High Lonesome Cabin...Elevate Your Soul! Peaceful Seclusion
About this cabin rental
Located in Massies Mill, this charming cabin for $287 per night is a fantastic choice for your next vacation. Hi Folks! BEFORE YOU CONTACT US (and if you get past this paragraph we encourage you to!) we have a 4 adult maximum and a 2 night minimum.....sorry, no exceptions. ***FOUR-WHEEL/ ALL WHEEL DRIVE IS REQUIRED*** Children are very welcome but should be supervised or old enough to be responsible. Click the calendar tab to see if your desired dates are currently available. We require 4 wheel or ALL wheel drive vehicles due to the steepness of the gravel driveway, not because of weather. Rates are posted under the reviews section a little further down on this page, or you can click the rates tab above. If you're still interested, please read on and be sure to read our unsolicited GUESTS REVIEWS....our wonderful guests are so much better than us at describing the experience. (and we're pretty biased, anyways) Thanks! ****PLEASE READ*** : We request that our guests leave the cabin in good rental condition for the next occupants. This means a basic cleaning/ straightening up of the entire cabin, leaving it clean and orderly. This also includes bringing your own linens or washing and folding the ones available at the cabin. We provide a comprehensive list of check-out procedures that are easy to follow. This allows for earlier check-in times and later check-out times adding many extra hours to enjoy yourselves, as well as helping us keep our costs and our renter fees down. So far we're happy to say there have been very few problems and we maintain a 5 star rating on VRBO......in short, WE HAVE GREAT GUESTS (most of whom are repeats) who understand, appreciate and desire a true cabin experience, and treat the cabin as they would their own home. You having a great time at High Lonesome is our number one concern, so it's important to us that you are as aware as possible before you go! High Lonesome Cabin was built in 2008 in the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains. This rustic cabin sits on 20 secluded acres high on a steep finger of the Priest Mountain near the Appalachian Trail in Tyro Va., minutes from Crabtree Falls. When you stay at High Lonesome you have a mountain all to yourself, and you may never feel the need to start the car again until you have to leave. But if you do venture out, wineries, orchards, stables, golf, rivers, antiques, lakes and trails are all within minutes of the long gravel driveway. This is a small cabin (technically all cabins are small by definition) and we don't have swimming pools or hot tubs or jacuzzis or saunas, but you can get all that at a Holiday Inn. What we do have is the Tye river right across the street at the end of our long, gravel driveway, home to some of the east coast's best fly fishing, as well as swimming holes and the AT swing bridge. Sherando lake is a short drive away and offers swimming, fishing and kayaking in a surreal mountain/beach setting.....a must see! The Appalachian Trail is a short walk away, and the Blue Ridge Parkway is very close as well. And if you haven't seen Crabtree Falls, it's a must.....highest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. Our 20 acres are surrounded by National Forest and protected land, so you actually have more like 100 acres of privacy! Outback in a small clearing is a stone fire pit where you can enjoy marshmallows and the starriest skies you've ever seen. There's also a picnic table and a charcoal grill, as well as a shed to keep extra stuff in. In winter, Wintergreen ski resort is about 20 minutes away, offering the best skiing/snowboarding Virginia has to offer....there is also tubing and ice-skating. The main attraction of the High Lonesome is definitely outdoors, but the inside is pretty cool, too. There's a porch with a great view, picnic table, ceiling fan, rustic natural log columns, rocking chairs and outdoor speakers....or just listen to the birds and the Tye river off in the distance. Moving inside, there's a small table for dining or cards, a dartboard, a wood stove/ fireplace, plenty of seating to watch a movie on the plasma TV, gorgeous stonework with cedar and pine walls/floors, a decent sized kitchen with cookware and utensils provided, small bathroom with shower only. In the back is a small but cozy master bedroom with a very comfortable queen-sized bed. Both areas have ceiling fans and there is a wall mounted heat pump unit for AC/heat. Up the spiral staircase is the loft with a queen-size and a double bed...there's a TV with dvd player and a Gamecube and lots of video games. Some modern conveniences are furnished, but this is not a ginormous luxury log home masquerading as a “cabin”. The spectacular view, total privacy and mountain setting are its finest attributes….ones that only Mother Nature could provide. If a serene mountain escape is what you seek, High Lonesome Cabin will elevate your soul and clear your mind. Excellent location, beautiful scenery! Fantastic host who is willing to go the extra way to help you, warm and cozy cabin that makes you feel like you are at home. We can't wait to stay again. Just amazing all around! You will love it and be immersed in nature! Thanks for a wonderful stay!

100% satisfied. Only recommendation would be swap out open from wood stove for closed potbelly style or pellet stove. Wind cause smoke to come in.

This cabin is well represented by the owner and reviews.
The driveway is definitely on the intimidating side with its steep slope and switchbacks, but is easily navigated with the appropriate vehicle and adventurous spirit.
And the peaceful haven at the top is well worth the effort.
High Lonesome is a wonderfully secluded getaway that is impressively clean for a property that is cleaned by its guests. There are movies and games and plenty of firewood for the wood stove. Communication with the owner was easy and prompt. It is clear why this property has so many repeat guests! We hope to be one of them.

We had an awesome weekend here at the High Lonesome Cabin. The cabin was very peaceful and pleasant. With it being tucked up in the mountains was just relaxing. Robb had all the info laid out and was great with communicating with everything. Got to meet his wife when we're leaving out. Mrs. Sally was such a sweetheart. I wished we had more time to meet Robb, since he was playing up the road at a gig. We definitely will be booking again. Thanks so much Robb and Sally!!! Your place is absolutely the PERFECT GETAWAY!!!!

The cabin was as advertised - away from it all. Perfect for our 3-night stay. Highly recommend if you are looking to get off the grid to enjoy the beautiful sights of central VA!

Overall we had a very nice experience, I’m grateful we decided to take our Jeep Wrangler this trip for the 4x4 part of the driveway it didn’t have an issue getting up the hill but the driveway is a 1/4 mile steep road with large rocks in the road and sharp turns it felt unsafe at times you have to really be careful …it was not the driveway we expected we were grateful to bring our dog but the jostling around (even with him safely fastened in) from the road make him throw up in the car so we tried to limit our trips to one trip up and one down daily we brought changes of clothes, food, etc we would need to stay gone until we were in for the night…on a positive note it was very clean, everything that it states it will have available was there..we enjoyed the hummingbirds on the porch in the morning and the quiet was very relaxing at bed time ..we were disappointed in the view or lack of maybe it was the time of year but the trees covered the view we saw nothing from the mountain top but the trees surrounding us no Mountain View I guess I thought I saw one in the pics… the cabin itself was very nice but I don’t think we would stay again due to the inconvenience of getting in and out my husband is from the mountains of WV we are no strangers to country roads but this felt unsafe and made me nervous outside of my comfort zone

The house is beautiful inside and out. There’s a wonderful front porch and a well set up fire pit if you wanna be outdoors or you can relax and listen to the wood stove burn inside while relaxing. The house is completely secluded and perfect for just getting away. It’s also only 20 minutes from Devils backbone and a few wineries which is a plus. We will be staying again.

High Lonesome Cabin is located in a secluded area on Priest Mountain in Virginia, very close to the Appalachian Trail. It's one of the few places we were able to completely relax and enjoy everything this property has to offer. The cabin sports rustic tongue-and-groove plank flooring with rough-sawn cedar walls and ceilings. While the driveway is steep, a four-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive vehicle should easily get you up to the cabin without issue. This is one we'll have to visit again!

Very quiet, peaceful location. Hummingbirds we’re fun to watch as were the butterflies! Cozy cabin. Enjoyed the Tye River right across the driveway. This area is beautiful.

First off, you WILL absolutely NEED 4wd! My boyfriend is the outdoorsy rugged type and while we were driving up the driveway all he kept saying was "What did you (as in me) get us in to?" Lol! But once you make it up the driveway, you are in for a special treat... HLC is tucked away in what seems to be the most peaceful spot ever! It was absolute seclusion and relaxation. Nothing fancy just perfect simplicity. It provided the perfect backdrop for our little getaway together with our fur baby. We look forward to our next visit to HLC!

Wonderful cabin in a great location. The cabin was the perfect size for 3 of us. Robb was very responsive and forwarded us information on things to do in the area. The Crabtree Falls hike is a must-do. We 100% recommend staying at the High Lonesome Cabin!

We absolutely loved this place. My wife and I, and our friends stayed here over the weekend. The accommodations were beyond amazing, everything you needed the cabin had. The cabin is close to trails, breweries galore and wineries. If you just want to relax and take in the sights, this is the place for you. We will be coming back to this cabin again we are in love with the atmosphere it provided to us.

Need 4x4 or AWD to get up the hill to the cabin, so be careful. But once you’re there, this cabin is perfect! If you’re looking for a quiet weekend retreat, this is the place to be. Sit on the front porch, watch the hummingbirds, listen to the creek far below. Great place to get away from it all!

Very relaxing and comfortable.
We loved the wildlife! From the Hummingbirds at the the cabin, Momma Raccoon and her two babies that would visit every night. We saw Hawks close up and even a Coyote. Could hear them howling off in the distance from another mountain. The Stars were simply breathtaking at night. We laid and and star gazed till we couldn’t keep our eyes open anymore.

Nice secluded cabin, has everything you need, a 4 wheel drive vehicle is needed as the steep drive way has loose gravel and sharp turns.

We had a wonderful stay with our pups and enjoyed close, beautiful, hikes, and the ability to return to the camp base for making lunches or dinner. Such a special and magical place! We were honored to be there and happy to have cleaned well afterwards.

This is our second stay at High Lonesome and it will not be our last. The cabin has everything you can possibly need and Robb is amazing to work with.

The cabin is a beautiful spot, peaceful, comfortable and still close enough to things to do to keep kids busy. We loved sitting on the porch with our coffee in the mornings, making music there in the afternoon and sitting by the fire pit in the evening. Will stay again!

We stayed 2 nights and the cabin was clean and had just about everything we needed. I will say, just as the listing tells you, to make sure you have 4 wheel or AWD! We have a Ram 1500 5.7 (RWD) and it took everything our truck had to get up the mountain!!! We had great time hiking up Crab Tree Falls and just spending time in nature. We also had the pleasure of meeting our host and he was very helpful and kind. Just like the guest before us, we made sure we cleaned up after ourselves and our dog. It was a very enjoyable experience and highly recommend!

This is our second time staying at this location and certainly won't be our last. This cabin is perfect for a getaway vacation. The location is great if you're looking to enjoy some of the attractions nearby, Crabtree Falls is one of our favorites. This is also great if you want to check out the local breweries, growlers on the porch are best! Robb made the stay very easy and provided a list of events via email the day of our arrival, this was on top of the already helpful info at the cabin. Overall, this is our favorite place, we've made Roseland/Tyro/Wintergreen area our go-to for many years and HLc perfect.

This quaint enchanted cabin in the woods is a real mountain gem! Small and cozy yet having every amenity one could want, cleverly built into the cabin footprint. Beautiful views from the front porch rocking chairs. Cozy evenings around the outdoor fire pit. Only minutes from the Tye river AT trail heads to priest mountain and the three ridges trails. We did both! Great time, great location! Also… when Robb says you need a 4WD vehicle to make the final drive… he means it! Don’t try it with lightweight vehicles! It’s the price for high, peaceful seclusion. We rented a Bronco which handled it fine.
