an outstanding stay in a poverty stricken part of town; I had no doubts related to my safety but it is not one of the best parts of the city; and, will stay in the Union Hotel next time I return

It was second time to stay with Union Hotel. Room is clean enough, and very clean shared bathroom. Located just in front of 16th Street Mission Station. Actually this intersection pass lots of bus lines and nothing difficult with bus in SF without train with smartphone map app. I recommend if you would like to hang out Valencia Street, Castro, and downtown.
You can get Mexican food around here and they are actually best things in Mission district. And speciality coffee place is really closed to this area too, such as Ritual Coffee Roaster.
