Generally, the peak season begins August 20-April 15. Realize that the earlier and later in the season, the darkness is less, so you generally have less of a window to view the lights. It is warmer, but your viewing period is shorter. I was just above the arctic circle for a week (Sept 2-11) and had 2 phenomenal evenings of lights viewing 4 hours and 2 hours. If you want to have a good opportunity to view the lights, check out the UAF Geophysical Aurora Forecast which can help predict peak times to have success. That being said, I have had excellent viewing with a 2 kp level. This year there have been a number of days with a 6 kp level which is extraordinary..
