MOYSEION Matera - Real-life experience in the distant past

Very interesting stay- with the hotel providing an historic immersive experience, complete with costumes for staff an guests and a performance with replica musical instruments and dance.

The toilet lid is very loud when closing On the day of the stay which it was a weekend, the musicians were off and we didn’t get to see their performance.

Staff attentiveness and willingness to spend time for patrons are most impressive.

The water ritual seems a bit too long, especially the waiting time in the warm cave poor area is a bit inconsiderate. Would suggest perhaps getting people waiting at a more ventilated area before the show.

Stunning, an incredible way to experience the past! We stayed here for 2 nights in August and it was one of the best experiences of our trip. You genuinely feel how people lived here in the past, the views alone are worth it. The view is incredible! I have to highlight the dedication of the staff. When we asked how long they'd been there, they told us they don't see themselves as working for the hotel, they're part of the project. That's exactly what the whole experience feels like: you're not just a guest, you become part of something. In the evening there's a performance in the spa area followed by a light dinner while they play traditional instruments. Definitely ask them how long they've practised and what it takes to make these instruments, one of the musicians spent years crafting just one part of what I'd call an old flute (I'm sure it has a proper name). You have to master a technique that hasn't really changed in over 2,500 years. There are plenty of restaurants nearby, so food is never an issue. I'd highly suggest staying at least 2 nights, don't rush this. Take your time, enjoy the city. It gets hot in the afternoon, so walk in the mornings and evenings and rest through the heat of the day. That still leaves plenty of time to explore both the old and new parts of Matera. The new part of the city has more of a buzz if that's what you're after, and there are so many restaurants around that you'll definitely not be disappointed with the food. Highly recommend this place!
