Where Is Abu Dhabi?

The capital of the United Arab Emirates occupies both a mainland area and a collection of interconnected islands in the southern Persian Gulf on the Arabian Peninsula. Abu Dhabi International Airport can be found on the mainland and is accessible to downtown in a 40 minute taxi or shuttle ride. Most of the city is located on one island that is best traversed by taxi or bus.

What Is Abu Dhabi Known For?

The city is renowned for its modern skyscrapers, luxury hotels, and opulent shopping centers. Abu Dhabi is similar to Dubai in that they have slightly relaxed Islamic laws, increased foreign property investments, have created tax-free zones, and increased entertainment options in an effort to entice foreign visitors and investors. Though Arabic is the official language, most locals speak English and all street signs are written in both Arabic and English. The city offers a mix of old and new at every turn, including both modern and classic architecture, shopping amenities, and arts and culture.

A Quick Guide to Abu Dhabi

  • Yas Island / Ferrari World Abu Dhabi: Yas Island is connected to downtown by a series of causeways. The island features many places of entertainment including Warner Brothers World, Yas Island Water World, a major mall, a Formula 1 circuit track and, most famously, Ferrari World. Ferrari World is a branded indoor theme park with the world’s fastest roller coaster, zero-gravity fall, and Formula Rossa — meant to simulate an F1 acceleration experience. Italian restaurants, live shows, and Ferraris on display make for a complete day of high-octane adventure.
  • Louvre Abu Dhabi: Louvre Abu Dhabi is a world-class collection of art exhibits, separated into 12 galleries organized by theme or time-frame rather than origin. Both ancient and new pieces share the same space. Four accessory buildings used for rotating exhibitions are grouped around a plaza, and you can also enjoy a break at the cafe located on-site.
  • Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: Classified as one of the biggest mosques in the world, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is also one of the few mosques in the area that are open to the public, except on Fridays. Free tours are available throughout the day and the space fits a total of 41,000 worshippers. The exterior of the mosque is made up of sparkling white marble with golden accents, featuring 82 domes and 1,000 pillars. The interior features seven multi-ton chandeliers and the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet. At night, the site lights up transforming into an otherworldly and majestic sacred space. As a Muslim religious site, guests must wear loose-fitting long pants or floor-length dresses, and long sleeves. Additionally women must cover their heads with a scarf.
  • Emirates Palace: This cultural hub and tourist attraction is the most expensively built hotel in the world. The entire property of Emirates Palace is sprawling, including a long stretch of private beach. Its interior features 392 guest rooms, 1,002 chandeliers, and 5 restaurants. High tea is a popular occasion for visitors, where you’ll find a signature cappuccino sprinkled with 23-karat gold flakes on the menu for those who want to indulge in opulence.

Popular Destinations Near Abu Dhabi

  • Dubai: The world-famous luxury playground of Dubai is about 90 minutes north of Abu Dhabi by taxi or bus. It is one of the top destinations globally, known as a financial and transport hub, and one of the most progressive cities in the Arab world. Dubai is a long and narrow tract of city, with water on one side and desert on the other. Desert safaris, supercharged nightlife, and endless shopping are high priorities for many visitors. Shopping is so important here, that the city even hosts a shopping festival. Above all prized possessions — textiles, electronics, and gold are the main draws of this locale.
  • Al Ain: Known as “The Garden City,” it is a veritable oasis on the Oman border, and just two hours by bus from Abu Dhabi. The park-like site is a forest of date palms, with narrow roads that can be driven or walked. Other delights include Al Ain Fort and a camel market. Al Ain is a city with all the expected amenities, including three shopping malls and many food options.

Best Neighborhoods in Abu Dhabi

  • Corniche Road: The main boulevard of Corniche Road travels the coastline between Zayed Port and Emirates Palace. The road is paralleled by a pedestrian promenade, and the area includes many parks, cafes, restaurants, beaches, and entertainment such as go-karting and playgrounds. A popular place for locals to go on a traditional evening walk, the length of the promenade also makes for a lovely bike ride.
  • Khalidiya: A lively, expat-centric neighborhood close to downtown and The Corniche, Khalidiya is made up of mostly mid-rise and high-rise buildings. With some of the best cafes and people-watching, Khalidiya Mall is the commercial center, and the location of Western supermarkets. The restaurants in the neighborhood serve food that is reflective of its international community including Mexican, Indian, Italian, and even an Irish pub.
  • Saadiyat Island: Saadiyat Island is an elite neighborhood with many five-star resorts, villas, and pristine, white sandy beaches against turquoise waters. It’s rarely ever crowded and often touted as many travelers' favorite beach to visit in the area. There is a small fee to enter, and umbrellas and beach loungers are also available for rent.
