Room is small but its very nice in the middle of nature, you could see millions of stars. Hot water in shower. Hosts were very nice.

No coffee in the room (there are glasses and dishes), no conditioner in the bathroom, only soap and shampoo, everything is very basic.. but that was expected in nature

Very clean, nice breakfast and restaurant, nice location.

Horlog Castle is an excellent base for exploring this part of the Rhodope Mountains. Contrary to some things we had read before arriving, access is very easy and you absolutely do not need a 4x4. A normal car is perfectly sufficient. Parking is possible next to the hotel or across the road, which has very little traffic. The location was probably the biggest advantage for us. Devil’s Throat Cave can even be reached on foot. After breakfast we simply walked there with our children, with only a short section of road without a pavement. This was much more convenient than driving to the relatively small parking area at the cave. The hotel is also very well positioned for many other trips in the Rhodopes, and we found the whole region excellent for exploring with children. Our children loved sleeping upstairs in what felt to them like a small castle. The room had air conditioning, although we never needed it because the evenings were pleasantly cool. A particularly useful feature was the well-fitted insect screen, which allowed us to leave the window open and enjoy the fresh mountain air. There is a playground directly across the road, which our children really enjoyed. Next to it is also an educational experience path featuring animals of the Rhodopes. Breakfast was relatively simple but completely sufficient. There was usually some kind of egg dish, mekitsa, yoghurt, honey and other basic options, and anything that ran out was refilled when we asked. We were twice among the last guests at breakfast and even after the official finishing time staff still asked whether we needed anything else. The restaurant in the evening was genuinely very good. Everything we tried was tasty and reasonably priced. The fresh porcini mushrooms were particularly excellent, but we also enjoyed the pasta, meatballs and other dishes. On one evening we returned only after the restaurant had officially closed, but the staff still made sure that we could get something warm to eat.

Unfortunately, the room itself was not particularly clean, which was the main weakness of our stay. There were two bathrooms, one downstairs and a smaller one upstairs. Having two bathrooms is useful for a family, but the upstairs bathroom was not pleasant to use because it had a strong smell and could not be ventilated properly. The room also had several lamps, but approximately half of them either had no bulb or did not work. After asking at reception, we were given another bulb, which improved the situation, but the room still remained rather dark. We also experienced quite a lot of cigarette smoke coming into the room. During our first night, a heavy smoker was staying directly below us and repeatedly went onto the balcony to smoke, even during the night. Because his balcony was very close to our bedroom window, the smoke came directly into our room. This is obviously not directly the hotel’s fault, and we appreciated having an insect screen so that we could normally sleep with the window open. However, there seemed to be quite a few smokers around the property, so cigarette smoke was unfortunately a recurring disturbance. Overall, the room and especially the upstairs bathroom would benefit from more thorough cleaning and some basic maintenance.

Well located to visit the cave nearby and for walks in the forest.

The accommodation is tired and could do with some remodeling.Staff is tired as well.
