Where Is Port Douglas Located in Australia?

An hour north of Cairns on the northeastern Queensland coast lies Port Douglas, a former fishing village turned tourist hub. Most visitors arrive in the area via Cairns International Airport, with bus shuttles and rental cars are available from the airport. The main downtown area is easily walkable, but transportation is also available within the town, and tour operators usually pick up at hotels and hostels.

What Is Port Douglas, Australia Known For?

Port Douglas is a charming yet swanky small town filled with boutiques, spas, restaurants, five-star resorts, and tour operators. Most visitors are drawn to either the rainforests or the Great Barrier Reef. The city is recognized as one of the most developed towns, with the closest proximity to the Reef. In fact, there are a few reef groupings that nearly touch the coastline. Popular activities include scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing, swimming, rainforest hikes, and world-class dining. The most popular beach is Four Mile Beach, with a few more options both north and south of town. Daintree National Park is an hour northwest of Port Douglas and is the oldest surviving rainforest in Australia.

  • Flagstaff Hill Lighthouse, Trinity Bay Lookout, and Four Mile Beach Lookout: On the north end of town, sitting at the very tip of the peninsula is a historic lighthouse and a casual walking path to Trinity Bay Lookout and Four Mile Beach Lookout. Views go out across the water, down Four Mile Beach, and inland to the rainforest. A lovely place to stroll and take in the sights, it is a perfect distance from the hustle of town without going too far.
  • Wildlife Habitat: At the south end of town is an award-winning animal sanctuary that is divided into five habitats across eight acres, showcasing native animals and encouraging visitor interaction. Featured animals include koalas, tree kangaroos, and emus. Tours and educational experiences include “Breakfast with the Birds,” “Lunch with the Lorikeets,” and “WildNight” nocturnal animal tour.
  • Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina: Along Wharf Street, not far from Anzac Park, is a large marina and up-and-coming social area. Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina is a nice place to wander and take in the scenery and yachts. Many of the reef tour operators are also based here, including a narrow-gauge, steam-driven tourist train.

  • Daintree National Park: A couple of hours north of Port Douglas is Daintree National Park, where you’ll find both Mossman Gorge and Cape Tribulation. The park is accessible by car, bus, or a tour. See the rainforest canopy by ziplining at Cape Tribulation, horseback ride through the forest to the beach, take a 4WD tour through Bloomfield Track, or enjoy the jungle waterfalls at Mossman Gorge. Guided night walks are also available for the brave.
  • Kuranda National Park: This national park consists of most of the land between Cairns and Port Douglas, including Kuranda State Forest, Kuranda West Reserve, and Kuranda National Park. Activities in the park include hiking, cycling, horseback riding, and scenic drives. Kuranda Village is a charming rainforest village offering plenty of scenic walks, heritage markets, galleries, restaurants, and entertainment such as Koala Gardens and Birdworld. For the most unique experience, take the train one way and the cableway the other for roundtrip travel between Cairns and Kuranda.
  • Great Barrier Reef: A famous UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral formation in the world and offers incomparable scuba diving sites. The reef is made up of groups of islands with varying biodiversity along most of the Queensland coast, getting closer to the coastline the further north it stretches. Different groups of islands tend to be better for different corals and marine life; they are not all the same. Tours depart from Crystalbrook Marina and can include a range of activities like sailing, snorkeling, or scuba diving. Some tours include lunch or dinner, while other boats have transparent floors and sidewalls for observation. Agincourt Ribbon Reefs and Opal Reef tend to be some of the most popular in the area.
  • Atherton Tablelands: Southwest of Cairns is a vast and rich plateau known for agriculture and eco-tourism. Atherton Tablelands is popular with mountain bikers, hikers, and adventurous families. The Crystal Caves in Atherton consists of a man-made network of five caves, built to display one man’s extensive crystal and fossil collection. The area is also known for chocolate and cheese. Yungaburra is known for crater lakes; while further south, Millaa Millaa, and Ravenshoe are known for epic waterfalls.

  • Four Mile Beach: An expanse of white sand beach that stretches south from Macrossan Street, at Four Mile Beach, you’ll find stinger nets and lifeguards, as well as sunbeds for rent. While lined with more palm trees than amenities, there are casual takeaway options and bottle shops nearby for a picnic on the beach.
  • Macrossan Street: Running from Four Mile Beach to Anzac Park, the tree-lined main commercial area of Macrossan Street is packed with restaurants, boutiques, cafes, and accommodations. Anzac Park is the site of the busy Sunday Market and St. Mary’s By the Sea is a quaint, white-washed, historical church in the park near the water that’s worth a quick look.
