Kitchen is well charmingly equipped. Bed is comfortable, house main building itself is lovely.
Main building has only 2 rooms (2 & 3 persons), 4 persons would be separated to stay at main building and other addition- detached from main building and no bath/toilets.

Our host was very welcoming, and the traditional house was beautiful. It was so creatively decorated, and well appointed.
I can’t think of anything!

Zeer vriendelijke rustige behulpzame host
Mooi huis, mooie kamer, geweldige keuken

A wonderful, ancient and very maintained house, with a wonderful host. Very relaxing neighbourhood. You feel like at home!
Having to leave the place!

We stayed in the separate guest house which was nice and private.
The location of the accommodation is very secluded and peaceful.
The communal kitchen is well equipped and allowed us to prepare our own meals.
Our host Kenji was very helpful.
It would be great if the separate guest house had its own toilet so we didn’t have to tip toe into the main house at night and try not to wake the other guests.
The driveway is a bit of a challenge to navigate, even in a small car …

This was the highlight of our trip in Shikoku. The location in the deep countryside is beautiful and easily accessible from Nakamura station.
The host Kenji-San was wonderful and went the extra mile to ensure a perfect stay and helped us move around and optimize our schedule. Very friendly and smooth hospitality.
The property is cozy and renovated while keeping intact the traditional Japanese style. The kitchen is incredibly well equipped with a quality selection of coffees, teas and sake and it's possible to chat with other guests as well.
The room was spacious, bright and comfortable and walking around the house corridor with the splendid view is part of the beautiful experience.
I highly recommend to order dinner through Kenji-San as the Katsuo no Tataki (bonito)was the best meal I had during the whole trip. Renting his bikes to cycle next to the shimanto river is also a must! Lots of scenic photo spots!
Thank you for a wonderful stay!

What we liked about this place? Everything! First of all Kenji is an amazing host, very kind, interested and just a super pleasant person to spend your evenings with. We had the room near the bathroom which made it comfortable to get ready in the morning. The place feels very traditional what made our stay even more special. The location - as the name suggests it - is a bit further away from town (20 mins with the car), which makes it perfect to have a hideaway on your trip. We rented some bikes from Kenji to explore the neighborhood and had a delicious dinner in Shimanto afterwards. We wish we could have stayed longer..

Very stylish place and the host is very nice. There is full kitchen if you want to cook. If you want to socialize with other guests, you can also enjoy it.
1. This is traditional japanese house and the wall is thin. Our room is just next to the shared toilet.Every time when people go to toilet, we can hear the flushing sound loudly
2. When there is full-house ,it means you need to share one toilet and bathroom with up to 6ppl.
3. At the night we stayed, there were other guests having fun in the kitchen until 1am and going to the toilet at early morning. So we just had 3 -4 house sleep.

If you have plans to visit the Shimanto region (by car), consider staying with Kenji. The surrounding countryside is amazingly beautiful, quiet, and peaceful. The rooms are charming, immaculately clean, and furnished with an eye for detail. Yes, you will have to share the bathroom, toilet, and kitchen with (a very small number of) other guests, but because you share the house with others, you might find yourself exchanging stories with, say, a family from Hiroshima hunting for snails in the Shikoku mountains over a glass of regional sake : ) Kenji is a lovely host who will do his best to make your stay memorable. It was for us!

The Shimanto Riverside Hideaway was an oasis of tranquility during our hectic trip through Japan. Right in the middle of nature. We stayed in the private ‘cabin’ next to the ryokan which has all the amenities you need (including a fully equipped kitchen and delicious coffee!). Additionally, Kenji is a fantastic host who makes you feel right at home.
Kenji’s Hideaway is the reason why you should visit Shimanto - aside from the fact that the region itself is also stunning.

Simply stunning. Even though it is not a hotel, Kenji will try everything to make sure you are comfortable. He speaks good English so the place is also very accesible for tourists with no Japanese language skills.
But most importantly: It is just an awesome place. You're right in nature, and that nature is breathtaking. The house is a traditional Japanese house that has been slightly modernized for comfort, but still kept all the tremendous woodwork. I can only recommend to spend 2+ nights to take it all in.
Not really a negative, just a heads up:
The place is really remote, so bring food, and come by car or bike. Do NOT, and I cannot stress this enough, come with a huge/wide car, as the roads (and bridge!) leading to the place are narrow.
Also Kenji, the only improvement would be to rearrange the toilet room. It is currently a little lacking on leg space for taller people (180cm and up).

The property is an old traditional house which has been renovated for some units very nicely. The kitchen is fully equipped for cooking.
There is only one toilet and bathroom to share with the other customers. The toilet located by two of the bedrooms is really noisy for everyone and could disturb your sleep. The toilet and the bathroom are very far from the third bedroom. The size of the shared kitchen doesn’t allow the customers to have dinner or breakfast at the same time. Last point is that the owner is really strict about the check in time and no flexibility for customers who stay two nights meaning that during the day until 4pm the property is simply not available (closed).

incredible off the beaten track location. Possibly a nice place if you are renting the whole property.
after travelling across Japan for many years this was the first place we felt very uncomfortable with the facilities and a huge gap between the description and the reality.

Amazing property with the softest touches of art and decor in every corner. It felt new, while also letting the beauty of the traditional home shine through.
There was only one toilet and shower shared amongst all the guests and the host. We arrived and left at slightly different times, so there were only a few times where we had to wait. However, the bathroom and separate toilet were always very clean!

Kenji is a very good host. He lent me his rainjacket and gave great recommendations for the area. The details in the guesthouse and kitchen are really nice. Good equipement in the kitchen. Beds are comfy, especially the soft blankets
If you stay in the guest house you have to go to the main house for the toilet. But we knew that in advance and its just a few steps so dont worry! Its a great place!

Kenji is a really great guy and has impeccable taste! He was so friendly and gave us good tips on the area. He was very relaxed and works super hard to keep the space calm and clean for his guests. The location is also magical with the sounds of nature all around and a short walk to the river. Its a really special place.
If we had to say anythin it was just that there is only one small toilet and bathroom which is a bit of a shame if all the rooms are booked at once so there was often a queue for the facilities. We also stayed in the separate cabin which was beautiful but as I often need the toilet in the night it was quite cold to go out the house and can feel like you are disturbing other guests as the house is wooden. It would be good to have a sink in the cabin!
If you like to be communal it’s nice to share everything but maybe some people will find this hard.
But other than this it’s a beautiful place and it’s nice to meet other guests.

Beautiful attention to detail! There so many aesthetic touches. And Kenji is a very attentive host.
Robes would be nice as it is a shared bathroom.

I had an amazing stay at Shimanto Riverside
Hideaway. The place were gorgeous, had lovely view of nature, and was equipped with comfortable amenities. I was able to connect with nature and embraced the peaceful sounds of the river. The owners there were very hospitable, helping with directions and answering any questions I had. In the morning, it was snowing heavily, the children had a great time playing outdoors in the snow - an amazing experience!
Highly recommended staying.

If you are planning your trip here, I highly highly recommend you to book it!!! For several reasons, you’ll have to drive past a very narrow bridge which is definitely a really cool experience. The host Kenji is a very nice guy; he’s been very helpful and thoughtful and communicating in English is not a problem at all! Most important of all, the property is super clean and you are allow to use the kitchen too! ( My suggestion: Ask Kenji to help you order sashimi in advance. It’s extremely yummy and of a reasonable price.) You can feel that the host really does love this house and he’s doing his best to make sure you enjoy it as well!!
Thank you Kenji!

Kenji is an incredible host the sheer nature surrounding the area is absolutely incredible. I spent my time cycling around the shimanto river and found all sorts of gems, from small time boutique shops to sizable mountain villages.

Amazing guesthouse! Kenji is the most hospitable, fun and friendly host and will do anything to help your stay. The location is a 2 min walk to the Shimanto River and one of the submersible bridges - so picturesque and quiet. You can also rent bikes from Kenji and roam the riverside. Kitchen and other facilities are great too inside this traditional building. Will definitely return back to Shimanto Riverside Hideaway!
