An absolutely outstanding experience, thanks to the hospitality of the staff and Mai-san in particular! Mai-san went above and beyond, making sure we have a great experience and even drove us to an incredible, local onsen. The ryokan is located in the middle of Shimanami Kaido cycling route and is a perfect stop for a two-day trip. if we ever do this route again, we will definitely book Sawaki!

The ryokan is starting to show its age, but we didn’t mind as it added to the atmosphere.

Very disappointing quality and level of service for the price (1 night 37 400 JPY or 244 euros - the room was sold for 4 people at this price but we were only 2). For this price we got a tatami room supposely good for 4 people but to be honest if 4 people sleep there you don't have space to walk in the room. Room was very basic quality, it was clean but very old. We could hear the noise from the street. No view at all (some guests mention the nice view, I don't know where they could get nice view from this hotel). For this price no breakfast is included and we were not even offered a coffee. We asked if we could have dinner and breakfast (and pay extra of course), that was not possible. However we saw many other guests having dinner and breakfast. They had to book 1 month in advance. Catering capacity does not seem to be in line with hotel capacity.

The room features traditional tatami and futons, which is very spacious and exquisite. The staff of the hotel is extremely friendly and keen to help. It’s one of the most wonderful trips.

The receptionist immediately offered for me to go to an onsen (onsen with sea water bath!!) when I arrived (after biking) and to drive me there. So lovely and it showed me the nearby beautiful coast ! The meals were also delicious.
