Pozzallo’s history dates back to ancient times; in fact, Byzantine artifacts and Roman coins have been found within its territory. After a period of Saracen rule, the town came under Arab domination. It was the Arabs who transformed it into one of the most important ports in the area. In the 14th century, Pozzallo was well known for its freshwater springs, “Pozzofeto” and “Senia,” so much so that it was marked on portolans and nautical charts as a stop for ships to replenish their water supplies. Pozzallo’s more recent history begins right here with the Chiaramonte family, Counts of Modica, who built a “Caricatore” here—a complex of warehouses with piers and slipways along the coast—which made Pozzallo the second most important maritime trading hub in Sicily at the time.
