Kangaroo Island (or ‘KI’ as the locals call it) is also big and surprisingly diverse. If you traverse its 155km length you’ll find soaring cliffs, dense bush land, towering sand dunes, wetlands and massive arcs of bone white beach. Kangaroo Island is a true wildlife sanctuary. The Island has been spared the damage done by foxes and rabbits, ensuring the integrity of native bushland. Result? Animal and bird populations have thrived. Today, more than one-third of the Island is declared Conservation or National Park and it has five significant Wilderness Protection Areas. So Kangaroo Island continues to be a special and protected place. Wildlife surrounds Kangaroo Island. The ocean is teeming with fish, sea lions and little penguin colonies. Stand on the shore in the cooler months and watch migrating southern right whales and their calves. What to See and Do A visit to Kangaroo Island is not complete without seeing the following places: Seal Bay – approximately 1.5hrs from Penneshaw (bitumen road) Prospect Hill – climb 500 steps to the top for a great view of both sides of the Island Cape Willoughby Lighthouse, 20 minute drive from Penneshaw Cape De Coudie Lighthouse & Borda Lighthouse (both on western side of the island) Flinders Chase Admirals Arch Remarkable Rocks Kelly Hill Caves Raptor Domain Little Sahara Paul’s Place – Parndana for Wildlife tours Honey Farm Eucalyptus farm Sheep Dairy where local cheeses and yogurts are produced Fishing Charters Numerous local wineries. We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay - the house is amazing. It has everything you need and more. Enjoying breakfast on the terrace looking out to the sea with no disturbances (the property is right on the seashore) is unbeatable. Jo is very helpful as well. If we return to KI we will definitely book this place again.
