Surrounding Points of Interest Town of Marathon: The town is on the site where the battle of Marathon took place in 490 BC, in which the heavily outnumbered Athenians defeated the Persians. The burial mound of the 192 Athenian dead, also called the 'Soros,' is erected near the battlefield and can be easily visited. The Marathon Run Museum The origin of the long-distance, endurance race, the 'marathon”, comes from the legend of a Greek soldier who ran in full armor from Marathon to Athens, a distance of 42 kilometers, to announce that the Persians had been miraculously defeated in the battle of Marathon. The Museum displays 3,100 exhibits that record the history of the Marathon race from 1896 to today, constituting a unique historic sports collection. Ramnous: The site of Ramnous was an ancient Greek city in Attica, overlooking the Euboean Strait. Its ruins are found northwest of the modern town Aghia Marina near Marathon. Ramnous was strategically significant enough to be fortified and receive an Athenian garrison of ephebes (young men). A fortified acropolis dominates the two small harbors, into which grain was imported for Athens during the Peloponnesian War. The site was known in Antiquity for its sanctuary of Nemesis, the implacable avenging goddess whose sanctuary here was the most important one dedicated to her in ancient Greece. It is located at the end of Schinias Beach. Vravron: The Sanctuary of Artemis at Vravron is one of the earliest and most revered of the sanctuaries of Attica. An important settlement was established at the inner end of the Bay of Vravron during the Neolithic period. It flourished particularly from Middle Helladic to early Mycenaean times (2000-1600 B.C.).

We were a family of 12, three generations with 4 little kids age 2+ to 6+. Stayed for 10 days on August. We fell in love with the location : just few steps from the big, green grassy, shadowed garden to a sandy beach that felt like a private beach. There were never crowds, even on weekend and holiday week and only locals. No touristic hustle at all. The sea was always calm enough for the little ones to enjoy. The house itself had many advantages. There are two excellently equipped kitchens, two spacious living rooms, two spacious bedrooms in the second floor of each part, with nice balconies. Also one bedroom in the first floor of one unit, which is much smaller and has no closet. there is a beach bar we liked, just 3 minutes walk to the right, where we had nice light meals. we would have appreciated some more beach equipment (like beach towels, children water toys, etc.), bring your own. The only disadvantage was that there is no aircondition in the first floor, only in the bedrooms, there are two fans, maybe more is needed. At all, warmly and strongly recommended for a beach vacation.

We stayed in this lovely house for a week in mid September 2019. There were twelve of us, three generations of extended family, including a baby and toddler. We had an extraordinary time--days beginning with sunrise, early-morning swims in sea, at bottom of garden, and progressing gently from there. Wonderful figs from two fig-trees in the garden for breakfast. There was space for everyone and everything, and perfect meeting up points, mainly in the wonderful garden, including a great outdoor barbecue. Luxury of two v well-equipped kitchens, and nice welcome packages in both. Many lovely beaches, tavernas, bakeries etc nearby. And great location for excursions further afield, Evia, Cape Sunion and more. The museum in Marathon is a delight, as is the Egyptian Sanctuary. Grigoris, the owner, was very helpful and welcoming, as was his wife, and was always available to answer questions. Altogether blissful stay--VERY strongly recommended!

This lovely spot right on Skinias Beach is a sanctuary of calm and serenity. As we journeyed through Greece, this was a welcome break from our hectic itinerary. We are an active family and as such our children, young adults now, really enjoyed the direct access to the beach: lounging in the sun (warm enough even in Oct.), long walks, sports (there is a center nearby that was still open for windsurfing and paddle boarding), beautiful sunsets along with barbecuing and fun antics in the large grassy garden. We always used the large terrace for meals, reading, playing table games and just relaxing. This was a perfect time of year to visit, while there were less tourists and the children there are back in school and so there were times where we had the beach all to ourselves. At the far end of the beach are a few tavernas, one of which provided us with tasty local flavors while we enjoyed one of the most lovely sunsets in the bay. It was about an hour drive outside of Athens by local roads, which we enjoyed as we left the city and reentered the countryside. Our home away from home lies in close proximity to many other interesting sites like Marathon Lake, the Tombs of Marathon, the Archaeological Museum of Marathon with the restored Mycenaean Tomb of Arnos, the sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods in Brexiza (Nea Makri), the ancient city of Ramnous (Grammatiko), the starting point of "the Marathon" which takes place every November (so a great base for any participants) and many, many more. We visited as many sites as we could and were very pleasantly surprised. It is a given, of course, that a car is needed here in order to get the full enjoyment of the area, however just some bicycles would suffice if one wished to remain very local or was a seasoned biker. The spaces in the villa were very clean, well kept and comfortable and the amenities were what one would expect of a contemporary, furnished home. We would definitely recommend this spot to friends and family visiting this area. Thank you Grigoris and Anni for an unforgettable stay!

We had an exceptional experience during our stay in Marathonos. Even though there were trying circumstances for our host, he went out of his way to make us comfortable. The house is situated on a quiet spot on Marathonos Beach. We watched the most incredible sunrise with not another person in sight. The nearby town is quaint and far off the well worn tourist path. There is a lovely outdoor cinema, lovely tavernas and markets, all within a few minutes drive. When you are ready to explore other parts of Greece it is a short drive to the Atticus Odos and you are on your way to Athens, Napflio or any other location you wish to visit. My only regret is we couldn't stay longer! Many thanks to Grigoris and Annie!
