Campanile Rennes Centre - Gare

The breakfast was wonderful. It was the main reason I chose this hotel, based on photos and reviews, and it did not disappoint in the least. Something worth pointing out: many of the products proposed are local and some are labeled as organic: jams, butter, yoghurt, cheeses, fruit juices etc. I might come back to this hotel in the future just because of the memory of its breakfast buffet.

Campanile's ecologically-conscious company policy means that there are no single-use items in the bedrooms, like soap bars, vanity sets, etc. Thant's become the norm in many hotels, but, when I asked for a pair of slippers at the front desk, I was disappointed to hear they do not have them at all. I think discouraging the waste of sigle-use items by providing them on demand is fine, but a hotel is expected to keep them for those customers who need them. The same policy also means that the towels and bedding are changed after 4 days unless the customer asks for more frequent changes. I do appreciate this measure, but I think it would be in the hotel own interest to have a bigger notice about it (in my room I only discovered it on a very small sticker on the mirror).

This is a modern hotel, rooms are a good size and well maintained, staff a good. Almost opposite the main station and an easy 10-15 minute walk to the centre of town.

It's a little gem. The hotel is just down the central street visible from the train station's north exit, and an easy walk even if laden down with luggage. Location is great; despite the central location, it's quiet (I heard seagulls more often than people), and the plaza outside is lined with sidewalk restaurants and a souvenir shop on the corner selling Brittany sweets and things. I was shown to an extremely comfortable, spacious, and clean room, with a desk and ample luggage storage space. It even had a balcony, the only one in any room I booked on this trip through France. The staff are friendly, cheerful and polite at all hours, and most are multilingual. They are also knowledgeable about the area, and able to direct me to the post office, laundromat, hair salon, and any sort of restaurant I asked about. There are nice little touches everywhere, like a lobby sitting area with magazines and a rack of information about local events and coolers of water with citrus fruit always available at the front desk. The buffet breakfast in particular is top-notch and packed with delicious regional foods from across Brittany, most with interesting information about them supplied on little cards. It was well worth the 15 euros. I also appreciate the hotel's commitment to ecological awareness, with recycling bins provided for both packaging and food waste. I doubled the length of my planned stay after the first night, and resolved to check out other Campanile chain locations while traveling Brittany. I hope the Rennes one never changes a thing, because for a budget hotel it's virtually perfect. Merci!

The double bed was not a real double, but two single mattresses with one pad and sheets over them - the gap between them could be felt when lying down. Not a huge issue, but makes sleeping in the center of the bed less comfortable vs. sleeping on either side. Housekeeping did not make up my room on the one day I requested it; I asked at the desk when I left in the morning, but found it hadn't been done after returning well into the evening. The helpful front desk clerk offered an apology and fresh towels immediately, however, so I didn't mind too much. Be aware that the door hangers are confusing - one side says do not disturb but the other indicated that you do NOT need housekeeping that day. Make sure there's no hanger on the door when you go out if you want housekeeping to visit.
