A spacious converted farm building featuring galleried landing and four poster bed. Lovely rural retreat for two with views of tranquil moorland.. Ground Floor:

Kitchen/dining room: Electric Cooker, Microwave, Fridge/Freezer, Washing Machine
Bathroom: Corner Bath, Cubicle Shower, Toilet
First Floor:
Bedroom: Double (4ft 6in) Bed. Biomass central heating, electricity and bed linen included. Initial fuel for open fire included. Enclosed garden with sitting-out area and garden furniture. Private parking for 1 car. No smoking. Please note: There is a natural water supply from a spring.. Four poster bed. Featuring beams taken from shipwrecks on the Cumbrian Coast, this small group of holiday cottages at Birkerthwaite, a former 17th century Lakeland farmstead, lie at the end of an unmade track and are surrounded by tranquil moorland scenery and farmland. This is fantastic walking countryside and the elevated position gives views of Scafell and the Eskdale Valley, creating a unique atmosphere of tranquillity. Birkerthwaite Farmhouse (W43001) is a unique holiday property dating back to 1627 and has many original features, beamed ceilings, flagged floors and unusual oak wall cupboards built in the 1700’s. Comfortably furnished and with the benefit of an open fire and an Aga, the farmhouse is cosy and welcoming. Birkerthwaite Stable (W41477) is a single-storey converted stable with rustic charm heated by a log-burning stove. Birkerthwaite Barn (W41478) has a spacious kitchen/dining room, a galleried landing and a four poster bed. Birkerthwaite Cottage (W41479) has an upstairs open plan living area with wooden floors which opens onto a balcony overlooking gardens. Nearby attractions include Muncaster Castle and Hardknott Roman Fort, whilst the Langdale Pikes and Ambleside on the northern shores of Lake Windermere can be reached via a stunning drive over the Hard Knott and Wrynose Passes. A short drive away is Wast Water; to the west are sandy beaches. Alternatively take the steam train from Ravenglass. Shop 3 miles, pub 2½ miles.
The water is from a spring, well or borehole, and not a mains supply.
Towels are not included.

We absolutely loved not only the remoteness of this beautiful cottage but also it’s quirkiness.
Only 2 downsides which would definitely not put us off returning but worth noting :-Towels aren’t supplied as standard so bring your own and also we felt for the remoteness of the cottage, the size of the fridge/freezer was a little inadequate. We fortunately had a large cool box with us to keep drinks cold as we had brought a large amount of supplies for the week which filled the fridge.
Bed was comfortable and liked the bath and shower, plenty of hot water.

The barn is much larger than the photos would have you think.
It is isolated along tricky roads. I would advice arriving in daylight.
But what you get is stunning scenery all round. In the most amazing building.
I should really give it a poor rating to put you off. Because once you've been here you will want to return and there are only 52 weeks a year.

If you want secluded, rural, with one of the best views in the Lake District, just for the 2 of you, then this is perfect!

The barn was much bigger than we'd expected with a lovely secure garden for the dog. The weather was a bit changeable but the barn was warm (even without lighting the fire in the lounge). It was slightly disconcerting when the biomass boiler came on at odd times of the day when it was supposed to come on at midday. It's very noisy! That was our only slight grumble. The cottage is in a fantastically remote location and is perfect for a relaxing holiday. The scenery is lovely and the walks nearby are wonderful. The nearest shop is about a 15 minute drive away and there are several pubs for food within a drive of 20 minutes or so. We enjoyed the food at the Bower House. We would definitely recommend and will hopefully go back.
