The Oberoi brand is known for highly personal hospitality and consistency of service, so I found this stay at The Oberoi, New Delhi quite mixed.
There are definitely positives. The property is very well kept considering its age, the rooms are spacious and thoughtfully designed, and I liked the wide windows and overall feel of the room. Also nice snack options in the minibar. It is not the most modern hotel, but in many ways that is part of its charm, and I really liked the overall atmosphere. Check-in was also smooth once inside, and the food and beverage quality was generally strong. Breakfast had very good offerings, and the pastries and croissants were among the best I have had at any Oberoi property.
To be clear, this is still one of the better options in Delhi, and possibly still one of the best when considering the overall product, location, rooms, and F&B quality. But it does not feel like a “holiday resort” style 9.5/10 experience. It feels more like a very good business hotel, probably deserving somewhere in the 9-9.3 range, but with service gaps that need attention.
I think there are areas where the hotel could learn from The Leela Palace New Delhi, and vice versa. The good news is that most of the issues are fixable. Oberoi as a brand clearly has the standards, training culture, and resources to improve these details. I hope management reads this constructively, because I would still consider giving the hotel another chance on my next visit to New Delhi.
However, the main issue was inconsistency, especially in service, which is not what I would expect from one of Oberoi’s flagship city hotels. On arrival, the security interaction felt rude and unwelcoming. At other times, staff at the entrance were warm and helpful, but the experience varied too much, sometimes even with what seemed like the same staff. The hotel entrance also often felt chaotic, with cars constantly coming in and out. Despite the number of staff present, the team did not always seem able to keep up, and on most occasions no one came to open or assist with the car door.
Service inside the hotel was also uneven. In the hallways, staff often did not acknowledge guests, and sometimes did not respond to greetings. Breakfast was another example. It had been highly recommended to me, and while the food quality was very good, the service was extremely inconsistent. On the first morning, it took five separate requests to get coffee. When the restaurant became busy, the staff seemed to become inefficient. You can tell they are trained well in terms of movement, presentation, and placing items properly, but the actual service delivery was not consistent.
There were also smaller details that stood out. The cheese at breakfast seemed to sit out too long and became warm and unappealing; a better cheese selection and better presentation would help. There was a constant leaking or drainage noise from the tap area in our room. Towels were always dusty. At the rooftop bar, cocktails were served without coasters or any accompanying snacks, while other guests seemed to receive them. The cocktails themselves were OK.
The main lobby washrooms were another example of inconsistency. Sometimes they were attended, sometimes not, and it was unclear what the normal standard was meant to be. Also, a basic Kimberly-Clark hand towel dispenser does not feel appropriate for a hotel at this level.

The washroom was poorly cleaned. The WC had blood stain on the outer body. No amount of apology from the hotel can justify the oversight of the poor cleanliness of the room and washroom.
If Oberoi has such poor standards, one must not criticize low cost hotels for unhygienic rooms or facilities. They are doing much better job!!
