Agriturismo Valdifiore, Sassoferrato, Le Marche. Oct. 22nd & 23rd, 2022
Hans and Massimo run this quiet getaway atop a hill, off a tree lined, winding gravel road.
The Agriturismo is a 4 room B&B, that sits across from the neighboring mountains.
It’s equipped with a restaurant providing gourmet meals, prepared by our hosts.
This restful, two night stop was our vacation, from our vacation. You can visit the cows and goats that
produce the milk for home made butter and yogurt, a short distance from the main buildings.
Breakfast and dinner are served in a separate, cozy structure that reflected the rural charm of the surrounding countryside, equipped with a kitchen, comfortable seating and interesting artwork. Room: nice bed, big armoire, everything was absolutely spotless! Wonderful breakfast and exceptional dinners! So why Sassoferrato? It’s also the nick name of artist, Giovanni Battista Salvi (1609-85) best know as “Sassoferrato”, who my travel buddy is a fan of, if not an expert on the subject, from writing a paper about the artist, while studying at the University of Colorado. In the town of Sassoferrato, the Convent of Santa Chiara has some of the painter’s work where he became famous for his reputation as “Painter of the Madonnas”. The day we visited, most of the museums, etc. were closed. As we climbed a leafy walkway up to the top of the town, we made the acquaintance of a gentleman who asked if we needed directions. We had a lively conversation, leading to an invitation of a tour conducted by volunteers, of the Abbazia di Santa Croce, that evening. The Counts of Atti used the stones from the near by abandoned Roman settlement of Sentium, in the 1100s to build the Abbazia, that in turn acquired a rich history over the centuries. Our tour guides pointed out amazing details throughout the Abbazia, something we won’t forget, especially “Witch Mountain” looming in the distance.

While our room was pretty basic, this made for a pretty nice stay for an affordable price. And they were able to accommodate us for only one night, which is a rare offering for an agriturismo. Well located (although the gravel road was a bit rough for our tiny rental car) and driving distance from beautiful swimming holes in Cagli and the historic town of Urbino.
But our favorite part was probably our breakfast. It was, bar none, the best we had our whole stay in the Le Marche region. Still warm croissants, a selection of granolas and cereal, delicious espresso drinks, fresh fruit, and yogurt made from milk from the farm. We also chose to have dinner at the on-site restaurant which was simple but well done. Nothing mind-blowing, but all the ingredients were fresh and cooked well.
The door of the shower in our room seemed to be slightly broken––it had been outfitted with what looked to be budget hardware that had started to fail, but it wasn't a big deal.

The location is fantastic - overlooking the valley and the mountains on the other side. It is very secluded - takes a steep drive on a dirt road to get there, but is well worth the effort. Also Massimo is a superb cook - the dinner was out of this world, hands down the best we had during our trip to Italy.
It was a very hot day, and the rooms do not have a fan (or an AC), so I was worried initially that it was going to be very hot in the room. However the house is very well built with excellent heat insulation, and at the end of the day it was perfectly comfortable inside.

It was a lovely rustic retreat in the middle of the forest and the hosts were exceptionally kind and lovely to be around. Excellently prepared meals with eggs and milk from their own farm served with panache and warmth! A truly unforgettable relaxing vacation!
Everything was really lovely so this is not a criticism at all but it would be nice if more than one tiny bar of soap was provided in the room and I know it is the country and some insects are to be expected especially because it is harmful to the environment to use insecticide. So we would definitely return and I recommend this place to anyone who wants a relaxing, peaceful country retreat. It is also convenient to visiting other historic towns in Le Marche.

Great food (Massimo is a pro chef!) wonderful breakfast, excellent location for walking / hiking and both hosts really make you feel at home.
We had a wonderful time. A place for those who want to be in the middle of nowhere, but still close to many super trips like grotte di frassasi or sassoferato...

I am writing this in the middle of a worldwide crisis, thinking in the better times to come. We stayed 2 nights one month ago. If you are planing a visit to this region do it yourself two gifts. Gift No.1 Stay here. Gift No. 2: have one of Massimo´s wonderful and creative dinners at least once (we did it twice). Hans will assure that you are pampered through all the courses. The regional wines picked by them are also great. My partner is vegetarian and they managed to please him. Breakfasts is also very good. Definitely, you will need to be traveling by car, it is set up the small hill, with no public transport options. Very close to Sassoferrato and Fabriano. I hope to be lucky enough to come back some day. Grazie ragazzi!
