Charming stone cottage in Funchal | Casa Feitor
About this cottage rental
THIS VILLA IS CERTIFIED CLEAN AND SAFE BY THE PORTUGUESE TOURIST OFFICE All operational procedures follow the Portuguese Health Authority and World Health Organisation guidelines Casa do Feitor (the Factor's House) is one of three charmingly restored air conditioned gems that sit within the 4-acre working estate of Quinta Vista Alegre where bananas and vines are grown and century-old tropical gardens are tended. Astonishingly, this oasis of tranquillity is found in the main tourist zone of Funchal, near the sea and Belmond Reid's Palace Hotel. Converted from the old Billiard House, Stables and Factor's accommodation the cottage walls are of original stone and interiors are spacious, characterful and well designed with top quality furnishings and equipment. The large swimming pool is shared with the owner and their family (for a few days of the year this may include family children). Casa do Feitor (Factor's House) has comfortable 1st floor accommodation with a large balcony, suitable for 2 guests. Accessed by an old stone staircase, the front door opens into a living room with sofa, 2 armchairs, a coffee table locally crafted from chestnut beams used in the Quinta, a desk, side tables, a TV with over 600 cable channels, including German satellite channels , broadband access and table lamps. Beyond, the kitchen/diner has table/seating for 4, an electric hob, oven, dishwasher, microwave, fridge, toaster and kettle and plenty of crockery/serving/cooking/storage equipment. Sliding glass doors lead to the deck-floored balcony with wicker table & 2 chairs. The bedroom (with king double bed) has a mahogany chest of drawers with mirror above and a full length mirror. The bathroom has bath with shower, basin, bidet, loo, heated towel rail and a fitted double hanging cupboard (with small safe). Linen, bath & pool towels and weekly cleaning are provided. There is a shared separate laundry room with washing machine, dryer, iron and ironing board available for guests' use. These villas in Funchal are adult only and do not accept children. The swimming pool may be used between 09:00 and 17:00. Free Wi-Fi and a Bluetooth speaker are available for guests' use. Although the bedroom and living area are air conditioned, an electric fan is provided in summer and a portable electric heater provided in winter months. The 4 acre estate of Quinta Vista Alegre has been in the Zino family for 70 years, the owners being the third generation. The main house (currently occupied by the owners) was built around 1867. It is a working Quinta growing vines and bananas. Much of the garden was laid out by an English family, the Stanfords, between 1902 and 1912 and Charles Thomas-Stanford wrote "Leaves from a Madeira Garden" about his garden and the island. Opposite the entrance to Quinta Vista Alegre (where the cottages are) is the entrance to Quinta Magnolia, previously an British Country Club which is now Government owned. Here you can enjoy beautiful gardens, a fitness circuit, and two tennis courts, all set in an area of about 40.000 square meters. Just down the street you have the two most prestigious hotels on the island, Belmond Reid's Palace, and the Savoy Palace. There are no other villas in Madeira that offer this mix of tranquil character and traditon with a central sought after location. Nearby are other excellent hotels and a good variety of restaurants, cafés, bars, and small supermarkets. You can enjoy sea swimming at the public Lido about 1 km by foot, or you may just want to walk along the coast in this area. Funchal town centre is only a 20 minute leisurely stroll away (less than 2 kilometres). Buses/taxis are close and frequent. A car is not essential but advisable to explore this beautiful island. Booking notes ARRIVALS MAY BE ON ANY DAY OF THE WEEK, EXEPT SUNDAYS. The cottages are adult only and children under 18 are not permitted. Maximum occupancy in each cottage is 2 people. This property is registered and has an Alojamento Local lodging license nº65912/AL. Pets - not allowed Smoking - not allowed PLEASE TELEPHONE MRS. ELIZABETH ZINO ON 00351 963 209 483 AS YOU ARE ABOUT TO LEAVE THE AIRPORT Please print these driving instructions and have them with you when you arrive in Madeira. If you have a car and are driving to your cottage, please follow these instructions. Using GPS will take you via old and less easy roads and unusual locations: From the airport, take the motorway in direction of Funchal. Leave at junction 9, signed to “Funchal, Hospital, and Porto” which you should reach in about 15-20 minutes. This can be tricky as you must be in the fast lane on the left and you bear left onto the slip road, which then curves sharply round to the right to join the other motorway merging from the right. Continue down the hill to a big roundabout. Take the second turning off the roundabout, (i.e. straight on) leaving the Hospital on your right. (“Funchal and Av. do Mar”). Carry on down a long hill to fourth set of traffic lights and turn right to “Lido”, over a wide bridge. Immediately after the bridge, bear right up the hill, leaving a statue of a man flying through the air with a dove in his hand on your left, into Rua Dr Pita with Enotel (Quinta do Sol) on your right. We are the “Quinta” on your left with three gates, 5, 7, and 9 at the top, behind a pink cement wall but the one way system obliges you to go up the hill to the roundabout to come down again and turn in to our dark green metal gate, number 9. As you come off the roundabout the green gate is IMMEDIATELY ON YOUR RIGHT. (Look across as you come up to the roundabout). Someone will be waiting for you there but if not, please ring Buffy’s mobile (00351963209483) or whoever you have been asked to contact. The gate is rather narrow and it helps if you can keep to the upper side on entering. Drive straight in to the parking lot on your left. One of three self catering properties located in a private banana plantation.Very peaceful at night and yet only a few hundred yards from Reids Palace. The property is very well equipped with separate lounge , bedroom (very comfortable bed) , bathroom and kitchen / diner. The kitchen has a balcony overlooking the banana trees and there are views to the bay from the bedroom and lounge.
You also have shared use of a very nice swimming pool which I would imagine to be a huge bonus in the summer months. The hosts, Buffy and Frank are very friendly and accommodating and we wouldn't hesitate to return.

Why Bananas and Blackbirds? Taxi driver didn’t know the Cottages, but knew the ‘bananas’ and during our weeks stay we were constantly serenaded by Blackbirds!
A spacious superbly equipped cottage with everything you could wish for. Spotlessly clean and comfortable; safe and secure. Views to the harbour (our cottage was on upper floor) and set in gardens and a banana plantation with a lovely large swimming pool. All this yet very central close to Reid’s and the Cliff Bay hotels. Beautiful gardens of the Magnolia recreational park are opposite with extensive walks, a fine restaurant and snack bar. Convenient for several bus routes into the town centre or west to Câmara des Lobos fishing village. The Red and Yellow hop on/off tourist buses stop near by which are worth considering for ‘orientation’ in Funchal but most attractions can be reached by regular buses with day passes available for 1, 3 or 5 days. Bus 81 to Nuns Valley not to be missed! By car the estate is easily accessible to all main routes. By the way a tour around Madeira by car is nowadays spent mostly underground!!!! We enjoyed a wonderful stay and are planning our next trip!

Casa do Feitor was our home away from home for two weeks while recently vacationing on Madeira. It always felt great to come back to after busy days spent exploring. It was so convenient to have the option to cook in or eat out. Everything needed to prepared a meal was available - even a charcoal grill. We are grateful to Buffy & Frank for going above and beyond to make our stay as comfortable as possible. My husband and I highly recommend this vacation property - let it it be YOUR home away from home!

Spacious and well equipped apartment in beautiful surroundings
Casa do Feitor is a spacious flat with views across Funchal, the harbour and out to sea. Frank and Buffy make you welcome and the accommodation is well equipped and presented in very good condition, all clean and tidy.
Nearby are many excellent restaurants and cafes, R do Casa Branca having several. Also its just a short walk to small general stores and 10 minutes to a good supermarket. Into town is an easy 20 to 25 minutes walk.
We really enjoyed a week stay and when leaving or returning to the casa, the stroll down the cobbled path surrounded by banana plants and under a pergola covered in vines is charming.

Wonderful
We're almost reluctant to review this property but that would be selfish of us. Having found it, we don't want to share it.
We can honestly say that we have never stayed anywhere like it. It's like a different world - peace and quiet reign. The cottage was beautifully furnished and had everything you could need - a fully fitted kitchen, balcony, TV , dvd player, books, Wi-Fi. There is even a washing machine and a tumble dryer available. Every home comfort is provided.
Outside is spectacular with vines and banana trees. The large pool is beautiful with loungers and umbrellas. We spent every morning at the pool and sometimes returned for a swim later in the day.
Buffy and Frank made us very welcome, as did the dogs who came to see us most days.
The property is well within walking distance of the centre of Funchal and all amenities including supermarkets and restaurants.
We've fallen in love with Casa do Feitor and hope to have many more holidays there.
We really can't praise this beautiful property highly enough.

This was our first visit to Madeira and we found Casa Do Feitor to be perfect in every way. We felt so at home surrounded by the banana trees. Some days we were reluctant to open the gates and venture into the outside world.
The owners, Buffy and Frank, are special people

Our stay here was part of our 50th Wedding Anniversary celebrations. The accommodation here did not let us down. The comfortable apartment is fully equipped for self catering although there are many places to eat out close by. We had a car and although the entrance is a bit tight after a while presents no problem. Owners Frank and Buffy made us most welcome. We would definitely recommend this property.

Apart from a couple of niggles, which could have been avoided had the owners, who were on holiday, left someone on site to ensure that guests were OK, this is a def recommend from us.
Do not, like us, make the mistake in hiring a car, unless you are a professional driver, or a masochist, or own an Insurance Company. The only access to the cottages is so difficult that we elected to largely stay on site, as the thought of having to return through the entrance spoiled any excursions.

Based on previous reviews these cottages had a lot to live up to!
We stayed for, sadly, only one week in Casa das Vinhas. It certainly lived up to every one of our high expectations. Right from the start, walking up through the vines and bananas to our front door, we felt instantly at home. The surroundings are lovely, private, calming. The cottage itself didn't really feel like a rental property, more like someones little home we had borrowed. A lovely atmosphere. Everything there we could want.
We swam, laid by the pool, drank wine on our patio, generally chilled out.....exactly what we needed and this cottage delivered it in spades !!
The sea, Funchal's shops and restaurants are within easy walking distance. We didn't have a car and didn't miss one.
The owners, Frank and Buffy were away for the first few days of our stay but came to see us once they returned to ensure all was well and were we happy and did we need anything. That was such a kind personal touch which made us feel so welcome. They also came to say goodbye when we left.
Its not often that we say this but we would definately return to Madeira and without doubt we would return to "our" Casa.

The cottages were set in beautiful gardens and we loved listening to the birds singing away while lazing by the pool. The gardens were also very nice with a mixture of grape vine, banana plantations and an abundance of bright, brilliant flowers. So pretty. We enjoyed eating breakfast on the terrace every morning and a post dinner drink in the evening. I suppose it helps that we had glorious weather and not a drop of rain during our stay. I love older properties and both the cottages, the Quinta and its grounds oozed old world charm.
We found the owners to be very pleasant. On hand when you needed to ask them questions but not at all intrusive so very easy to relax. The cottages were cleaned at the end of the first week and all towels and bedding were changed.
The only niggle some might have is that you could hear distant traffic noise. We live in an area where there is no passing traffic so I'm used to total silence at night and am a very light sleeper. Therefore I closed the bedroom windows at night. Not a problem in May but I could imagine the cottages could be quite warm during the summer months. I'm sure most people could however leave the windows open at night and not be disturbed by the traffic noise. Perhaps at some point, air conditioning could be installed in the bedroom, even if you have to pay extra for it locally?
The cottages provided everything we needed for a two week break. The kitchen was small but we only eat snacks and breakfasts in the cottage anyway so suited us fine. Lots of wonderful restaurants within walking distance of the cottages, which was an unexpected bonus.
Excellent value for money and I would return again.

The accomodation is light and spacious.
It is tastefully decorated and well equiped.
The Quinta is well located near the centre of Funchal giving good access to all parts of the island yet provides a haven from the busy surroundings.

stayed here in September 2013. These cottages are a perfect retreat, really peaceful and relaxing we had the lovely large pool to ourselves some of the time. But even when all 3 cottages were occupied there were only 6 of us sharing the pool and there were plenty of sun umbrellas and sun beds. Each cottage also has a patio area or a balcony. The patio areas have a table and 4 chairs and sun umbrellas which made it ideal for eating outside in an idyllic location surrounded by banana trees and vines. All 3 cottages are decorated and furnished to a high standard. Casa Das Vinhas where we stayed was very well equipped, with ample storage.
Frank and Buffy are perfect hosts who helped make our stay very pleasant, we were made to feel very welcome from the start. They were both very helpful answering any questions and dealing with a couple of minor issues we had.
The cottages are close to the centre of Funchal, where there is a good selection of restaurants and bars. Madeira is a beautiful but hilly island, but if you don’t want to walk there are plenty of buses and taxis. The views from the cable car are excellent.

A safe and secure cottage in the heart of the city
We were very fortunate to have found this property as it turned out to be an oasis of tranquility and seclusion in the heart of busy Funchal.
We had two weeks of peace and contentment in this beautiful cottage, that had everything and more that you could possibly want from a holiday retreat.
The swimming pool that is set amidst tropical flowers was bliss as we seemed to have it to our selves for the entire two weeks.
This is a lovely place to return to after days out sight seeing and with a plethora of bars and restaurants nearby to tempt your palate, we found this to be the perfect location in the center of the capital city.
We got round the problem of this property being at the top of a steep slope by catching the local bus and getting off the stop past the cottage and walking down the hill.
The owners of the property Frank and Buffy were perfect hosts as they are always friendly and attentive to your needs, always available but never intrusive

Casa Do Feitor- The Factor's House
What can we say that hasn't already been said before, what a wonderful apartment, facilities and location!
We booked after a recommendation from a friend who stayed in one of the other apartments this July. I think that Casa Do Feitor is the best of the three options, as being upstairs you get the fantastic views with light and airy rooms, not to mention the private covered veranhah. The apartment was spotless and fitted with everything you could really wish for. Everyone is so friendly and helpful.
One of the many helpful guides in the apartment was a comment book written by previous guests with plenty of recommendations on places to eat and visit. We found it very helpful.
We hired a car for a week but it wasn't really necessary, you can walk into Funchal easily, there is so much to see and do. If you are thinking of visiting Madeira then any of these apartments are a must!
Thankyou for a fabulous stay on a very beautiful Island, if we get the chance to come again WE WILL!

Regular visitors to Madeira
We spent our second week in Madeira at the Casa de Feitor. Our first floor accommodation was excellent. The accommodation is set within a working banana and grape producing property and has been tastefully converted from old working buildings. The surroundings are peaceful and it is hard to believe the centre of Funchal is only a short walk away (the hill to the property is not for the faint hearted) The accommodation is smart and comfortable kitchen well equiped with modern cooker, micro and dishwasher. Bed comfortable and everything clean. We almost had the pool and garden to ourselves as the other tennants were out and about most of the week. But had the other two properties been fully occupied there was plenty of room for everyone to be quiet and private. The owners were away during our visit, but one small problem was quickly sorted out by the agents. We have no negative comments and really enjoyed our stay.
Suggestions: We choose self catering accommodation because my husband likes to cook local dishes when on holiday. For us a couple of extra oven proof dishes would have been useful. We were also anxious about hot dishes on the glass table. We were lucky in that the weather was really warm and pleasant but Madeira can be cool and rainy at times so a TV can be handy. Unfortunately I have poor eyesight and found the small screen of the TV almost impossible to watch unless I sat directly in front of it.

A Dream Place to Stay.
Whether you are looking for a relaxing place to stay in perfect surroundings or a base for a more active holiday you could not find anywhere better than these beautifully appointed apartments.
You will be in one of only three converted properties in the private grounds of a lovely old villa with vines and a small banana plantation surrounding you.The spotlessly clean swimming pool can never be crowded and you can relax and enjoy the beautiful garden around you.
Funchal centre is just 15 minutes walk away or take the local bus which runs past the grounds. We particularly enjoyed the dolphin watching cataraman, a mini bus tour (they will pick you up from outside the grounds) and visiting several of the many gardens.
The restaurants we ate at were all very good and of course the fish and fruit market is a great place to visit. Try the Tuna Steaks.
We cannot emphasise enough how lovely the accomodation is and how friendly and helpful we found our hosts, Frank and Buffy. What a marvellous holiday!

Excellent apartment close to shops, etc.
We stayed in the upstairs apartment of this complex which allowed us to have great views over the capital of Funchal and the sea.
We were met by the owner on arrival, who is really nice, and showed us around the complex and property. The facilities were exactly as described and the property was nicely furnished, clean and well equiped. It even had a really good fan oven which we found unusual for properties overseas. We could only find BBC world service to watch on the tv and it might have benefited from an i-pod docking station. Otherwise a fantastic apartment. Being on a small banana plantation made it very unique and added to its charm. The only thing to be aware of if you have a hire car, make sure it is a small one - perhaps no bigger than Class C - as the entrance is VERY narrow and can be a challenge.
Being close to the town centre was a dream and you could walk to the centre of Funchal or the "hotel area" which had lots of shops and numerous restaurants - all within a 15 minute walk. Alternatively you were relatively close to the main roads allowing you to explore the island by car. We really liked the cable car trip from Funchal to Monte where you can see the tobaggons that travel on the road; the caves near St. Vincent; and Port Montiz (where you can see the Atlantic Ocean with all its power); the views looking down onto Nuns Valley; and the dinner and dance show at the Casino (15 minutes walk from the complex).
We would highly recommend it.

HIGH QUALITY, TRUE TRANQUILITY
We have just spent five great weeks staying at Casa do Feitor within Quinta Stanford. Our hosts, Buffy and Frank, have created an outstanding facility in which the most careful attention has been given to ensuring that everything one needs is to hand. The cottage was in pristine condition, light and airy with very good size kitchen/eating area and bathroom. We swam regularly in the excellent outdoor pool which was of a very good depth and dimensions.
Living within the grounds of the working Quinta we were close by the small banana plantation which gave a really "authentic" feel to the setting. The vines were only just beginning to leaf but must be amazing in high summer.
The property was very secure with alarm system and movement activated night lighting. The pathways to the property were well lit.
There is good internet access for a small additional charge.
Although within just 15-20 minutes walk to the centre of Funchal the cottage was an oasis of tranquility.
This cottage must surely be hard to beat. We can think of nothing that might have been improved.

A very special place.
I'm rather reluctant to comment on Casa do Feitor at all; I would prefer to keep it a secret. That being said, this is a very exceptional place to stay. As other reviews have stated, it does have everything one could reasonably wish, provided to a very high standard. The location is also exceptional, somehow combining the tranquility of an almost rural retreat with the convenience of immediate access to the city centre (an easy walk into town often got the juices going for a delicious meal in one of the local resturants). I really can't imagine a better place from which to explore the powerful beauty of Madeira.

A little `gem `
The setting of the cottage is lovely and unusual - its in the middle of a banana plantation in the grounds of a large house , however it is only a 15 min walk to the town centre . The facilities inside the cottage are excellent and the rooms are well planned , spacious with top quality furnishings
The owners are an interesting couple and they made us very welcome with gifts of wine and cake
There is a private pool and free use of a washer and dryer
This is certainly a place with a difference -it is quiet and relaxing and very secure - we certainly enjoyed the peacefull setting and hope to return soon

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Madeira and at Casa de Feitor. The 'Cottage' had everything we needed and more, including dishwasher, hairdryer and even towels for the pool. Everything was finished to a high standard and suited us perfectly as we like to come and go as we please when on holiday, no set times for meals etc. We loved our balcony, ideal for relaxing, reading and scrabble and enjoying a drink. The pool was lovely and sorrounded by wonderful plants. The situation is ideal as within about 20-25 mins walk to the centre of town, harbour etc where there is plenty to see and do and a variety of restaurants etc. We took the cable car to the mountains and visited the tropical gardens which were stunning. We also took a half day mini bus tour to the Nuns Valley which was interesting and had stunning views. We attended the mandolin concert in the English church on Friday evening; a lovely way to spend our last evening in Madeira. We did lots of walking around and only used a taxi to and from the airport. A lovely holiday, great accommodation, very welcoming owners, thanks Buffy! We would definately recommed the accommodation and hope to vist again some time.We still have lots more to see and do in Madeira.

Relaxing and charming
We stayed in the Casa do Feitor in June 2010 and thought it was by far the best holiday acommodation we have ever stayed in. The cottages are beautifully furnished and very well equipped - everything had been thought through and provided, including the use of washing machine and tumble dryer free of charge on site.
The owners are charming and a fascinating couple - find time to talk to them!
Road noise is inevitable this close to town, but it was not really a problem.
All in all, a fabulous and relaxing holiday environment, within walking distance to Funchal and the Lido area.
