This was our 2nd stay at Sowaka and our go-to choice for Kyoto. Everything was perfect. We got a room with garden view in the main building. The garden was mesmerizing. The room was comfortable with full amenities. Dinning at La Bombance was an experience every time. I highly recommend the Japanese breakfast, and their tasting dinner menu. The staff spoke excellent English and was very kind to help us with restaurant booking, direction, transportation. A true 5-star experience!

Such a special and memorable hotel. Just book it, you won’t regret it. Definitely a highlight of our trip.
Small cozy and traditional hotel with very attentive staff. Beautiful ryokan style rooms. Top location by Gion - walking distance from everything. Excellent.

Very hospitable English-speaking staff and clean facilities. Amenities are of superb quality. I can be care free finally about having enough shampoo and towels around for the whole stay!
Maybe not enough mood lighting in the room that could help create more atmosphere

The staff went above and beyond to help me find my passport that I lost on the shinkansen. They really saved the day for me! And I am very thankful!
Especially Risa and the young man that helped me in the last day. He couldn't get through to Okayama station by phone and finally ended up chatting with them online and getting the information we needed.

We stayed 4 nights at Sowaka and loved the entire time. The staff are incredible. The hotel was comfortable and charming. The included breakfast was over the top wonderful. We did have dinner there.....expensive but worth the show. Great location......easy to walk to most things and close to train stations for others.
Nothing really.

the staff and food were amazing. great location.
the picture make it appear that the property has outdoor space buys it’s just pact with as many rooms as possible. other than dining area no other space for guests. rooms face each other can see into other rooms. concierge recommended a restaurant that has a chain location in our county. did not feel like a hotel more like an Airbnb stay.

We only stayed one night and I wish we had more time there! The Japanese garden there is incredible but I do want to point out that you need stay at the first floor in order to have access to the garden. The included dinner is the best fine dinning experience I’ve had in recent years. We loved the tea room in our suite and pulled off a quick tea ceremony right before the checkout in the morning. The location is super convenient and is within walking distance to most of the major tourist sites.
Well, we went in the first week of the new year so the cost is a lot higher.

Beautiful old building renovated in a modern way, top location, mood lightning, very responsive stuff
Paper sliding windows not really gonna save you from cold winds and drafts during winter times. It was warm, even hot in the bedroom, but still- beware of drafts.

Gorgeous rooms and so comfortable. Staff were wonderful.
One of us is a couple. Our room didn't really have a king bed, so much as it was two twin beds right next to each other. Separate blankets and all that.

The property itself is beautiful. The old building is beautifully preserved while spaces like the bathroom is very contemporary and modern. It’s also in an amazing location and access is easy. Complimentary champagne at checkin.
No room service. Couldn’t get a cab for us during rush hour.
Recommended a chain restaurant to us for dinner even though they are supposed to be a luxury hotel. Check in and checkout took way too long after a long day of traveling. The champagne was a nice gesture but the whole process was excessive because I just wanted to put my bag down and relax. Couldn’t get a seat at the restaurant even though we were staying there. Paid for a massage but it was horrible and expensive.
Also strange things like, I wanted to call the front desk but I pressed every number and I couldn’t do it so I had to go up front. The restaurant is open but bar was closed due to covid.
Bed is uncomfortable. Wifi was slow.
