Hotel was in excellent location for my needs. The lobby and restaurant are in good shape. However, the rooms are needing an update. They were in very poor shape.

A great hotel to start our Drive on Route 66.
Perfectly located to see a lot of Chicago.
Just need more lights in the room

Good service and fantastic view-room furnishings were nice, and exterior and lobby area was very nice. Rooms and floors were in strong need of an update and somewhat on the dingy side. However, very economical for great service, excellent location and incredible lake view!

Horrible. So gross. Dirty. Old. I slept in my clothes. Didn’t want to take them off in the gross bed.

I like the character of this vintage hotel, brass details and elegance of a bygone era. Remodle work makes it modern in spacious, clean, comfortable room... The lakeside views from the upper floors were superb and really enhanced my visit. Also the rates were competitive and affordable I will definitely stay at The Congress if and when I return to Chicago!

The bathroom needs to be urgently rebuild.

We stayed five nights and enjoyed the whole time!
Condition of hotel is dated, but does not take away from the stay. Hot water worked. Room was clean. Bed was comfortable. TV is tiny, but you won't want to stay up watching it anyhow because of all the fun you'll have during your day!
Location is what you pay for here! Easy walk to "L" and bus stops. Dunkin' for morning coffee is a two minute walk. Hotel restaurant breakfast is reasonable at about $12-15 per person, but pretty plain.
Overall the age of the property is more charming than a detriment. We stayed on the 13th floor and really enjoyed riding the fancy elevator adorned with brass doors. No noise complaints. Smells a tad bit of cleaning supplies, but not a big deal. Stairway smells of pot in case you're sensitive, but then again Chicago is a "green" city haha
All in all will stay here again!

Had a remolded/upgraded room. View of the lake it was nice and clean.

Amazing view and very nice room

Booked a room with a lake view (and paid extra for it) but was given a view of the train instead. When I brought it to the staff I was told I could have a lake view for an extra $25 a night. I explained that I already paid the extra for the lake view but staff refused to move my room. Hotel was old and run down. Definitely needs some serious TLC and rehabilitation. Would not return to this hotel again. Very disappointed.

It’s a nice hotel and a nice room but with a slow service and especially in the restaurant of the hotel it takes them so long to get your breakfast ready they made me be late for my meeting even tho i told them that i have a meeting please could you be fast and i had to leave without eating breakfast
The horrible thing was that i forgot my diamond ring in my room bathroom and when i called them about it they said we cleaned the room already and they sent a guy to check which is obvious that you won’t find anything because the room has been cleaned and the guy was super rude on the phone call when i was asking him about that and I’m 100% sure that i left in the bathroom because i took it off to wash my face and i didn’t wear it again 😡😡😡😡

The bed was comfy, the view was great, and we loved the high ceilings. The toilet liked to run for a long time, but that didn’t really impact our stay. We will be back.

We stayed in a 2 BR suite. Had been updated and beds were comfortable. Not a lot of seating. Halls need updated. Overall would stay here again

The rooms were updated but the mattress was not very comfortable.

The state of the hotel is not great. It's not terrible but not great either. We got lucky and got a view of the lake and surrounding landmarks like the Alder planetarium, Navy Pier etc. However the hot water took a LONG time to come out, about 20 mins and the street outside was really noisy. They also obvious painted EVERYTHING in the room with white paint but in a bad way.

Congress Plaza is a classic old hotel with 'great bones', very convenient location, and views from the Michigan Street side that are as good as any in Chicago. Yes, it's old and certainly aspects are very worn. But our room, the bathroom, and all the hallways were sparkling clean. You wouldn't choose it to impress someone, but it is a good value and we will stay here again.

A perfectly acceptable base for exploring Chicago, some of the rooms are a little tired but overall very comfortable.

The Good: The view from our window was beautiful-unmatched. The Bell man, Steve, was perfect: friendly, professional and anticipated and met all our needs. The location is wonderful for visiting the city.
The Bad: Our room was not cleaned during our stay, although on check-out, the front dest worker said that it should have been. The worst experience was being stuck in an elevator for 30 minutes as security kept asking me had I done this or that to get myself unstuck. When they were able to pry the doors open, I was given a form to fill out-an incident report-and sent on my way. I think someone in management should probably have reached out to me. While I was not in danger, it was pretty unpleasant and worrying. Have you been stuck in an elevator before? Not an experience that I would choose to repeat. I have stayed at the Congress Plaza Hotel in the past and had planned on returning, but now I am reconsidering that idea.

I wasn’t expecting anything too special, but the hotel really was lovely on the outside and the location is GREAT. They let me check in early, which was very nice. I was in a newly redone room, it still smelled like new paint and finishes looked nice. However, it was likely a cheap remodel because the furniture was already degrading, and the drawers wouldn’t stay closed. Also, the bed was very hard, pillows were lumpy, and the towels were stained and thin. The room hadn’t been well cleaned, and there was a stash of used tissues piled up behind the nightstand. None of this was far outside of my expectations, and all would have been okay for what I paid. The thing that really did me in was the temperature and airflow. I was on the 11th floor in a room that didn’t get any direct sunlight, but it was hot like a sauna in my room at all times. The weather outside was cool and brisk (April), but there was no way to get any airflow at all. I couldn’t sleep because I was so hot and couldn’t cool down. The room had an ancient looking unit that said “climate control” which seemed to just be a fan, but didn’t do anything to control the temperature. It was miserable and made me avoid spending any time in my room I didn’t have to.

I’m so glad my colleague and I stayed at this historic hotel. The rooms were a bit dated but the price was great and it is across the street from Grant park , Millenium park, Lake Michigan. Only a few minutes walk to the electric train that took us straight to McCormick place convention center.
Easy walk to the redline, nice restaurants and coffee shops, the Chicago River. This hotel has a storied history, and reputed to be the most haunted hotel in Chicago. Look that up! It did not disappoint! 😲 This was our first trip to Chicago and I wish I’d stayed longer!

Its a hotel so full of history ... great place to stay in the middle of the city
the Staff is fantastic ... especially Gabriel at the front desk. He was great!
Would for sure stay again, just know, it is a little bit dated in the rooms

Good location but the hotel has seen better times. The room was updated but with but with cheap furnishings. Even the shower faucets were improperly installed. Sheets and towels were not much better. The restaurant was lacking several items on the menu.

Location is good - decent value for money if traveling with a friend (but kills everything romantic). The hotel has definitely seen better days. I would swallow the bitter pill and pay up for a better hotel next time

I had zero hot water! called to see why. was told to leave the water running for 20 minutes to get hot water due to the building being old?! 20 minutes?!?!?!? even after running the water for 20 minutes I still had nothing. HUGE WASTE OF WATER!!! all the fixtures in the bathroom were loose and off the wall. When I checked out was never asked about my stay or anything. just "thanks, bye". My room never received house keeping during the 3 days I was there. I will make sure to never stay here again.

Positives - Fabulous location on the Loop, close to all kinds of transit and within walking distance of the Museum Campus and Millennium Park. The room was also clean and neat.
Negatives - The beds were too firm and the pillows were worn out. Additionally, the Wi-Fi was spotty - we were able to connect our phones but not our computer (thankfully this wasn't a work trip). The TV, meanwhile, had a poor picture, few channels, and wasn't able to connect to Netflix, Hulu, etc. After a long day of sightseeing, the lack of entertainment options was frustrating.

Love our stay at the hotel, kids couldn’t stop talking about how nice the rooms were

No air conditioning in the spring. Was able to open windows but train is right outside window. Walls are thin. For a light sleeper the bed was hard as a rock. Overall not bad if you don’t want a cooler room and you don’t care about the mattress. Service was great HK did bring me a fan. Room was clean but entire place smells of marijuana.

The location it's great, very convenient since it is close to museums and main attractions. The hotel itself was old and not in a good shape. Our room was not cleaned one day and the other days the cleaning crew barely clean the room. First thing we saw when we got to the room were other people's hair on the bed, gross.

Great hotel lots of history. One of the oldest but nicely renovated.

The staff was very polite. Room was clean and view was amazing. Must have recently been painted, lots of paint dripped into shower and not cleaned up. Bed and pillows were NOT comfortable at all. Ok stay but will not book here again.

This hotel was disgusting. There was someone’s dirty clothes left in my room. The bathtub was filthy from not being cleaned before I entered the room, the rooms were freezing cold and the lights kept turning off.

Helpful staff but older hotel and in need of repair. For example, our door wouldn’t lock when we left as the door plate was missing a screw. Maintenance came and fixed it but we were late for a meeting.

The hotel’s common areas are run down and not clean. There was food in the hall on the floor in different locations. The hotel room itself is comfortable and nice. The shower did not have hot water. I called the front desk and they sent a maid that didn’t know English to fix it. Not her fault but she had no ability to fix it.
I left without taking a shower
Won’t stay here again.

My fiancé and I had a wonderful time it felt like a home away from home.
