,000 citizens were brutally tortured and killed over a 4-year period from 1975 to 1979. The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum has many rooms that remain in the state of their use. The exhibits include many graphic photos, instruments of torture, cracked skulls, and a video made by survivors who were only 12 during this horrific event. Audio tours allow visitors to understand it all while moving at their own pace. The outside gardens are a surreal juxtaposition to the horrors the prison contained. Not an experience for the faint of heart, but it is surely life changing if you decide to go.
The Killing Fields of Choeung Ek: Another sobering site not meant for the tender-hearted — but not as graphic as Tuol Sleng — is a former Chinese cemetery called The Killing Fields of Choeung Ek. It’s located 30 minutes outside of the city, and was once the grounds where the Khmer Rouge used to kill thousands of victims. The ground is uneven with plenty of graves, and at the centerpiece is a glass-walled memorial filled with 8,000 skulls.

What Is Phnom Penh Known For?

Phnom Penh has an interesting, but not always obvious European influence due to its long colonial relationship with France. Before 1970, it was known as “Paris of the East.” Historical temples, classical architecture, bustling markets, and Cambodian edginess hide wide boulevards and a quaint riverfront, but only a few French-built buildings still remain intact. Modern Phnom Penh is a good place to explore for a few days and learn about the history and culture of Cambodia before exploring other locales.

Where Is Phnom Penh?

Cambodia’s capital and largest city of Phnom Penh sits at the confluence of the Mekong, Tonle Sap, and Bassac Rivers in the southern part of the country. The city is logically laid out, but the bus system is not comprehensive. Moto-taxis, tuk-tuks, and taxis are the best way to get around.
