Mitsui Garden Hotel Ueno

The room was on the comfortable side of standard for a Japanese hotel of this class; room was slightly larger than usual, but had all the usual fixings. The staff were very accommodating, even shifting me into a new room after complaining that the original smelt of cigarette smoke (the new room also had a much nicer view, which was great). The hotel is in a very decent location, if you are basing in Ueno, although be aware of the walking route to/from the Keisei station if staying here - you'll have to use the above-road walkway and it can be confusing where the elevators are located if you are carrying heavy luggage or mobility-impaired. The checkout extension price was also very reasonable.

The hotel lacks any additional facilities that many others in this price range offer (e.g. public bath, gym, etc.), and as far as I could tell, there are only 3 laundry machines in the entire hotel. The elevators are also constantly busy, with only 2 servicing the entire 13-floor building.

Proximity to Ueno station makes it a perfect base location for tourism around Tokyo. Many subway lines, JR rail lines, Shinkansen and skyliner (For Narita airport). Akihabara a short walk away, Asakusa a couple of subway stops away on Ginza line. Quiet room. Especially considering hotel is beside multi-level busy roads and large station. Will definitely use again

Stairs for emergency use only and only one elevator so going from floor to floor (For ice, laundry etc) can be needlessly time consuming if you are only going one floor.

Staff very efficient and friendly

1. Room photo on Booking.com is misleading. I didn’t realize that one side of the bed is against the wall not shown in the photo. Totally a pet peeve of mine. 2. Breakfast was decent. We sat at the window wall facing the street. The adjacent trellis was dirty and the “garden” outside was unkempt and unsightly.
