From the village of Grafschaft—known for the Grafschaft Monastery—a roughly 15-minute drive leads steeply uphill through the forest until the view opens up onto a vast high plateau. Here, at the very top, next to a picturesque little chapel, a herd of bison often grazes in the meadow—a rare sight that can be observed from the cabin. Schanze itself consists of only about 30 houses, but it has a rustic ski lodge open year-round right next to the ski lift, which is also popular with hikers and cyclists. The trailhead for the Rothaarsteig is just around the corner, and cross-country skiers will find a beautiful high-altitude trail here.

Inside, you’ll find everything that makes a true chalet: aged wood, oak plank floors, rustic stone floors, cozy wooden furniture, a crackling fireplace, and plenty of pillows and fur throws. Add to that modern comforts—a fully equipped kitchen, high-quality box-spring beds, cozy down comforters, and a freestanding bathtub. There’s even a sauna with a panoramic view. From the living room, you can enjoy a view stretching for kilometers over forests and meadows—in winter, you can even watch skiers on the slopes from here. The large, adjacent covered terrace with a table and benches is the perfect spot for breakfast with a stunning panoramic view during the warmer months.

There’s plenty of space: Up to 8 people can comfortably live, cook, dine together, and relax here. The three bedrooms feature high-quality box-spring beds, and comfortable hotel-style rollaway beds with spring mattresses are available for two additional guests. After a day in the fresh air, light the wood-burning stove, wind down the day in the warm outdoor sauna, and then snuggle up in the living room—or straight into your cozy bed—with a cup of tea and some beautiful music.
