Staying at Koiya was like stepping back into time - expect tatami floors, wooden shutters, low wooden benches and a beautiful garden. The shared amenities were basic but comfortable. The kitchen had everything for you to prepare a meal but surrounded by so many great food spots meant this wasn’t necessary. The staff were helpful, bike hire was easy, and other tenants kept to themselves. The rooms facing the gardens have a lovely vista.
The proximity of the bathrooms and showers to the kitchen isn’t appealing but manageable

The property was amazing, I like the atmosphere in the house. The traditional backyard is phenomenal, and staff is friendly. Got to meet new friends living in the same house, will come back for 2nd visit when I get a chance

If you’re looking for a peaceful stay in Kyoto, this is it. Tucked away in a quiet neighborhood, it felt like home from the moment I arrived.
I booked the single room, and it was even nicer than I expected, with a window that lets the beautiful morning light pour into the room. The garden is absolutely beautiful and so tranquil. It’s the perfect place to journal, read, or simply sit and unwind.
They also had great local recommendations; like a retro cafe Hisui and a book cafe called Kotoba no Haoto, and both were wonderful spots that I probably wouldn’t have found on my own.
There was always a staff member on-site during working hours, and she was incredibly friendly and welcoming.
I would definitely stay here again the next time I visit Kyoto, and hopefully for even longer!

"Das Haus ist ein Traum. Man wohnt, wie Japaner vor dreihundert Jahren: Tatami, Futon, Shōji, Fusuma, Genkan usw. Das alte Holz knarzt. Die Tatami duften. Gäste treffen sich im Wohnzimmer oder in der K..."
