The downstairs area of this house is very spacious, with ample car parking. The lawns however could do with a mow and it would have been great to have a key to the side gate for safer access to the bus stop and laneway to Sorrento.

We were eight friends staying in this property which provided lots of room for all. The villa was well equipped with a large kitchen, an outdoor dining space, 4 bedrooms. Having two bathrooms for 8 of us was sometimes a bit challenging but we managed. The view from the back garden is absolutely stunning - you see Mt Vesuvius, Naples, Sorrento and the whole bay area. As others have mentioned, you can walk to Sorrento in 20 minutes (but a bit steep in places) but you need to be fit to walk back up - you can take a local bus. The property manager did a great job of arranging tours for us to the Amalfi coast, Pompeii and Capri. This property is great value for money - the only thing that might have made it nicer was a bit of attention to the garden (not mowed and not updated) but overall a great spot.

I don't really know where to begin.
I was joined at the villa by my three adult children and their partners in mid-Sep for a two week stay. I wish it had been much longer. The villa with its 19th century charm, large space and with most of the important modern amenities gave us everything we needed. What it didn't have we didn't need - such as A/C (always comfy in mid-Sep), clothes dryer (had a clothes line), TV (come on now, you're in Sorrento).
The hilltop setting is extraordinarily beautiful - we could not get enough of the rear terrace and its panoramic views of the Gulf of Naples (day or night), the church bells, the rooster, the occasional woodsmoke. Unforgettable.
Carolina and especially her guest manager, Rita, are marvelous hosts and wonderful to work with. Rita helped arrange car services for our trips to Naples and then Positano, offered other assistance and was always responsive to our queries.
I'll say no more, because if I do I'll grow more wistful about not having spent more time in Sorrento and the villa. But I highly recommend it and we'll be back.

Beautiful historic building with amazing views! Would recommend

Property has wonderful views and large rooms. The problems stem from the unbearably hot temperatures with no air conditioning. This shortcoming could easily have been offset by fans available to circulate the air. Screens on the windows would also help. Furniture is rickety and beds are uncomfortable. As an added bonus to make the stay unpleasant, the place is infested with mice with no apparent attempt at controlling them. It was unanimous in our party of six that we do not recommend it until improvements are made.

The views of this property are everything. Absolutely breathtakingly beautiful! We were unclear that there were limitations on the outdoor space, as the property was being shared with others until arrival. Also, while the views are unmatched, the inside could use some attention, especially the beds (hard and rickety), pillows (flat, not fluffy) & towels (scratchy). Our overall rating would be 5 stars if the beds were replaced with high quality mattresses, pillows and towels in keeping with the quality of this historic home with the most spectacular views.

Can see Villa on hill from all over
Would love to know about the history of this Villa.
We used the bus most frequently up and down , to and from Sorrento. Have to purchase tickets at tobacco shops or bus station.
Nice space with 4 bedrooms/2baths. Would like screens on a few windows to let in fresh air and no critters/bugs.

Our stay in the villa
Our group of seven friends had a wonderful week in the villa at the end of September. The location was excellent with a twenty minute down hill walk into Sorrento and a thirty to forty minute walk back (but a bus stopped very near the villa for anyone who didn’t want to walk). There was a supermarket near the start of the walk back to the villa which we used to buy food to cook at the villa and there were many cafes in Sorrento to sit in to watch the world go by. We also found a wonderful ice cream parlour in one of the Old Town side streets running parallel to the main road Corsa Italia.
We used public transport from Sorrento to get to the beautiful villages of Positano, Amalfi & Ravello and also to Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius. We found the prices of the buses & trains very reasonable. The ferry to Amalfi was more expensive at €16.50 for one way but worth it. The only drawback was that public transport could be very crowded at times.
We felt the villa was very authentic and characterful and a charming, relaxing place to stay with exceptional views overlooking the Bay of Naples. Amazingly it could be seen , perched in the hillside, from many areas down in Sorrento including the port and Corsa Italia.
We can thoroughly recommend the villa to anyone who would like to stay in a charming property, with superb views, out of the hustle & bustle of Sorrento but still with easy access to the town.

Excellent location and accommodation
On a tour of Italy this was a fantastic first stop. We felt very privileged staying in this beautiful old apartment. Overlooking Sorrento the apartment comes with spectacular views and a very welcome cooling breeze. The walk down to Sorrento and back was no problem in sensible shoes. The accommodation suited four adults and three children perfectly. It was spacious and cool. Luca was very helpful and provided us with a lot of useful information. If I had any criticism it was that the cleaning charges are not included with the cost of the apartment and at 18 euros per person it was a substantial further sum to outlay on arrival.

Beautiful villa with views beyond belief! Luca was extremely accommodating and attentive. He arranged for private transportation from Naples to the Villa (highly recommend this) and purchased some groceries for our group to have upon arrival. The location was wonderful but be prepared to walk around 15 minutes downhill into town and a 20-40 minute uphill walk back (depending on how in-shape you are). Our group walked most of the time. Kitchen has all utensils needed to cook meals and a dishwasher. This Accomodation is truly a gem and we hope to stay here again in the future!

An authentic Italian experience
I had organized a group of eight people to spend nine nights in Sorrento. This property fit the bill for our needs, with four bedrooms and two bathrooms and plenty of space. Luca met the first four people who arrived. He gave a very cursory explanation of everything, and the group ended up finding their own way down into town via a shortcut. My group of four arrived after the last bus had left (21:15) and had to pay for a taxi to the villa (36 Euros). In general, after that, we made sure to catch that last bus although we did walk up one night (make sure that you bring flashlights). Between all of us, we had two sets of keys. The kitchen and bathrooms were quite modern although the water heater on my side of the house would only provide hot water for about 1 1/2 showers, at best Also, on my side, it should be noted that the bathroom is off of a bedroom so we had to walk through that bedroom to get to it. It was not a problem for us, however, and the radiator served as a nightlight. We had to make use of the heaters as it was quite chilly. There were plenty of adapters and plugs which were helpful for all of our phones, computers, etc. Although there was an explanation in the manual of what to do if the lights went out (which happened twice), there was not one for the water heater on the other side of the house. Someone reached out to Luca and was told how to fix it. In the morning, those of us on one side of the house were sometimes awakened by the sounds of chairs scraping on the floor above. As other people have mentioned, the views were spectacular. It was also nice to be able to walk through town and to look back and see the villa on the hill. If you're looking for a place for a group who needs lots of space to move around and wants to have an authentic Italian experience, stay here. Although we did not meet Carolina, we did have the pleasure of meeting her mother on the day that we left.

We had a lovely holiday staying at Villa Castellano as an extended family of 4 adults and 3 children. There was plenty of space for us all to be very comfortable and as the nights were still cool extra blankets were provided and heaters in every room. It was possible to have all 3 children sleeping in the same room which was very useful. Staying in a grand villa was a great experience for us all and the views and sunsets were just spectacular! We spent many hours appreciating the villa's location, when sitting on the terrace or in the garden and when walking up and down the cobbled street to the town. The kitchen was very well equipped with everything we needed for preparing simple cooked meals and we found Rita (the host representative) to be very helpful in showing us where to buy food and places to eat around town. The only slight issue would be occasional noise from people living in the floors above, but this is to be expected in an apartment. Overall it was a beautiful place to stay away from the busy streets of Sorrento.

Rustic family villa with the most amazing views of Sorrento
We came to Sorrento with our close family as we were getting married and wanted to share the special occasion with our nearest and dearest, hence we were looking for somewhere that slept 7. We stumbled across this beautiful villa on HomeAway and was superb value for money for the week. Whilst the villa is old and rustic in decor it had a very Italian feel and the most inncredible views of Sorrento. From our initial booking Carolina went above and beyond what we feel was expected of a host. We pre-ordered a welcome package which came in handy as we didn’t arrive in Sorrento until late in the evening and finding food at this time could have been an issue. We also booked transfers to and from the villa through Carolina’s contact as well as a private boat trip to Capri. It was fantastic that we were able to do all of this before getting to Italy as it made the family trip run a lot smoother. We were welcomed to the Villa by Sonia who was very welcoming and helpful with regards to local knowledge and also checking out etc. Carolina was also kind enough to allow us to keep our bags in the villa on the day of check out as we had a late flight which meant we didn’t have to cart our bags around all day. The walk down into Sorrento is roughly 20 minutes downhill and 30-40 uphill but as quite an active family we thoroughly enjoyed this walk daily. Carlo, who lives next door, was also kind enough to give us a lift down one day too. The day before our wedding Carolina’s mother came round with a beautiful gift from the family which was such a nice touch. I would highly recommend Villa Castellano if you are looking for a large space for a family or group of people and don’t mind accepting a walk into town in favour of some beautiful views and scenery. Overall we were really impressed with the amenities as it really was a home away from home and we made us of the kitchen, washing machine, ironing board, CD player etc. Great villa and superb hosts.

Beautiful house and stunning view
We felt as we were part of an old movie. Beautiful house, stunning view. Good walk down to and up from town center. Kept us in good shape throughout the holiday :).

A true beauty with an incredible view!
This property was just perfect for our family to stay in Sorrento. Luca met us at the property and he was just wonderful showing us around. Once we looked around and chose our rooms we met out on the lawn and we all took in the breathtaking view. It is STUNNING! We did walk into town the first day we were there and did walk back up after we were done in town. It was doable but we were exhausted as it is all up hill hahaha. It is a comfort when you are in Sorrento and look up and see your home for the week. We had a car so we found a great parking lot in town and always just took the car. Easy peasy! It was so handy having a washing machine there as we had already been in Italy for a week so being able to do laundry was great. We found the grocery store both in the town above as well as the one right in Sorrento and we had some meals on the patio taking in the sunsets which are just incredible from this home. We took lots and lots of photos of the sunsets - each night was different and more beautiful. Carolina was wonderful to deal with and answered our questions almost immediately. I would not hesitate to recommend this place to stay and who knows we may be back for a second visit. :)

Simply breathtaking villa
Really stunning house and would highly recommend. Luca in particular was extremely helpful and we were very grateful.
I would highly recommend either (a) hiring a car or (b) working out how to make the 30 minute walk down in the daylight hours. The local bus is very good but note that sometimes it is full, so be prepared to walk downhill.
The kitchen is large and beautiful but remember to bring either your own food or arrange a welcome package - there is no nearby shop except in the town.
This was EXACTLY what we were looking for and I cannot recommend this location enough.

Five stars for the view!
What a breathtaking view in a very rustic and stately home. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to a large group.
Taxi was a bit expensive ( 30 euros each way) to keep going back and forth into the town but the walk down was very beautiful.
The bus is a better way to go back and forth and we wish we had figured it out earlier!
We cannot imagine a better view could be had anywhere else! Cannot wait to go back!

Our family of 8 LOVED Villa Castellano.
We found the home to be exactly as described in the listing--a spacious charming villa perfect for a large family or group of friends. The view, as you can tell from the photos is just stunning and we spent every morning just taking it in. The home doesn't have air conditioning but you don't really need it due to the gentle hilltop breezes. We were there in the middle of August and were quite comfortable.
The walk into town takes about 15 minutes along a lovely cobblestone path. Walking back to the villa is another story. It's a pretty steep climb but a great work out if you're fit and healthy. If not, it can be a bit of a slog. We rented a car while there which was really handy for ferrying different groups back up the hill (about a 3 minute drive). Overall there are pluses an minuses for having a car in Sorrento. On the positive side you can drive to other nearby beaches or up the hill to Santa Agata--a small, charming not so touristy village about 10 minutes away. Plus buses are erratic (one of our groups waited 45 minutes for a bus that never arrived) and taxis are crazy expensive. The fare from the train station--less than a mile--cost 30 euros. On the negative side, driving a car on those narrow Amalfi roads can be a bit stressful.
This was our second trip to Sorrento and we just love the area. Carolina and her family were lovely and easy to deal with and our entire family would gladly stay at Villa Castellano again. The hike up the hill is a small price to pay for having a room with this kind of view.

A great base to explore the Amalfi coast, Capri, Pompeii and Herculaneum
Our family of five stayed at the Villa for a week. It was a real home from home. An ideal base to explore the Gulf of Naples and the Amalfi coast. We are keen walkers and there were lots of towns, villages and beaches to explore following the extensive range of old roads and paths that pass very near to the Villa.

Aging Beauty
Be aware of the need for a car which is stated in one of the ads.. We walked most of the time and were caught in significant downpours every time. It is a beautiful walk however. No screens and were visited 2 nights by one or more of the feral cats in the neighborhood. A lovely woman met us and called a taxi upon leaving. It seems that two taxis showed up at different times and we went with the first. She tracked us down to make sure we were actually at the station...superior service.

Unbelievable View!
Our family of five adults loved the charm and history of this rental. A grand old villa, it offered spectacular views of the sea, Sorrento and Mount Vesuvius The common area, with its high ceilings and doors that open to the yard, was a perfect gathering space for our family. Bedrooms were spacious and clean. The bathrooms and kitchen, although functional, could do with some modernization. It was nice to have an outdoor eating area off the kitchen and the washer was a plus. We enjoyed walking down the old road into Sorrento although it worked well for us to have a car as the rental is above the town.

Villa Castellani
This beautiful villa is spacious, and full of charming antique furniture and decorations. We were very comfortable there. The kitchen was well equiped and catered well for our large family group. Plenty of seating and linen. The location offered magnificent views, but visits to Sorrento town were challenging by foot or bus due to the steepness of the road and the irregularity of the bus. The water supply was cut off for almost 24 hours and the agent confirmed this is a regular occurrence. The house has no backup plan and we were frustrated with the poor response by the host; ( For example, drinking water was only delivered to us at my insistence, and we had to cart water from a garden tap ourselves to bathe the children).

A little slice of Italy
My husband and I invited 5 friends to stay with us in this unique villa on the outskirts of Sorrento. We arrived with our suitcases in heavy rain but luckily knew to catch a bus up the hill as we had read other posts and the owner had provided us with good information. The villa is just as depicted in the photos and provided great accommodation for 7 people, in fact the ground floor which we used was so spacious we could easily find some space to ourselves if required. The rooms flowed out into the surrounding gardens with spectacular views over the bay of Naples both day and night. The kitchen worked well enough for simple meals which is all we required on holidays, as we ate out a lot as well. We planned to do a lot of walking on the holiday so walking in to town and occasionally back up (if the buses weren't running) was part of the deal. However unlike other accommodation, we could have easily parked a car if we had had one. It was a good location to explore the Amalfi coast by bus and exciting to see from afar, 'our' villa sitting on top of the hill on the way home. It is good basic accommodation and I would recommend it for another group.

Villa Castellano is an id...
Villa Castellano is an ideal place to stay if you want to explore the Sorrento peninsula and Amalfi Coast. It is situated in quiet area outside the town center and thus also the services (shops, restaurants etc.) are little further although you can reach the town by foot in about 15 minutes. The villa itself is wonderful and the view from the garden to the Gulf of Naples is the best part of the stay. Kitchen is equipped with all the necessary amenities and it is nice to have your meals outside the house under the pergola. We really enjoyed our stay and can recommend the villa for all persons who appreciate beauty, space and tranquillity.

"If I could give a 6 for ...
"If I could give a 6 for the surroundings of the villa, I would. The vista from the villa is spectacular! We had a very comfortable stay. Would work well with children. Enjoyed eating & making a meal in the very authentic kitchen. The villa is located just outside of the main town - very quiet at night which was nice for us. We used the cobblestone path to walk into town...about a 15 minute walk all downhill. Used it to get back in the evenings as well, though it definitely gives you a cardio workout since it''s about a 30 minute uphill walk. There is a bus stop right by the villa, but we only used it when we arrived.
If you are looking for a modern accommodation in the middle of town with lots of hustle & bustle, this is not the place for you. If you want to go back in time, live amongst antiques & an old fashioned kitchen with a beautiful yard & unbelievable panorama, this is the place for you!
