Ubrique and its artisanal history: a legacy of master shoemakers and leather goods artisans
Ubrique, nestled in the Sierra de Cádiz, is world-renowned for its tradition of leather goods craftsmanship. For centuries, the guild of shoemakers and petaqueros (artisans specializing in the crafting of pouches and other leather goods) has been the cornerstone of its economic and cultural development. Leather crafted in Ubrique is synonymous with quality and excellence, a legacy that has transcended borders, establishing the town as a benchmark in the production of luxury goods.
In past centuries, artisanal activity was closely linked to the tanneries—facilities dedicated to leather tanning. These tanneries, strategically located near the river that runs through the town, played a fundamental role in the production process. This artisanal system was passed down from generation to generation, establishing a respected guild that, over time, succeeded in combining tradition with innovation.
