Left home at 1.30pm with ETA 4pm, just in time for check-in. Received an email at 2.13pm whilst on route stating the hotel could not longer take our booking with no explanation other than “the hotel is closed for public” leaving us frantically searching for new accommodation. Due to this, I wouldn’t be recommending to stay here due to their unpredictability

It was shut.

Booking was cancelled by The Royal before the visit so had to book into another hotel, hence the low rating. I'm sure it would have been good if it wasn't cancelled.

My booking was cancelled months ago due to this hotel been taken over by government as an immigrant staging hotel.
This is the info I got in the cancellation email from the hotel

I cannot comment on this property
I did not like the fact that they cancel our booking on behalf of taking in immigrants in such a historical Central Hotel of high standard

I booked this hotel a few weeks ago for my friend's birthday we had planned to go for a meal then a few drinks.. We arrived at the Royal to be refused.... We should of got a email telling us that this hotel was closed... So we were stuck in hull with nowhere to stay.... We rang around lots of different hotels to be told they were all full due to it being bank holiday... We never had a meal as we were to busy trying to find somewhere else.... So thank you for nothing it spoiled a friends 50th birthday... After the year we have had we was really looking forward to this and was very upset and disappointed

Size of room was good. Plenty of storage. Plenty of seating and mirrors.
Fire alarm at 7.45am woke us all up they don't know why it went off check in was at 2 got keys and cleaners refused saying wasn't ready so couldn't go in room. Receptionist staff lovely though. Bed was abit hard but for money can't really complain my mums bed next door was lovely though. No free WiFi which in 2020 is essential really. Be better with small fridge.

The hotel itself and wonderful gave me a very large comfortable room, it was wonderful the hotel and great to stay down there it was wonderful
I did not like the service at the front desk need to hire educated people who want to work because forced work is not possible is that at the end of the check out I had the misfortune to get the same person Check in is time to give me my points or Voucher with the hotel card she said i had no right to anything and didn't know why, extremely disrespectfull almost command her to go to hell ..

The hotel is a good quality three star hotel and for the price I paid was very good value for money. It is easy to see that the hotel in years gone by was rather grand and luxurious but is now a little tired and dated. The lobby area for example has rather old sofa's and chairs.
The breakfast is self-service and has a great selection of hot and cold food, good value for money.
The rooms were a little on the warm side but saying that, electric fan had been placed in the room.
