A fabulous location and home which met our requirements. We enjoyed our stay so much that we would like to return to continue our experience. The photos are accurate and describe the house better than words. The garden is thoughtfully landscaped providing a variety of plants and seating areas to encourage thoughtful serenity. The house is well equipped, however I suggest that the filthy fan kept in the bedroom closet be replaced or cleaned. The TV did not function even when following the instructions provided but we simply used our streaming device so it was not a problem. The hot tub only had jets functioning for two seating areas which worked out as it was just the two of us. The location is very good - 18 minutes from Hilo; 25 minutes from Volcano. Restaurants and groceries are 15-20 minutes drive. Overall it is a quiet neighbourhood. However, be very aware that the empty lot adjacent to the property is used as access to the shoreline by some shady characters who live out of their vehicle. We observed these unpleasant individuals daily when the weather was fine. Fortunately the weather worked in our favour and the wind and surf were high so the vagrant did not appear for the last few days of our stay.

We stayed for a week, we loved the location. The management and housekeeping were very rude. We asked for a couple of towels, since there were only 1 per person. Housekeepers came over and requested to come in the house so they could verify how many towels were there, they also made remarks of "sometimes people say there are 4 people when there are more". Our cousin lives in Maui and came over for a night for my son's 2nd birthday. The jacuzzi went out, and management didn't respond for 3 hours, when they did they were not helpful at all. With this location you need the pool and jacuzzi to be functional. A lady came to clean the pool, went to the side and smoke a cigarette right next to open windows. Having a baby, we were very upset about that. Very unprofessional management, housekeepers and pool cleaner. For the amount of money, they made us feel unwelcome. Unfortunately, we won't be back here.

This is a stunning property on the lava cliffs near the town of Pahoa. The house is clean and spacious with a large comfortable kitchen/living/dining area overlooking spectacular ocean views. At night it was amazing to hear the crashing waves mixed with the chirps of the coqui frogs. It was easy to take nearby day trips to Hawaii volcanoes national park, Hilo, and South Puna. All our family agreed that this was one of our favorite rentals. We would love to stay here again.

We would have loved to have found salt and pepper, olive oil and vinegar, foil and plastic wrap for staples in the home. These basic items are missing. The pool is much small than portrayed in the photo. It is a narrow lap pool.We did love the location and the sound of the waves splashing nearby.

This house...is just OK. Ocean in the back is amazing. However, it's far off the beaten path w no cell service. This house has 3 lockboxes. There's a non-working lockbox on the back porch, 1 non-working by the garage and 1 on the back side of a pole by the front door that does work. We kept sending pics & videos asking if we were trying the right lockbox and they kept saying yes and we just weren't pulling hard enough to open it. Clearly they didn't know which lockbox was the right 1 or what it looked like. We were outside in the rain trying to get in the house for over 30 minutes trying to contact mgt w/ limited cell service. We were late to our dinner reservations b/c of this. There's no A/C in the home (not in the description), and not enough fans provided to cool it down. It's not in the safest feeling neighborhood, and there was a rowdy party across the street playing excessively loud rap music. We were very nervous being there alone as we didn't have any cell service to call for help if needed, and you have to sleep w all the windows open so as not to die from the heat. We were nervous all night that someone from the party might make their way to the house. We hid our belongings before heading to dinner b/c we were worried about the types of people wandering about. The hot tub was broken. A curtain was missing in front of the toilet by the front window in the master bedroom. We stayed 1 night and cut our losses and found another place to stay

This house is absolutely gorgeous, and if you're lucky enough to have a clear morning, the sunrise setting can't be beat. We had not realized that the house was not air conditioned, and upon arrival it was HOT, but truly as soon as you get things opened up it cools off pretty quickly. The property manager was very responsive to questions - the hot tub wasn't working and she was able to tell us what to do immediatley. And FYI there is an alarm system panel inside the door, but no alarm to set (this is not mentioned in the house book). The only thing we did not love about this property was how far it is from everything. This side of the island does not have as many restaurants or shopping areas, and it is a long drive to anything, anyway. I would recommend this place for a "get away from it all" vacation - the kitchen is well equipped and the home and yard really invite you to stick around and relax.

The house was exactly as advertised-right on the ocean. Our evenings were spent having drinks and enjoying the scenery. The pool was great for our kids. Unfortunately the hot tub was not working at the time, which was a bummer, but normally it would be running. The rooms were nice. The house is a little ways from restaurants and grocery stores, so be sure to stock up on food before getting there. Nice walks from the house as well. Be sure to watch the sunrise at the end of the road if you're awake at that time.

We stayed at this property for our honeymoon, it was absolutely perfect! Beautiful views from all over the home, pool is excellent, hot tub was great and the lava rock ocean views were incredible! We saw a family of turtles in the water every day that we were there! I recommend them to everyone! In addition to an amazing property, the customer service is even better! We had two issues (caused by us) and they were so helpful and very sweet even though we messed something up! :)

We loved our stay here! It was fantastic being that close to the ocean, having a pool to toss the kids in daily while the adults planned the next adventure, and seeing the stars come out at night. The beautiful carved doors throughout the home were a surprise bonus. They have a policy where you can leave your extra food or sunscreen or other things for the next renters if you don't want to take them home, which has resulted in a very well stocked house. Our kids had fun with the games and puzzle cabinet. I would recommend that the property management replace some of the window screens, as a couple have small tears where bugs can get through if you're opening the windows to cool the house down. Closing those couple of windows solves the problem, once you realize it needs to be done. Also, be aware that you will be hearing the coqui frogs at night. That was a bonus for our family, except one kid who had some trouble getting to sleep the rare evenings she wasn't worn out from swimming, snorkeling, beaching and hiking. You might want to discuss with your party before committing. It worked well for us, though, and we'd happily stay here again!

We’ve never had a better vacation than this stay at Hale Mar on the Big Island! The house is right in the ocean with waves crashing into the cliffs or rolling gently. The sapphire blue ocean contrasted with the lush green jungle is a colorful delight! We actually cancelled a couple of activities because the property is SO relaxing we just swam in the pool, soaked in the hot tub and genuinely enjoyed each others presence. Hale Mar and the staff at Salt Water gave our family just what we needed. Thank you!

We were a family of 5 adults who spent Xmas holidays at Hale Mar. The property had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The kitchen was well equipped and the large tables both inside and on the patio nicely accommodate our family. In addition to the spacious eating areas, there was also a large Island, which enhanced our meal preparation. The pool was nice and refreshing while the hot tub was great for relaxing after a day of touring. Hale Mar was nicely appointed and had many furnishings that allowed for an enjoyable experience.Hale Mar is about a 30 minute drive from Hilo, so we tried to organize our shoppings and sight seeing to reduce the driving time in order to maximize our time at this oceanfront property. The local (close proximity) restaurant Kaleos Bar & Grill is highly recommended.

Loved our stay at the Hale Mar! It was the perfect get away house for our family. It was quiet and relaxing. We enjoyed reading books in the hammock. Swimming in the pool and sunbathing on the lounge chair. The master bedroom is spacious and comfortable. Would def recommend a stay here.

This house has the most beautiful view I’ve ever stayed at!! The yard, pool, and hot tub were wonderful! The house was perfect for our family of five. Had all the necessities needed for our stay. Our kids kept hiding out in the upstairs master bedroom because of the view and the ocean breezes! It was nice to get some laundry done and relax poolside after a few busy days of touristing. You won’t regret staying here-it really is paradise!

We loved our stay! The house is well equipped, beds are comfortable, pool was a blast and the yard was beautifully landscaped. Plenty of space to swim, play football in the yard, swing on the hammock, have a cocktail on the porch, etc..
The best part of the house was the views and sound of crashing waves as we slept.
Plenty of towels, linens, and blankets.
They provide beach towels for the pool.
A few notes- there is no air conditioning (as is common in Hilo due to high energy costs). So, when you first enter the house it will be stuffy. Open the windows and turn on the fans. It will air out in no time and we never felt hot after that first entrance.
The road to the house is 4 miles down a slightly hilly road. It is no big deal to most people, but it did make our kids sick to their stomachs. This does not change my overall impression of the house nor location, but just something to be aware of.
About 45 minutes to Volcano National Park, 15-20 minutes to the grocery store and 30-35 to downtown Hilo (airport and restaurants).

Our family had amazing stay. The home was impeccably clean, thoughtfully furnished and professionally appointed. No detail was spared. The groundd, pool, and hot tub were wonderful to enjoy the ocean views. It is a little further from Hilo than we had anticipated, but that was mostly due to the rush hour traffic. Our family of 5 loved everything about this house! It was spacious enough to spread out in, and has a wonderful yard, filled with many beautiful Hawaiian plants and trees, and lots of birds and gecko friends. We spent a very relaxing 5 nights here at the end of March, and enjoyed the pool and hot tub and wandering the cliffs out side the fence. My favorite memory will be sitting on the lanai outside the master bedroom with my coffee, watching the sea turtles swim in the waves. There always seemed to be a number of turtles playing around and keeping me fully entertained! The master bathroom has been renovated since the listing pictures were done, and we were surprised with an enormous, beautiful walk in shower. Our teenage daughter was thrilled, as she loves nothing more than a good spa like shower! The kitchen was well stocked with everything that we needed, and there was plenty of towels and beach towels. The laundry room was great, and I made good use of it, as we spent a lot of time snorkeling at various beaches nearby, and swimming in the pool. There was a great cooler and lots of beach supplies which we used for our excursions. Laura really has thought of everything, and was wonderful to communicate with. We fully recommend this wonderful house, and hope to be back again some day!

We had a great stay; very different from our beach stay on Oahu, but in a good way. The surrounding tropical foliage makes you feel like you are in a beachfront rainforest. The Indonesian vibe of the house is pleasing and very much complements the landscape. This is a great place to stay to visit Volcano National Park. The master bedroom is amazing. The sound of the ocean and the tree frogs lulled me to sleep each night. I have not slept that well in a very long time. The pool and hot tube are great amenities as there is no ocean access.

Hale Mar was the final stop on our Hawaiian vacation. We loved the outdoor spaces, the hot tub, pool, and lanai. The ocean is literally steps away and we enjoyed the 100' of ocean front and sounds of the surf from every room. The grounds are meticulously maintained with mature palms and tropical vegetation and of course that fabulous pool. The outdoor areas of Hale Mar are 5+ stars!
Inside felt like a 3 star experience. The house had an overbearing musty smell which dissipated once we opened the windows. Two of the sliding glass doors on the first floor had broken locks, but security bars were provided. We also noticed two of the screen doors had ripped screens, so we kept those doors shut. We were surprised to find a large wet bar with full sized refrigerator in the master which was taped shut and labeled 'not for guest use', though that didn't affect our stay as the master suite is quite spacious. We were disappointed to find stained sheets and bleached/worn towels in the master suite. After seaching the house, we found clean sheets and extra pillows in the office armiroe on the first level. We were woken up in the middle of the night by an alarm on the Geo Spring Water Filter in the laundry room located just below the master suite which needed to be reset. We also found undesireable pests inside when we arrived. When I contacted the owner, Laura, she was very responsive to my concerns.
Overall, Hale Mar is a gem. With attention to detail and some updates, the inside living areas could rate close to the outdoor experience. The solid wood doors of Hale Mar are each uniquely carved and beautiful. The first floor bath is updated and the towels are new and soft. Ample beach towels are provided and the kitchen is sufficient for a short stay. The location, though a good 30 minutes from Hilo is tranquil - especially for those of us who love falling asleep to crashing waves.

My four year old daughter explains it best, this place is magical! She insists the house and yard were a magical land. I don't think she was far off either!
The house was perfect for my family, it had everything we needed for our week visit, plus more than we expected. We loved playing games together that we found in the cabinet.
Waking up to the beautiful view and hearing the waves crash was probably one of my favorite parts. We made breakfast every morning thanks to the kitchen having all the pots and pans we could need.
The neighborhood is SO quiet and if you do see the neighbors they all smile and wave.
Laura the owner has little helpful notes placed around the house and a binder of helpful information. I personally really liked this personal touch, very helpful!
I would 100% recommended renting this property. We are already dreaming up our next visit and hope to stay here again.

We loved staying at Hale Mar for a week in February. The house was big and comfortable, with a well-stocked kitchen so that we could cook up all the delicious food we bought at the farmer’s markets. We used the charcoal grill too. The bedrooms has comfortable beds and we slept so well. The upstairs master suite was a dream! We slept with the windows open each night just listening to the waves and coqui. Unbelievably relaxing! The outdoor space was incredible. Comfortable loungers and a nice table to eat under the covered lanai. My kids spend countless hours in the pool, and the hot tub was a bonus! Watching the stars from the hot tub at night was just pure Heaven! We loved walking around the lava cliffs and looking at the ocean. We saw turtles swimming almost every morning. We could even see them swimming from the upstairs balcony. Having a washer and dryer was great with kids and the beach. We drove all around the island in our week - to Kona to go to Hapuna Beach, to Waimea, to the black sand beach and Volcanoes National Park, but our favorite beach was Richardson Beach Park in Hilo. There we had fantastic snorkeling, saw sea turtles, and enjoyed the sunshine on the black sand with the snow-capped volcano in the background. So lovely! We ate at Ola Brewing Co in Hilo for lunch which was very good! We also enjoyed the Tin Shack Bakery in Pahoa. We hope to come back sometime! Thank you for sharing your wonderful house with us!

As my wife and I drove from the Hilo airport down the rustic road to HALE MAR we were not sure what would await us. Upon opening the door and seeing the living room and its spectacular view of the Pacific, our reaction was a simple but deep WOW! As we toured the house and its multitude of well-conceived attractions, we were truly impressed by the range of thoughtful amenities that were provided. Our son, daughter-in-law, and grandson had similar reactions.
+ The lead-in information and communications with Laura were superb. Her 10-page "Information for Guests," provided before our arrival, was exceptionally helpful -- including excellent directions from the Hilo airport to Hale Mar. Onsite, the 3-ring binder of local and Big Island restaurants and things to do was impressive.
+ The bedroom and bath facilities were excellent and well stocked. The upstairs master bedroom had a large closet, chest of drawers, and hand weights. Ceiling fans, good lighting, and comfortable seating arrangements served us well.
+ The amount of thought given to provisioning Hale Mar was noteworthy. From the kitchen to the multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, we were gratified by the planning and material given to making for optimal living. Between the house and the ocean were a hot tube and a long pool with attractive water-fountain.
+ Needless to note, the setting and outdoor facilities were phenomenal. As a geologist, all I needed was to commune with the rocks and the ocean, but our five-person family enjoyed walks that paralleled the ocean, were through tropical flora and fauna, and had numerous lava-rock sites for viewing the Pacific and its coastline.
+ Evenings resounded with frog 'conversations.' We did not see any exotic mongoose or feral pig evidence, but whales did appear briefly offshore. We greatly enjoyed walking along the lanes, and spotting birds and the amazing flora.
IN SUM: Our family had a truly superb time at Hale Mar. We give it an "A" grade on all counts.
