Hotel Riomar

Nice breakfast and room, a cozy place to stay.

Very noisy. Street next to the hotel is super loud, a lot of music and people. You can hear everything inside the room. Also the noise from corridors is easily heard from the room. Doors don't close very nicely, so we woke up to a loud bang during a couple of nights.

Location right inside the walled portion of the city near tourist areas with lots of shops and restaurants and historical sights. Also near enough to walk to the hike out to Ponta da Piedade, which we did and enjoyed. Room was well lit at night and the bed mattress seemed quite new and good quality. The air conditioner worked well. The included breakfast was surprisingly good in a spacious buffet room.

Despite being on floor 2 (3rd floor in American) and being there in a shoulder season, the noise from partiers walking by was very loud and went into the early hours of the morning, making it tough to sleep at a reasonable hour. The balcony sliding glass doors are thin with poor seals so outside noise was not muffled at all. There were a variety of maintenance issues - the sliding glass doors on the balcony did not latch or lock at all and the glass was cracked. We had to close the rolling shutters to feel secure in the room. The toilet seat was not secured to the toilet at all on one side and slid around. The in-room safe said that the front desk needed to be consulted for use for some reason. None of these items were show stoppers for us, but they were disappointing. In terms of priorities for us, better room sound proofing from the street noise would make the most difference in the enjoyability of the room. Also, note there is very limited parking, just 5 or 6 spots directly in front of the hotel. No other parking available anywhere near by and the nearest big parking lots are outside the walled part of the city, so that's something to plan for. This actually affected some of our planning as we did not want to lose our parking spot in front of the hotel while we were there.
