Forget Gavarnie, Piau Engaly is the place to stay in the Pyrenees. About 1,800m up with fantastic views of the valley & lots of really good walking options. There's also the very good Edelweiss restaurant/bar by the apartment.
Alain was also really helpful with the booking.
