Makao Beach Hotel

My partner & I just recently enjoyed 3 nights (wish it could have been more) at this lovely little hotel directly on the Caribbean Sea in the delightfully funky village of Palomino. We also went tubing down the river coming off the mountains, which the hotel arranged for us. The room was nice and very comfortable. Being served a fresh & delicious breakfast waterfront each morning was truly remarkable and relaxing. Makao Beach Hotel is a little off the main drag (Carrera 6) but I think that's what makes it special. Good staff. Many kudos to Hilary whose professionalism and friendliness made our stay exceptional.

Like so many places these days, there is beach erosion.

Very friendly staff, view of the sea, nice style. Many fans because kind of open-air room.

Beach here is not so nice. A short drive to the beach is ok unless you have no rental car.

Amenities at the hotel are amazing. Breakfast was good. The staff at the hotel are friendly. There are literally no beaches, and most hotels in the area do not have beach access. The hotel has a nice sand area with seats to enjoy the view.

Staff were fantastic, really helpful (for example, when our balcony door had blown off when we were out for dinner - and we returned to an almighty mess), they helped change our room and in general were very responsive. The food was also great - and the coco loco cocktails. So that would all get 10/10

As others have said, the price/quality balance is well off kilter. The first room - where the balcony door flew off - was "tired", cramped, no Aircon, and generally faded. I know that the wind was very strong, but it wasn't incredibly powerful - the door blew off because the work/materials were of poor quality. You don't need to be a carpenter to spot poor, damp wood and materials. They obviously have a huge advantage in location by being by the sea - although the lack of beach must be a headache. But the photos are much better than the reality - the place needs investment, or a change in pricing policy.
