The pool
As a British family, our adventurous trip to Algeria, despite the UK government's travel warnings, started on a sour note at the Sofitel Algiers Hamma Garden. Our primary concern was safety, especially with my pregnant wife and our blonde, 3-year-old son who tends to attract attention.
We specifically chose Sofitel for its airport shuttle service to avoid local taxis. Despite informing the hotel of our flight details and receiving assurances, our experience was far from satisfactory. We waited for over two hours past midnight at the shuttle stop, unable to reach the driver or the hotel. This was distressing, more so with local men approaching us, their intentions unclear.
Our arrival at the hotel around 1 am was met with the news that it was fully booked and the staff were too busy to attend to calls. My expression of feeling unsafe was met with a promise of assistance from the concierge the next morning, which felt like a cold comfort.
In the morning, I spoke to Hakim, the receptionist, about our ordeal, hoping for at least a complimentary breakfast and a late checkout as a gesture of goodwill. His response was unapologetic, offering only the late checkout. This interaction left us feeling undervalued and ignored.
We did enjoy the swimming pool, but that was the only positive aspect of our stay. The hotel's food was average and overpriced. Contrastingly, Algiers was a pleasant experience, with most locals showing genuine hospitality, a stark contrast to the treatment we received at Sofitel Algiers Hamma Garden. We will not be returning to this hotel and cannot recommend it to others, especially those concerned with safety and customer service.

The price for the rooms was less than quoted on the original booking, which was a pleasant surprise. Hotel reception staff spoke good English and made good suggestions regarding the local area. The airport shuttle was reliable and prompt. The room was very comfortable and clean, with no noise and effective air conditioning. Clean, well-maintained pool. Excellent value and delicious evening meals in the restaurant and friendly staff with great conversation (even free starters given with our meals at no charge). Very good hotel security. Free access to the adjacent Hamma Garden included. 1 mile walk from town centre. Would definitely recommend!

room service food not tasty and the glasses always smell bad. even when I ask them for clean glasses that does not smell bad it still smells bad. we were disappointment me and my wife when returning to the hotel after a great dinner party because we had a small sweet like donate and we were told in a not friendly way that is not allowed and my wife was so upset. the first room we took took 517 was not safe as room next door can easily have access to our room from the window and the window floor was dirty with cigarets. not enough info was produced at check in such as breakfast hours and location, internet, left direction, facilities such as restaurants, etc. house keeping staff were very friendly.

The hotel itself is great! The pool is large and has great views, the breakfast buffet has a big selection, and the room was super comfortable.
We would definitely recommend staying here, our expectations were exceeded!
