Truly the stay of a lifetime! This review may sound over the top, but it's truly difficult to put into words how wonderful our trip was.
Firstly, Bruce and his team are fantastic. Before we even arrived, they went out of their way to provide recommendations for activities to do and on what to prepare for to make the stay as comfortable as possible. On arrival, we were picked up and shown around town, which was very helpful, and then given the keys. Throughout our stay, Jolene, one of the team, unobtrusively checked in with us, continuing to provide amazing recommendations. She was lovely, warm and felt like a long time friend.
The home itself is a cozy, spacious hideaway in paradise! The photos do not do the place justice, the space was tastefully appointed and entirely private. The outdoor saltwater pool was incredible, second only to naps in the private cabana. Other highlights included drinking morning coffee on the covered deck watching the sunrise on the panoramic ocean view, walking 5 minutes to the beach for some of the best snorkeling in Fiji, and spending hours exploring the coastline with SUPs provided by our hosts.
This stay felt like living at a private resort in paradise. Our only regret was not staying longer!
Thank you so much Bruce and your team! We'll be back!

The house was perfect for our family of four - 2 adult sons, for us to celebrate a birthday.
Spacious, clean, tidy and the most stunning views. The 125 steps from the road were a good work out. The pool was very welcoming when we reached the house!
Close enough to town where there were many good options for dining.
The management of the property was flawless with Jolene always ready with a smile and super helpful; she really was the icing on the cake for our stay.
Great snorkelling across the road from the property.
Would definitely stay again.

Beautiful, spacious home with gracious hosts. We loved our stay at Bamboo House. Simon, who gave us a ride from the airport and showed us around Savusavu, Tuks and Sekony who helped us with our bags up the 100+ stairs to the home, Jolene who met us and gave us the ins and outs of the house, all made us feel so welcome. The beach out front is a little hard to access, especially at low tide, but once you’re in, the snorkeling is magnificent. And the dive shop at the nearby Cousteau resort has surprisingly reasonable rates to go out with the dive boat for even more interesting snorkeling. Definitely go to the waterfall with Simon, and don’t hesitate to take a swim—absolutely delightful. Wish I could say we’ll be back, but even though not likely, we’ll carry a little bit of Fiji in our hearts!

The home is beautifully presented, and has almost everything you need for your stay.
The views of Savusavu bay from the verandah is simply magnificent. Relaxing in the Salt water Infinity Pool looking out to the sunset was breathtaking.
All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the House of Bamboo. Thank you to our host, Bruce was a wonderful experience.

It’s difficult to put into words how stunning this property is and how well it checked off all the boxes of what we wanted in a vacation getaway. From the privacy and lush vegetation to the incredible ocean views from both the house and private infinity pool we couldn’t have asked for more. Located directly across the street from the ocean we were able to kayak and snorkel right there. The steps to the property were not an issue - in my opinion the view and privacy at the top is so worth the walk up.
Jolene the property manager is very personable and friendly and was very helpful and quick to respond to all of our questions and needs during our stay.
Overall this property and the island were the highlight of our vacation!

My husband and I were traveling with friends.
We were all so excited about our stay and we were not disappointed.
The house was private at the top of the hill with an amazing view of the water.
We enjoyed a day out with Bruce and Jen on their 44ft catamaran...what a perfect day! We also had a private Lovo dug on the property.
We can't say enough about our stay at the Bamboo house! Lima was such a great help and Bablu (taxi) took us to a beautiful waterfall.
Thanks again Bruce and Jen for making our trip so exciting!!!

Good, but could be great with a few tweaks.
My dealing with Jolene was mostly great.
Unfortunately due to an unexpected cyclone we didn't get there til two days later. However at one point it wasn't looking like we were going to be able to make it due to the cyclone and the bushfires in Australia which was causing a lot of the airlines to ground their planes.
When there was a very real possibility we wouldn't be able to make it at all, we advised Jolene. Sadly, they weren't very helpful and weren't willing to discuss a refund or even a partial refund despite it being out of everyones hands. Because of this, it tainted the experience.
Thankfully we made it but there are a couple of things they could be doing to better the experience.
1. Be willing to compromise under extenuating circumstances i.e a cyclone, bushfires, flights being cancelled etc.
2. Offer to drive your guests back to the airport.
3. You advertise wifi. The exact wording is” free wifi broadband internet” why then are we being told its capped at 8GB and we need to pay extra for more?
4. If you're going to keep it capped, offer a easy way to check the usage and advertise that on your listing.
5. On the listing it also says “Complimentary kayaks, paddle boards and snorkel gear available” when we got there Jolene made a point of stating “we’ve supplied the kayaks free of charge because of the issues you’ve all had getting here” so…that was some false goodwill generated. Disappointing.
6. You offer one roll of toilet paper. How is this not already included in a not so cheap accommodation? Its a basic human requirement. Especially since everyone prior has had to buy toilet paper and likely left some behind. Meaning the owner is not actually paying for the said toilet paper. And why not tell us while taking us to shops before we get to the house. Why find out after we get there which then forces us to go back (inconvenient) or to ration it out for a night between 4 people.
7. Provide bikes for your guests. That way they could bike into town instead of calling taxi’s all the time. You advertise hiring these but it could be a good way to stay competitive. Especially in the environmental climate we’re living in these days.
Hopefully this is received in the way it was intended. We did enjoy our time there and would love to visit again one day!

Hidden Paradise
The House of Bamboo is such a treat. Tucked away with beautiful views it truly is a hidden paradise.
The team that looks after The House of Bamboo is top notch and is available to support you throughout your stay. They really go above and beyond to capture what you would like for your holiday, and SavuSavu is a great base.
If you are looking to get away from the crowds and relax in a hidden paradise or ensconce yourself in true Fijian daily life, this place has something for everyone.
We so hope to get back one day and see all our wonderful new friends.

We loved our stay at the House of Bamboo in Savusavu. The views from the balcony are amazing. The pool was fun and there is so much to do in and around Savasavu. Bruce and Jolene were perfect hosts. Thank you for sharing the House of Bamboo with us.

Most Relaxing Vacation Ever!
We spent a week at The House of Bamboo and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The view is amazing and the sky is constantly changing. We used the pool every day even in the warm rain and at night too. We soaked up the sunset one night from the pool and then enjoyed watching the birds and the bats flying until the stars came out. The house is well appointed with everything we needed. We really enjoyed cooking our own meals using fresh produce we bought on Saturday from the Savusavu market. I tried a rice cooker for the first time since it is there! We used the provided coffee and sugar every morning. The bed is very comfortable although we ended up not needing the comforter as it is plenty warm this time of year. There were no issues with hot water and the ability to do laundry at the house makes it possible to travel to Savusavu with only a few changes of clothes!
We loved spending time talking with Jolene and learning about Fiji and the local area. Her advice and suggestions were invaluable. We walked the beach past the Cousteau resort at low tide, used the provided snorkeling equipment to look at the fish and coral in the bay, took the kayaks out around the small islands south of the resort, and rented a car from Budget for a day and drove over to Labasa and back.
We strongly recommend The House of Bamboo for a lovely vacation spot. Don't forget the sunscreen - the sun is powerful in Fiji!!!

BREATHTAKINGLY BEAUTIFUL
It's hard to put into words how beautiful this property is and how amazing our vacation was. The view is breathtaking and the hospitality of Bruce, Jen & Jolene ... well let's say we were never treated like strangers but rather like old friends coming for a visit.
The stairs are a bit daunting ... you will be thankful for the seat at the top as most times we collapsed right there to catch our breath! The mosquitoes were aplenty (bug spray is a MUST), and getting/keeping hot water running was a challenge. But, I wouldn't trade a thing to stay in a resort. It was so cool to go to town, visiting various markets for our supplies. The people in Savasavu are welcoming and friendly ... one couple befriending us and inviting us to dinner in their home our 2nd night there. A whole different world than what we are used to!!!
An outing on Bruce's catamaran is a must! It was one of the highlights of our trip. If a visit to Fiji is not on your bucket list, add it ... you will have the time of your life!!!

Bamboo House was worth every step to get there. Bruce and Joliene were responsive and so gracious. This was the start of a year long trip but it will be hard to top Bamboo House. The House was well equipped and the outside space for dining and relaxing was used at all times of day and night. Be sure to have a massage under the bure.

Beautiful home, unique location, lovely people
A really nice vacation home, spacious, functional, tastefully decorated with a few interesting art objects from India (and Africa?). The view of Savusavu Bay is a never ending spectacle, changing with the time of the day (and night), the weather, the tide. Up at the house, you live in complete privacy, yet the owner, Bruce, and the property manager, Jolene, who go out of their way to help when needed, can often be found in person around their office, down near the road. The same is true for their two friendly Fijian workmen, Tuks and Wise; they can also tell you a lot about life of Fijians in the jungle which will soon be forgotten. -- If the mosquitoes bother you around the house, you can escape into the pool. The windows of the house are protected with insect screens and can be left open day and night. -- Don't miss snorkeling, paddleboarding or kayaking right out front. -- Bruce's Sekawa River Tour was an unforgettable experience, with sailing over the Bay on his catamaran in wind and rain, and paddling on the quiet river along the virgin tropical jungle. -- Would have loved to stay at this place, with these people, for longer than ten days.

We booked both the House of Bamboo and the Pod House for a group of 5 adults in one family. We stayed here during cyclone Keni which wasn't the perfect time but you can't plan the weather. The cyclone contributed to loss of electricity, dirty water and no hot water, which added a bit of a downer when added to the bad weather and poor visability for diving which is why we had returned to this location. On a positive note there were books, DVD's and some board games provided which provided some entertainment.
It was very nice to have some basic supplies such as milk, water, coffee, tea and sugar when we arrived later than expected due to flight delays. Being a Sunday the shops had all closed by the time we arrived in town to shop for supplies which we weren't told about during our check-in. There are plenty of places to eat out and our favourite was Arun's Taste of Hidden Paradise which was Indian and very authentic.
Our first day and the day before the cyclone arrived we used the 2 standup paddle boards and double kayak, thinking that they were included in our hire of the house. We thought we could use these at any time and would have used them much more BUT we then got a bill for $80 FJ (A$50). When you pay so much to hire both houses for 7 nights you really don't expect to be charged to use surf craft that are just lying around the property, especially when we carried it to the beach and back again and didn't require supervision. We also had a green pool which wasn't that nice to swim in - I needed to ask the owner to put some chlorine in. I won't return to this property which is a shame as it could have been so much better if the owner wasn't so greedy.

Let me start off by saying the Bruce and Jolene are fantastic people. The only negative about the place is the 100+ steps from the bottom, but without the elevation, you wouldn't have the amazing view. After the 3rd day, it didn't seem so bad. The infinity pool overlooking the bay is great for cooling off on those hot days. The sunset views from the deck are amazing! Bruce took us out on his catamaran, which was a blast. I highly recommend doing that. We had great massages at the house on two different days from a couple who live a few houses down. All four of us highly recommend getting the massages from this great couple. After our second set of massages, they actually told us that they were bringing dinner over for us and then invited us to join them at a local hangout that evening. Besides the great hospitality at the house, pretty much everyone we encountered in Savusavu were extremely friendly as well. The house was well equipped, had amazing views and great people to answer questions, give guidance about the town, restaurants and things to do around the area. There is decent snorkeling right across the street. You can walk to the near by Jean-Michel Cousteau resort for drinks/food. If I ever make it back to Fiji again, I will definitely be staying at the House of Bamboo.

Breathtaking and beautiful views and little slice of heaven
The house is situated on a hill top. It’s bright and airy and has an island 🌴 vibe about it. The views is breathtaking and you just want to sit on the balcony or in the pool and look at the sea 🌊.
The house feels like a home away from home.
The staff are very friendly, efficient and engaged in making your stay the best possible.
I highly recommend this slice of heaven to everyone.

Incredible view, amazing property, wonderful people. Loved it!
My husband and I stayed in the house of bamboo for our honeymoon and we absolutely loved it. Jolene was waiting for us at the airport when we arrived and drove us back to the house. On the way she pointed out all of the places that we could buy the things we would need during our stay. When we got to the house her and Tom helped us carry our bags up the many stairs. The first time I saw that view at the top I was blown away, it is stunning! Well worth the climb. Jolene gave us a quick tour of the home and left us to it.
We spent the majority of our time in Savusavu at the house. We absolutely loved the pool. The fans kept the house cool enough for us even though it was very hot outside. We loved to sit out on the deck to eat our meals. After dark the bugs come out so we used the bug spray they provided which worked great. While we were there the pod house was empty for a few days so we were able to go in and look at that one as well. What beautiful houses. The Pod House is a different style, while it is beautiful and has a pool as well, we were glad that we chose the House of Bamboo. The view and pool make it the best. We rented the Kayaks twice, its great to get a view of the town and hills from out on the water. It is 125 stairs from the road up to the house, you definitely get your workout in! During our first trip into town, we had some culture shock, the Fijian way of life grows on you quickly. One evening we called ahead to Cousteau's and went down for a drink. We went on a ride to Labasa and back, stopping at the Cobra Temple, a village, and waterfall. We also went on a sail with Bruce, what an experience! The snorkeling is incredible, Fiji is abundant with reef! A lot of the beach near the house is rocky but we found that if you walk around the point of Cousteau's the beach is awesome. We spent time on the beaches in front of the house and resort.
We loved chatting with Bruce and Jolene whenever we came down to go to town, snorkel, or spend time on the beach. They are both friendly and fun to be around! We had a few medical needs during our stay and they did all they could to help. They always checked with us to make sure everything was working at the house and that we were enjoying our stay. Bruce has a sweet dog that we completely adored and giving her some love whenever we saw her was fun!
We are so glad that we chose the House of Bamboo for our stay in Savusavu. You can't go wrong with this house.

Great!
Jolene is very helpful & sweet. She picked us up from the airport and stopped at the grocery store on the way to the house so we’d have something to eat after arriving. She also happened to be heading towards the airport when we were leaving & gave us a lift back too. There was a nice starter pack when we arrived: fruits, juice, milk, bottled water & toiletries. The pool is fantastic and there’s a great view from it as well as the veranda. Outdoor lighting at the pool at night is minimal unless you use the large floodlight. The light in the actual pool was out & found out they were waiting for a new bulb from the main island. Unfortunately the daybed in the bure by the pool was unusable for us b/c birds would swoop in and poop on it and then ants would swarm it.
There wasn’t any a/c in the house, but it was still nice & cool with cross breezes – even at night. We didn’t have any issues with mosquitoes in the house but we made sure to keep the doors closed. The kitchen was well appointed & had everything we needed. Expect to have small ants & geckos in the house due to the tropical climate. Bug spray was provided. It's quite dark around the house which gives a sense of calming solitude but bring a flashlight if unknown noises & bugs at night weird you out. We found it relaxing. Overall, everything at the house was great.
Note that you may need to vacate the house at 9:00am if guests are arriving for that day. We ending up renting a day room at Daku resort which worked out very well. We hung out at the pool & were able to shower/get ready for our return flights home in the afternoon.

Amazing view - worth the walk up all the stairs.
Overall the impression was good, however, the property is showing a number of signs of age - Warping in the doors, which allows mosquitos into the house, the bure daybed needed a good cleaning, if you are planning on using the downstairs bedroom - be prepared for the pool pump and filter noise as it's right outside the window, the hot water is very hit and miss - mostly miss, & some of the fittings (blinds and fans) were broken. But wow! what a view, and the infinity pool is amazing

Second time here....can’t wait to return.
What a wonderful place. This was our second time to Savusavu and our first time staying at House of Bamboo Our first trip we stayed at The Pod House(Bamboo’s sister property). We found our 9 nights at Bamboo to be equally great and realized you can go wrong with either spot. We loved the pool of course and the views. The beds were comfy and the kitchen was equipped well enough for two chefs. Ceiling fans kept us cool in the evenings and we’ll screend windows kept any unwelcome bugs out. We mostly took taxis around and they were quite cheap to get to town when ever we needed. We loved being close to the Cousteau resort where I was able to access the dive shop for my open water certificate. They have two dives daily. Snorkeling directly in front of the property is very good and a short swim will take you to Split Rock and great snorkeling. We even loved the steps up to the house of Bamboo as this was pretty much our only exercise in 9 days of relaxation. Next time we visit we hope to rent both places and bring the family.

Spectacular place to explore savusavu
My sisters and i just returned from a few days in the bamboo house. The holiday was fantastic and the house was spectacular and a really great base to explore savusavu and beyond. Jolene and tom are really genuine and friendly with lots of good advice if needed and also give you space which suited us perfectly. Highly recommended!! Thanks Jolene!

The House of Bamboo is truly a paradise here on earth!
A beautiful location plus amazing people and superb accommodations equals pure bliss!! We felt that warm hospitality months before we stepped foot in Fiji, as we began communicating with the owner, Bruce. His love for the island shines through in the care he gives to his property and those who are lucky enough to rent it for a moment in time. The house itself gives you a sense of your own lil' private space on the island, yet the real beauty lies right outside your door. From dips in the infinity pool and endless sunsets to doing morning meditation and yoga on the deck, we found ourselves spending plenty of time just enjoying nature and its breathtaking view. Trekking up and down the stairs each day gave us a sense of adventure whether it was to grab a taxi into town to shop the outdoor market, or to take the SUPs and kayaks across the road to paddle the sea. We also had the opportunity to visit some beautiful villages with our friend, Tia, who gave us the experience an authentic kava ceremony and a swim in a tranquil waterfall. We can honestly say that allowing Kalesi to prepare you an authentic meal, getting a massage from Viri, or just having an afternoon chat with Jolene can bring a smile to your face. Each of these lovely ladies made our stay even brighter than we could have imagined. The House of Bamboo was the perfect getaway for us to really relax, escape...and just enjoy being in love while living life!

Amazing!
I've used Homeaway many times and I can say, without qualification, that House of Bamboo was the far and away the best accommodation I've stayed in. Here's why? Incredible views of Savusavu Bay! Fantastic property, including beautiful infinity pool, gorgeous front porch for dining and hanging out, very well appointed interior and very well equipped kitchen. All very clean and upscale. And if that is not enough...
Add to that the incredible responsiveness and friendliness of the hosts, Bruce and Jennifer, their onsite managers, Tom, Alyssa and Lewis. Then, there's the wonderful other touches. Snorkel equipment and kayaks available and of course the beach is right at your front door.
We also hired Kaleesi to create a wonderful Fijian meal for us.
All of this added up to an amazing stay with the gift of much-needed R&R.
thank you Bruce, Jennifer, Tom, Alyssa, Lewis and Kaleesi!

The House of Bamboo was my family's favorite vacation spot! The house is complete with everything you need but the real perks are the owners and their staff, the views and all the wildlife around the house. The coral reef just below the house is one of the best snorkeling spots around. Savusava is still a very genuine town with friendly faces and lots of fresh foods at the market. The pool is awesome anytime of day! So if you are looking forward to a true retreat from everyday life, the House of Bamboo in Savusavu is the place. :-)

Such a fantastic place, beautiful views with a relaxing balcony to watch the spectacular sunsets. The house has everything you could possibly need, from fully equipped kitchen to comfortable beds to a great pool for cooling off and taking a break from your book! Brad and Therese are fabulous hosts with nothing being too much trouble. Yes, there are a lot of stairs but for most people these won't be a bother and it is well worth the effort to have a house in such a spectacularly private place with views you can only dream of! We can't recommend the House of Bamboo highly enough and definitely plan to return!! Thanks Therese and Brad!!

As an active family of 5, this was an ideal place for us. The ocean was incredible, snorkeling just below the house was easy and beautiful. We had plenty of space, the pool was definitely a huge plus and we were close to town and to the Cousteau Resort where we went scuba diving daily. We had a great trip and would definitely stay here again.

We were 2 married couples and 1 single. 2 weeks from 28 July -11 August 2011. The house was wonderful, exceptionally clean, well maintained, spacious, ceiling fans in all rooms, and great showers, bath with heaps of hot water (gas). The pool and view were to die for. The kitchen was of a very high standard and a pleasure to work in.Super King beds very comfortable. Perfection to say the least!
Paliese and Vara came to the house to give incredible massages, Kelisie the housekeeper also came in one night to cook for us, beautiful meal. YUM.Pick and drop off to the airport, excellent and prompt. Taxis easy and cheap to get into town. 99 steps from road to house good exercise, however if you have trouble climbing stairs or have knee or hip problems, maybe these steps are not for you. Thats why there is a pool at the top, you need it!
Enjoyed the surrounding area very much, took a leap back in time. There is a book at the house with all details of the area on what to see, where to eat, etc. Read the guest book for all opinions on what one likes and dislikes. Good reviews!! If you want to eat at resort, just make sure you book well in advance. We loved the area and all the beaches, not much shopping to be had, buy your Duty Free alcohol before you leave Nadi, it's a bit pricy in Savusavu. Market fanastic and excellent quality.
Attention to detail at the house is very evident, well done Brad and Therese. Thank you for sharing your paradise with us.

What a fantastic holiday we had at the Bamboo House, We had the most relaxing time, reading a book by the gorgeous pool, enjoying superb sunsets and loving the well set up accommodation, we wanted for nothing it was all just so perfect. I loved the decor it was lovelier than I imagined, the bed was soo soo comfy, with beautiful bed linen .
We really enjoyed walking into town and being greeting with “Bulla” numerous times from the happy friendly people, the happiness of the villages became infectious and made us think that life did not need to be so hectic.
Thank you again Therese and Brad for all your recommendations and help on how to get the most out of our holiday, with lots of great places to see and great places to eat. We were so impressed with Seaview Cafe, the best curry I have eaten in a long while and so inexpensive and enjoyed one or two or three beers at the Copra Shed. The tour of the Pearl Farm was fantastic. Once again it was a wonderful holiday.
Not having visited Savu Savu before, it is definitely on my must come again list and sooner rather than later.
