The Sand Mix was in the perfect location for us! The house was set up great for our family with teens. You could see the ocean from almost every window! Loved the top deck for the views as well!

Great location to see horses. Unfortunately no AC in game room and AC locked out below 70 (68 would have been nice) Bedroom was up to 74-75 at night and humidity around 70%, which was not comfortable to sleep in and it never got above 82 outside during our stay. Was told unable to go lower, but anyone with Wi-Fi connected thermostat knows it could be adjusted. Fridge did not cool until Wednesday and lower level still not really cold, just chilled. Overall pleased, but I need a comfortable temp to sleep, so not much rest.

My review is a little late....just realized that I never reviewed this house and we're looking to vacation in the OBX again this summer. Would we rent this house again? Absolutely! The layout of the house is perfect for families with children. Master bedroom on upper level and 3 bedrooms on 2nd level and a 1st floor for the kids to hang out! It was heaven for our son! He had his own little retreat. As for the cleanliness of the house, it was definitely in need of a good cleaning, no floors were vacuumed or cleaned. However, this always seems to be an issue with all the houses we have rented in the OBX for the last 15 years! I always have to clean the house upon arrival; perhaps this is a concern the homeowners should take up with the cleaning company. The dryer did not work during our visit and maintenance was trying to get a replacement ASAP however, we said it was not an issue. I enjoyed not having to do laundry for the week. The kitchen was fully stocked with everything we needed and the owners gifted us with a bottle of wine and a complimentary bag of goodies. The views are amazing and we saw horses everyday! My only complaint would be that the thermostat upstairs was permanently set at 72 degrees and it got very hot up the second floor, where the kitchen, main living and master are located. The temp would rise to 78 when cooking and that was way too hot for us. It would take hours to finally cool down. I would suggest a change in the thermostat setting, at a much lower temp. Even with that complaint, we would rent it again, for sure! The owners are very nice and responded very quickly with all questions and concerns.

We just stayed at the Sandmix for the first time and plan to go back. The house is setup great for multiple couples or families with children. The kitchen is stocked with just about everything you could need. The views are amazing in all directions and horses walk right by the house.

This year was our third trip back to the "Sand Mix". The property works out great for us-not to far of a drive up the beach, close enough to the water, great views. Other than the horse tours coming by, there's next to no traffic to listen to. You're close enough to listen to the waves all the time, & with all the decks & the crows nest, the views are great. Hopefully we will continue to return to this house for many trips to come!

We spent a few days during the low season at this house and found it to be in excellent shape and very well kept. The widows watch on the roof was a favorite place to spend our time. The kitchen was well stocked with duplicates of most small appliances which is great with a large family. House was clean and neat. Everything worked well.

We really enjoyed this place. Everything we were looking for: 4 wheel drive experience, pet friendly, walk to the beach, nice updated comfortable house with great amenities. Perfect for our 2 families. Loved the hot tub, the horses, the sunsets, and of course the beach! Thank you Charlotte and Tom

Our family just returned from a terrific two week stay at Sand Mix -it was nice to be able to find a home that could not be confused with a hotel in size, it easily met all of our needs and expectations - all the rooms were well equipped, beds extremely comfortable ( must have been - with few exceptions, there was rarely breakfast served...) - kitchen had everything we have at home and more, multiple decks to watch the ocean, sound, horses daily, saw numerous shooting stars and meteors at night - plenty of privacy - easy access to the beach and really only three miles up the beach from Carolla so getting into town is not a big deal but we were always happy to get back. Fun watching the people come by on the hourse tours knowing that we were there all day, toasting them as they went by in the afternoon from the deck. Used the outdoor grill several times, hot tub was enjoyed, plenty of TV's throughout the home but we rarely turned them on. Spectacular views from every window, and there are lots of them. Owners were very responsive, easy to work with - we look forward to coming back very soon.

My family just got back from spending some quality time at this lovely home. This was our second stay at this home and we will be going back again. Why? Because it is a great house, wonderful location and the owners are very nice and helpful. They go out of their way to insure you have everything you need for a great vacation. Views are great from every window in the house ,you won't be disappointed. The horses that stroll by are so beautiful and always a thrill to see them by the ocean as well.

We loved our week at this house! It was spacious and clean and bright. There are tons of windows that let in natural light, and the ceilings are high. There is an awesome view from every window in every direction. The large leather sectional was the perfect place to flop in the evenings and watch movies and tv. The kitchen was large and stocked with just about anything you might need. The bedrooms were all a good size and comfortable. We loved the hot tub. The weather was not totally cooperative the week we were there, and we got a lot of rain a few days of our trip. What can you do? It's hurricane season. We spent lots of time in the hot tub, took naps with the ocean air passing through the windows, watched the wild horses literally walk across our porch and yard every day, drank wine (we brought our own but also enjoyed the bottle Charlotte and Tom provided), cooked good meals and enjoyed spending time as a family. Honestly, the rain didn't stop us from hitting the beach to fish, taking walks and taking our dog to play either. I still managed a great suntan even with the rain and clouds :) Night time was also incredible. There were other houses nearby, but you could hear the ocean and feel the ocean air and all the hustle and bustle we've become used to just wasn't there, and that was noticeable in a very wonderful way. Most importantly, our chocolate lab was able to spend the vacation with us. While the home is pet friendly, I would have never known this when we first walked in. There was no "pet smell" or even "pet cleaning smell" that I usually brace myself for when I go into a pet friendly hotel room. This home is so incredibly peaceful and restful. We didn't want to leave! Tom and Charlotte were easy to work with, and readily available by phone and email. We really appreciated that. If spending a week on the 4x4 beaches of the Outer Banks is what you're looking for, I can't imagine a better home to be in.

First time in the 4x4 section of OBX in Corolla ... had 3 kids ranging from 5 - 14 and dog, so took a little getting used to traffic being on the beach during prime days of wknd. That said, We absolutely Loved the entire area and property!! The pics did not do justice of the serene ocean views off each level deck, especially the 360 view from the very top to look all across the land for miles. House was positioned back a little off main path and was on a hill so also had some privacy for cooking out and playing music, nice layout inside and out, and all enjoyed loved the scenery, quick trips to beach, and the daily visit of local horses. Turned out that some of the most memorable trips were just jumping in the 4X4 and exploring the sandy trails to find horses and explore the dunes directly behind the house! (Where paid tours go by frequently so we enjoyed taking advantage of that for FREE). Owners were great to deal with and worked with us on our dates, prompt on communication and process end to end ... no surprises on costs or fees and returned deposit in timely fashion, overall just incredible experience for all!! Thanks again!

Had a wonderful time at Sand Mix. Beautiful, well kept home that was comfortable and spacious. We saw horses everyday, and even a few fox. Had fun exploring the dunes on the cooler days and enjoying the beach on the warmer ones!

Great house, has everything we needed. Very well kept and clean, good furniture, plenty of dishes and eating utensils. Plus all the appliances you would expect. The location is remote but not too remote; Corolla is a quick drive down the beach and over the 4wd access ramp. Great views from all decks and nice outdoor furniture. The views towards the sound are great for horse watching, they came by to graze on several occasions. The house is up on a small hill so it has a great vantage point compared to other nearby houses. Plus the ocean is a very short walk away. Owners were very helpful and responsive and great to do business with. We had no problems and will definitely be coming back.

Spent a great week with our family, 4 adults and 3 teenagers. We had a great week at Sand Mix, the house was very comfortable and just the right distance up the beach. We saw horses several days, that was very nice. We all enjoyed the hot tub after being out enjoying the beach, kite flying, etc. The boys even took a hank gliding class in Kill Devil Hills. We all enjoyed our stay and we'd highly recommend Sand Mix. Anytime we called the owners before our trip, they were quick to respond and really helped us plan our trip. Some places we contacted prior to choosing Sand Mix said their water wasn't treated & recommended that you bring drinking and cooking water. Sand Mix has great water. The only complaint the boys had was the internet was very slow and kept cutting off. I don't know if that's due to the remote area or not. We had a great time and will be back!

Great house. The total experience of staying in Tom and Charlotte's beach house, the magnificent Outer Banks, and dealing with Charlotte has all been very positive. We plan to return next year, and won't consider staying anywhere else.

We had never been to the 4x4 beaches before... But now we won't be staying anywhere else! This home had everything we (family with kids 8, 11, and 13) needed and more (foosball was fun, hot tub was relaxing, kitchen was well equipped, beds were comfy and expansive decks were awesome). The setting was what really amazed us... Night skies full of stars, wild horses in the yard, waves just right for boogie boarding, uncrowded beaches with whole shells, dolphins, even a lighthouse to marvel at... Wow! Thanks to the owners for sharing this treasure with us. We will definitely be back.

We just returned from Corolla and our stay a Sand Mix. The house is lovely and spacious, the pictures really do not do it justice. The bedrooms are nicely sized and the kitchen very well-equipped. The house is walking distance from the 4x4 beach. We saw the wild horses every day and one afternoon came home to seven of them grazing in the front yard. Wonderful house!

Love this house! This was my family's first trip to the outer banks, and to the 4X4 beach. This should be on the top of every body's bucket list! The house is perfect for small families. I have a 20 month old and a 9 month old and they had plenty of room to play and their own bedrooms. My 20 month old loved looking out the windows and seeing the horses come right up to the house. The view from every room in the house is breathtaking. You can see the ocean as well as the sound. I would highly recommend this home to anyone who is interested in visiting the 4x4 beach at the outer banks. Also, the owners are wonderful and very helpful. We had an amazing time and plan on visiting again.

Our family just came back from a great stay at Sand Mix. This was our first time staying on the 4x4 beach at OBX and we loved the area and this lovely,cozy house. Perfect location with gorgeous views! The top deck was awesome for sunrises. Lots of privacy yet close to main road for all your needs. We saw horses everyday. The owners are very nice and helpful. We would highly recommend the house for a wonderful vacation.

We just returned from two perfectly beautiful weeks on the outer banks. Our time spent at Mixluxurious was just great. This was our second year in a row at this beach house and I would recommend it to anyone. This home really is a warm and cozy beach house. Located just the right distance up the 4 x 4 beach. The views are absolutely great, the beach not crowded and the daily visits by the horses are just wonderful. With this home you have everything you need for the perfect obx vacation. We will be back next year.

This is a great place to stay in the 4x4 area. It is close to the beach and yet not too far from the main road. The description where the house is spot on. It is a beautiful home with everything you need. The views are great from all the decks and the hot tub is fantastic. The owners are wonderful to work with. We saw horses everyday; either in the yard or nearby as we walked around. Our Dog loved it here. We can not wait to return and would highly recommend this home for a vacation.

This house is beautiful and spacious. We recently stayed a week in this house and enjoyed every minute. The house was spotless and well maintained. It also has amazing views. My three children really enjoyed watching the wild horses from the deck. We also enjoyed this house's remote location. This was ideal for the children. I definately recommend this house.
