About this villa rental

Over the Rainbow an alluring 3-bedroom villa that remains exceptionally peaceful, private and scenic. The home consists of three connected buildings – a great room and two bedrooms on the ground level with a third bedroom on the upper level. The buildings are built in a u shaped design with a tiled garden courtyard and dining area in the middle, bordered by native stone walls. You park below the villa and ascend a stone stairway up to the courtyard, where you enter the great room or any of the 3 a/c bedrooms. The great room features 16′ x 8′ screened glass doors that open to an intimate pool, sundeck and gazebo, all with spectacular views of the south coast of the National Park. Past guests frequently tell us that they’re amazed by the peacefulness and beauty of this divine setting. The two new (2019) equally sized master bedrooms/baths are in a 2-story building with interior stairs. Both of these bedrooms have private west facing decks that capture afternoon sun and memorable sunsets, while the upper bedroom has a second deck with east facing sunrise views. Over the Rainbow is located on the border of the National Park in Reef Bay, in an exceptionally peaceful and unspoiled setting that is as private today as it was in 1991. This villa is blessed with magnificent 260 degree views, including the “Big Sur” like shoreline of the National Park, miles of blue Caribbean Sea, lovely sunrises over Reef Bay and the glow of sunsets behind Fish Bay. Reef Bay Beach is a usually deserted white sand beach that is a 10-15 minute hike from your villa. Reef Bay is St. John’s most “undiscovered” and virgin National Park beach where sea turtles still lay their eggs and romantic beach walks are very private affairs. A one mile hike along the shore brings you to a second beach at the head of Reef Bay while other trails take you on more challenging hikes through the National Park to Lameshur Bay, Bordeaux Mountain or Rams Head. It’s a four mile drive into Cruz Bay, all of which is on what passes on St. John for a paved road, but Reef Bay is well off the beaten path, so few tourists ever explore this beautiful and relatively unknown area of St John. Living And Dining: Large screened glass doors on the east and west sides of the great house open to create a relaxing indoor-outdoor living area with romantic views and constant cooling breezes off Reef Bay. Terra cotta tiled floors, exposed beams and the pastel colors create a soothing interior while a rattan couch, loveseat and chair set insure comfortable seating. A 40" smart flat screen TV, stereo, and wireless internet provide the electronic entertainment. Dine inside at the glass and wicker table and chair set that seats 4, outside on the courtyard table also seating 4, or on the pool deck or under the gazebo also at a table seating four. Kitchen: The kitchen includes a 4-burner stove with oven, refrigerator-freezer, microwave, dishwasher, blender, coffeemaker, telephone and a suitable assortment of cookware and dinnerware. A washer/dryer and a BBQ grill are also included. Bedroom Details: Over the Rainbow has 3 a/c bedrooms and 3 baths. The lower level east facing guest bedroom has a king 4-poster bed and adjoining bath. The new lower master bedroom has 2 twins that open to a large private deck with views of Fish Bay and romantic sunsets. The upper level master bedroom and bath is accessed by interior stairs and has a king bed, adjoining bath, and two decks. One deck looks west to St. Thomas over Fish Bay, and a second deck has, oh so rare, sunrise and sunset (east and west) views.

We had a wonderful week on St John and Over the Rainbow was a fantastic home to stay in. We loved the outdoor space. The views are gorgeous and there was always a breeze. The common room was comfortable for 6 adults. We prepared breakfast, lunch and few dinners with ease. The bedrooms are clean and had AC. As other reviews indicate, it is a further drive than other houses to beaches and town. It was fine for our family and made the trip feel more family oriented. I hope to come back!

Even Better Than Expected
Even Better Than Expected
We spent the first week of August at Over The Rainbow and could not have been happier with the house. We wanted something that had an island feel, had a fantastic view and wasn't just like any other custom built vacation home. If you want stainless appliances, granite counter tops and top of the line furniture, then this place is not for you. That said, this house was perfect for us. The house was actually much nicer in person than in the photos. The layout was perfect for a family of four with two teenagers. The master bedroom/bath is separated from the main house & second bedroom so it's private, but not too far removed. The kids enjoyed having their own private area, too. The outdoor space was beautiful. We spent many happy hours under the gazebo overlooking Reef Bay. The pool was a nice and well maintained. The house is not air conditioned but that was never an issue. There are walls of screens on either side of the main living area so there was always a constant breeze throughout the house. The bugs were not an issue either so we never used the mosquito netting over the beds. We were a little nervous that the photos on the rental site did not show the kitchen but figured if it was that bad we'd just eat dinner out every night. We didn't have to worry. The kitchen is small but very well stocked. Actually stocked much better than some of the larger vacation homes we've rented in the past. We did cook in two nights and used the gas grill. The rest of the time we ate out (Longboard -- very good; High Tide -- too touristy and the food was NOT good; Joe's BBQ - awesome; The Tap Room - great food & beer; Sun Dog Cafe - good). We packed lunch for the beach many days, stopping by Sam and Jack's Deli for sandwiches. Highly recommend! If get a chance, find the pathway down to Reef Bay. There are no roads to it so you need to do a little hike (very easy and only about 5 minutes or so) We waited until the last day to investigate this beach but wish we would have done so sooner. It's so different than all of the other beaches on the island and gorgeous in its own way. Another great vacation in St. John. We would not hesitate to rent Over the Rainbow again on a future trip to the island.

My wife and I have just returned from a great week at Over the Rainbow and since there hasn't been a review written for a while I thought I would post one. First of all, we are not perfectionists and we don't have to always have the hundred million dollar experience. That said, we loved the villa. It is great for a couple or two and some children might even be satisfied here because of the private pool. Money can't buy a more beautiful view, from either side. The pool is not huge but very refreshing and the surrounding deck is great with plenty of nice furniture and sun or shade and it is very private. It was pretty windy most of the week we were there but not a problem. The temps were very nice and only a few showers during the week. The villa is very comfortable and accommodating. We did not do a lot of cooking but it would seem that everything was provided. The villa is not air conditioned so if you are one of those who cannot do without, this is not the place for you. We did not have any trouble sleeping with the fans and breezes. Days were not a problem. We liked the location, about 10-15 minute drive from Cruz Bay, but very quiet and private. Driving on St. John is not for the faint of heart but I had no problem with my little Jeep and even my wife never complained. We drove all over the island. We rented our Jeep at the St. Thomas airport and came over on the car ferry. Our greeter was very nice and led us to the villa from the ferry and gave us the rundown on the villa. We ate at Jake's in the Lumberyard for breakfast (twice), Cruz Bay Landing (great hamburger) and Woody's (ok seafood, loud). We had great service at all and it was interesting to me that none of our waitressed were from the VI. We took the Reef Bay hike offered by the National Park but other than that we toured on our own. The owner has done a great job of furnishing everything you could need and I was impressed with his narrative in the villa book. It made our stay very personal and it is obvious that he is very proud of his villa and enjoys shari. The only thing I could hope for if I ever get to return would be a tv in the bedrooms. It is definitely not a big deal and I certainly didn't come to St. John to watch tv but we have gotten a little used to watching a little tv to fall asleep. Like I said earlier, if you must have something to do every minute, this is not the place for you. But if you want to relax in one of the most beautiful places this is it.

This is my second year at this house. I love it. The view is stunning. It overlooks national park land so very private with no light pollution from either houses or other islands. No AC but u really don't need it with all the breezes. I will be staying here next year too if I can manage it. I do want to put in a plea for other guests to feed my "adopted" feral cat Rainbow. She is a brown tiger-striped cat and was emaciated when she first came crying at my door. You will recognize her because her tongue hangs out of her mouth and she drools a bit. I think she has had some kind of mouth injury. She can eat but looks awkward doing so. I've been fattening her up for two weeks now on canned and dry food. She has a tougher time with dry food but can eat it. Please continue to help her survive and also give money to the animal care center of St. John so they can continue their spay/neuter work. Rainbow, I hope you are still here when I come next year!
