Frequently asked questions

Where Is Karachi Located?

Located in the far south of Pakistan, Karachi is the capital of Sindh province. The southernmost edge of the city is on the Arabian Sea near the Gulf of Oman, and Jinnah International Airport is 40 minutes northeast of the city center. Getting in, out, and around the city is easily done by train, bus, or taxi.

What Is Karachi Known For?

Karachi, the original capital of Pakistan, remains the economic, cultural, and transportation hub of the country. The sprawling metropolis of Karachi is the most advanced and cosmopolitan city in Pakistan with a population of 23 million, which makes it the seventh most populous urban area in the world. Karachi is known for being a multicultural, multilingual, and multi-religious melting pot representative of the whole of Pakistan and the Arab world. Its diversity, modern development, and rapid growth make it one of the more liberal and forward-thinking cities in the region. The city is known for its architecture, transportation connections, financial institutions, underground music scene, and outsized contribution to the country’s GDP.

A Quick Guide to Karachi

  • Empress Market: The busiest shopping area is a famous marketplace called Empress Market, built in 1889 in a Gothic-Mughal style to commemorate Queen Victoria. The market was built to meet all the commercial needs of the British elites who were living there at the time and is built around a large courtyard and houses 280 shops and stalls.
  • Mohatta Palace: A beautiful example of elaborate Mughal-revival architecture, Mohatta Palace looks especially regal when lit up at night. The palace was completed in 1928 as a summer home and last housed residents in 1980. It fell into disrepair and was ultimately opened as a museum dedicated to Pakistani arts in 1999.
  • Pakistan Air Force Museum: At Pakistan Air Force Museum, you’ll find a museum-park with a large collection of aircraft, weapons, radar, and rides in an outdoor setting. On the inside is a museum of photos, retired uniforms, some aircraft — including scale models of WWI and WWII aircraft, and other paraphernalia. It provides a fascinating insight into the history and wartime technology of Pakistan since the country’s founding in 1947. The Pakistan Maritime Museum is just down the road with a complementary display of navy warships and weapons.
  • Port Grand: An old European port on the water, Port Grand is a good place to have a meal, listen to live music, enjoy a walk along the promenade, or take a boat ride on the Arabian Sea to appreciate both the water and the view of the city. There are also many shops, street food stalls, and games in the area. The area only admits single males on Wednesday evenings in an effort to promote safety.
  • Mazar-e-Quaid: Mazar-e-Quaid is a large, white marble modernist structure serving as the final resting place for the revered founder of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah. The building also holds the remains of Jinnah’s sister, two former Prime Ministers, and a couple of other historically notable people. The building sits in the middle of a landscaped park and is one of the more notable landmarks in Pakistan.

Popular Destinations Near Karachi

  • Mohenjo-daro: Far-flung, but thrilling, the ancient settlement of Mohenjo-daro was the home of the Indus Valley Civilization, thought to have been built around 2,600 BC. Though much has been excavated and uncovered, it is estimated that at least 60% of the city remains buried. Today, Mohenjo-daro is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that can be accessed by local plane for day trips from Karachi.
  • Hyderabad: The second largest city in the Sindh Province, Hyderabad is two and a half hours northeast of Karachi by car. Notable sights include the miles-long colorful Shahi Bazaar, Tombs of Talpur Mirs, and Pakka Qila historical fort.

Best Neighborhoods in Karachi

  • Saddar: A delightful mishmash of British colonial, ancient traditional, and gleaming modern architectural styles await in the historical old town of Saddar that is central to modern Karachi life.
  • Clifton and Defence: Clifton is an elite, autonomous neighborhood and military base near the waterfront that includes large shopping malls including Dolmen Mall, Clifton Beach, and landmarks like Teen Talwar Clifton. Pakistan Defence Officers Housing Authority (DHA) — also known as Defence — is a planned development within Clifton that was created by retired military officers to live in an upmarket community reflective of their selfless service. It is divided into blocks 1 through 8, with each block having a central commercial district.
