Highland Lake House
About this house rental
Highland Lake House is a rare example of a private lakeside retreat, sited on level, natural terrain with over 250' of water frontage. Situated on a point, this is one of the few places on the lake where you can enjoy both full sunrise and partial sunset. This property comes with 2 docks and the deepest part of the lake is just a stone's throw away to enjoy boating, fishing and water sports. Highland Lake is 2 hours by car from Boston and 20 minutes from Portland. This 3 bedroom home with 4 beds (1 king, 1 queen, 2 twins), 1 folding bed, and 2 full baths, was originally built as a cottage in 1910, and since then has been converted to a year round home with a modern kitchen and amenities. Memorable features include a sandy beach, garage, on demand generator and a classic Victorian cottage look, complete with a turret and large wrap around porch with gorgeous panoramic views of Highland Lake. This is an excellent place to stay anytime of the year. In the spring the new plant and leaf growth is pretty, in the summer the lake is very nice for many activities, in the fall the leaf colors are beautiful, and in the winter the frozen lake offers interesting views and adventures.

We enjoyed everything about the Highland Lake House! Matt has made sure that everything you could need for a relaxing, fun vacation is provided. Kitchen’s well stocked, we loved using the kayaks, paddle boards, and pedal boats, beds are comfy, AC if you need it, great wrap around porch and screened in porch, plenty of room for our family of 6. We highly recommend this great home!

Amazing view, clean, and fully equipped with anything you may need. Matt was easily accessible, always responded quickly. Close to Portland and local neighborhood had awesome restaurants. Highly recommend this listing, you wont be disappointed.

We had 6 adults and there was plenty of space. Two large bathrooms very well appointed. The property was neat and clean. We enjoyed paddle boarding on the lake and going to Portland. Highly recommend this property. The kitchen was a hit with the folks on our trip who like to cook. The AC in each room kept the home cool even in the heat wave. Owner was responsive and easy to work with.

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Highland Lake House. It is an older home that has a mixture of old and new inside. The views are beautiful and can be seen just about everywhere from the property. The home was clean and well stocked. We did appreciate the upstairs air conditioning and the newer beds which are adjustable. My kids loved the huge tv's, games/puzzels, and all the lake activities that are available. Kayaking was their favorite and they were excited to try the paddle boards. The location is fabulous. It is close to Portland and Freeport and even closer to Allagash Brewing Company and other local breweries. There was even a bowling alley that the kids enjoyed.
As beautiful as the views are from the Highland Lake House, it is not a five star property. The home is Mainely weathered and it shows. While the kitchen was well stocked, it was odd that there was leftover food in the fridge and cabinets. There was a bed on the screen porch which we could not use because the sleeping conditions was just too warm and my kids felt like it was more outside of the house than inside. While an air mattress was provided, I think that a daybed in the upstairs common area would be a better situation for families with children.
Overall, I would recommend a stay at the Highland Lake House and I could see my family doing a return trip.

We stayed for 5 nights 6 days. Beautiful location, house was big enough for our family. House itself was upgraded so beautifully. My favorite was the wrap around porch. The only thing I wish was different was the lake area, not so good for swimming. I was lucky enough to know neighbors to swim from their area.

The location of the lake is wonderful, with views from almost every window. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you'd need, plenty of small items like chargers throughout the house, games, puzzles, and clean bathrooms with plenty of towels. It rained about half the time we were there, but we had plenty to do in the house and around the area. Lake is steps from the porch, so we could easily spend the whole day outside on the lake, grilling up our meals. Easy driving distance to Portland and many other areas. We recommend Chipman's farm stand up in Raymond (it's a further drive than the smaller stand, but worth it), and for lobster we went to Ancient Mariner in Westbrook (seemed to be the best price around). Matt was extremely responsive to any questions we had. Can't say enough good things about this place. Beautiful lake we were able to explore with the kayaks, paddleboards, and paddle boats provided. Even saw a bald eagle!

This is a great spot with beautiful views of the lake surrounding the house. There was a bald Eagle in the tree next to the front door when we arrived :) We were there for thanksgiving and it was very quiet and comfortable. The living room is great for a family visit because it’s got different places to sit- it was much more spacious than I expected. Check in was very straightforward.

We had a wonderful week at this house. The house was beautiful—a mix of old charm and modern updates making it a wonderful place to relax and get away. The host had everything we needed at the house, the kitchen was well equipped, it included access to the kayaks, and the Porch has a spectacular 180 view of the lake. And the easy access to Portland was a real plus. We hope to be back.

My family and I spent a week at this beautiful house right on Highland Lake. House is beautiful with everything you could need, a nice kitchen, great porch overlooking the lake and plenty of included watercraft (3 kayaks, 2 paddle boards and a paddle boat). Great fishing from the docks and very close to Portland and great restaurants and bars. Matt was super easy to work with as an owner as well!

Ideal Lake House Experiende.
We all found this house and location to be on that “it doesn’t get better than this” category. The house has stature and character and I incredible views through a panarama of windows. The wrap around porch and sunroom are perfect. And the lake access is child and adult friendly. We had no need to go anywhere. We had all we needed. Oh, also extremely conformfortabe and adjustable beds were a pleasure to sleep in.

The view from the porch was beautiful. The check in by the owner(who was waiting when we arrived) was great. parking was substantial including use of the garage. Location was very good-close to places we like to visit. Use of the watercraft was really nice. We missed having some sort of motorcraft but can see where that is not feasible there. Sleeping arrangements were very good including sleep number beds. Kitchen was very useful and appliances. We were there during a very hot week and could have used another A/C unit. Needs pot holders. All in all this was a very enjoyable rental, especially sionce we were their first renters.
