Wildschönau—Vacations in the contrasting mountain world of Tyrol
Wildschönau is a vacation region in the Austrian state of Tyrol. It is located in the district of Kufstein, has just under 4,300 residents, and welcomes visitors above the town of Wörgl in the Kitzbühel Alps. Nestled in a natural landscape that can certainly be described as wild and beautiful, it truly lives up to its name. In addition to the main town of Oberau, the villages of Niederau, Auffach, and Thierbach also invite visitors to enjoy a varied and active vacation. Farms, rustic huts, well-maintained hiking trails, and—last but not least—the charming mountain scenery characterize the landscape of the Wildschönau.

Attractions and Sights in the Wildschönau Vacation Region
Singles, couples, and families alike will find plenty to enjoy during a vacation in the Wildschönau, as the region offers an impressive array of recreational, sporting, and cultural activities. One worthwhile destination, for example, is the Kundler Klamm, which serves as a natural link between the high Wildschönau Valley and the Lower Inn Valley and gives visitors a closer look at the Alpine mountain world. When embarking on long hikes, be sure to plan a detour or two—for example, to the Markbachjoch Sculpture Park, the Lehenlahn Show Mine in Thierbach, or the Schönangeralm with its demonstration cheese dairy in Auffach. Of course, the idyllically situated parish churches of Niederau and Oberau are also worth seeing. So, in the Wildschönau region, active pursuits and culture can be wonderfully combined.

Ski Areas in the Wildschönau Region
While an active vacation in the Wildschönau region from spring through fall tends to focus on hiking and biking, winter sports for the whole family are the order of the day during the colder months. There are two ski resorts available, offering a total of about 70 kilometers of slopes of varying difficulty levels. Casual skiers will find the perfect spot at the Schatzberg ski resort in Auffach, while expert slopes at the Markbachjoch in Niederau invite visitors to enjoy thrilling descents. Ski lifts, modern chairlifts, and the Wildschönau Card ensure you’ll have everything you need for a comfortable experience. Well-maintained cross-country trails and scenic winter hiking trails round out the offerings.
