Hotel Grand Vígľaš

A magnificent castle on the side of a hill which has been restored : going through the outer moat gate you enter a massive courtyard which has an outside area where you can enjoy a drink. The interior reception area is impressive : grand with soaring ceilings, tastefully done. All the corridor areas leading to and from the various areas in this enormous and complex building are a delight - furnished with hunting trophies, swords, spears and knightly accoutrements : they tell a tale! Our room was massive; all of the room furnishings are furnished with a medieval castle theme but are a little dated as are the bathrooms and could do with a refurbish. However, it’s all very clean and correct, the beds are comfortable, the bathrooms big and have plenty of hot water. Sadly the only restaurant open was the smaller one, interesting decorations, wild medieval wall paintings but a good staff and decent food. The Spa in the once dungeons provided a very good massage. The reception staff were excellent and went way and beyond to answer queries and make our stay so enjoyable

You need to specify a room overlooking the inner courtyard if you want a quiet night. Traffic noises from both the road and rail can be loud - we changed rooms and eventually had a very quiet night. Not all rooms are airconditioned so do check.

Great to be able to stay in a castle which has been renovated to a high standard. Very friendly staff.

The A La Carte restaurant was incredibly noisy which didn’t make it easy to have a lovely dinner for two ropes. We could actually stay int he restaurant.

Eine ganz besondere Unterkunft. Das Hotel wurde aus Ruinen einer alten Burg aufgebaut, wie im Flur auch auf Fotos zu sehen ist. Die Zimmer und Flure sind im Stil einer Ritterburg eingerichtet. Unser Zimmer war sehr geräumig. Das Personal ist sehr freundlich. Besonders hervorheben möchten wir das vorzügliche hauseigene Restaurant! Sogar das Frühstück gab es à la carte (im Frühstückspreis pauschal inbegriffen). Den Wellnessbereich haben wir nicht genutzt und können daher dazu leider nichts sagen.

it’s pretty enough but don’t expect luxury. feels like you’re staying in a medieval times.

staff and cleaning service. 3/4 were non slovaks, when we arrived the receptionist admitted she knew English but preferred not to, so gave all instructions to the one slovak speaker. we’d ask a question in English and shed respond in slovak to the slovak. they don’t do housecleaning during your stay, even if you put the sign up asking for it. the first day we saw they did come in, made the bed like a 5 year old (attached photo) and took out one trash, not the other. we eventually had to go to reception to ask for toilet and empty trash bin during our 4 day stay because house cleaning couldn’t be bothered to refill. we left our room every day at 10am (the check out time), put the sign on to clean, and came back later evening. so there is no logical reason we could see to not clean the rooms.
