I understand that sometimes things don’t go according to plan, but the lack of communication was upsetting . Check in was at 4pm and the door code was supposed to be sent at 3. I reached out after 4 because I had not received anything (I’m glad I did bc I doubt anything would have been relayed to us until we were at the property) and when I messaged they said that we had to book something else due to cleaning/ plumbing issues etc…. why was I not notified sooner? What if I had been outside?? They did nothing for me. Did not answer calls. It was a stressful situation and overall they were not helpful.

Some of the reviews had suggested the area was sketchy, so we were hoping things would be OK. Fortunately, they absolutely were. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with the location.
It's a 5-min walk from the Legacy Museum, which we highly recommend. There is a breakfast place around the corner and a park across the street.
Only complaint would be the train noise in the middle of the night, but it was a problem on one side of the house, not the other. Same with the traffic noise, though there was very, very little traffic late at night (heck, there wasn't much during the day, either).
It's an OLD house but nothing that was problematic. The bathroom has been redone, so that room is best. Not much to the kitchen. The living room had a very good "feel" to it. We were only there one night, but we relaxed in there before our dinner (at Vintage Year).
Definitely recommend this place!!

We enjoyed the front porch, beautiful wood floors and fireplaces alongside a modern huge shower with great water pressure! Beds were very comfortable in big rooms. Highly recommend if you like a historical vibe!

Host was kind and inviting to their home. Home is very rustic and historic touch. Our work crew enjoyed their stay and would have stayed again given the chance.

This is the home I always wanted, complete with front porch and swing. I wish we could have stayed longer!

On the as-best-as-I-got positive note:
Despite the message from owner in an email I received after my reservation/payment in full: “In the meantime if you have any questions please dont hesitate to reach out. I look forward to speaking with you!”, this owner only responded to my contact attempts on the day prior to arrival.
From my perspective: as a retired female, overall location is on the "sketchy" side for solo; although there is only on-street parking, the owner did place cones on the street in front to reserve the spot; the historical home has comfortable, functional updates.
Regarding communication with VRBO and owner:
after more than 2 weeks prior to the paid-in-full reservation, which was made about 7 weeks in advance, the owner still had NOT respond to my contact attempt through VRBO messaging, phone call (no answer, mailbox full) to number posted on VRBO, text, or email; after my arrival, owner later responded that the contact phone number posted on VRBO was incorrect – which doesn’t explain lack of response to messages sent through VRBO;
VRBO rep(s) were also unable to reach owner/received no response from owner; VRBO rep stated that the owner account appeared to be inactive;
the afternoon prior to my arrival, owner finally contacted VRBO for a 3-way phone call and ONLY then responded to my inquiry attempts to request a 1-1/2 earlier check-in OR that porch lights and some interior lights be left on for our late arrival.
There’s more, but no room to type…

The bungalow was very charming and in a great location to downtown Montgomery. There were some charming quirks like slightly uneven floors and outlets at floor level, but this was not an issue for us. The only issues we had were smaller beds (full-size) but because there were 3 bedrooms so we just used two beds. The only other issue was with the WiFi and that was addressed and fixed within 48 hours.
I highly recommend this charming bungalow if you are visiting Montgomery.

Everything was as stated in the ad - would definitely stay again

Our purpose in visiting Montgomery was to see the many civil rights attractions in the city. The cottage looked lovely online and was in a convenient location. When I arrived, I was absolutely charmed by the house and the quiet location. We could easily get to all the places we wanted to go and come back to this lovely house. It was comfortable and full of creature comforts travelers appreciate. My only complaint would be the living room furniture. The low back and height off the ground made it difficult for us due to our ages. Younger people wouldn’t notice and even so, I’d stay there again.

Host was great, super cool old home. Place was clean and comfortable. Traffic noise abit much and wouldn’t feel safe for a women traveling alone and no where secure to park your vehicle. I appreciated the place and it was definitely dog friendly.
Thanks

My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Cottage. The 130+ year old cottage was a gem. We would stay there again in a heartbeat.

kitchen limited to microwave and toaster oven. Do not plan on doing any cooking. Otherwise a charming old cottage in the Old Town section of Montgomery. Close to everything.

The house was well appointed with everything we needed and more. The furniture was comfortable, the bathroom was pleasant surprise with a fabulous shower and fluffy towels. The location is perfect.
The only problem was getting the code to the house. I called and emailed several times the day before with no response. Tara did answer her text at 3:30 pm on check in day, when I told her we hadn't gotten the code. She sent it to VBRO at 3 pm but it hadn't gotten to me. Happily, we did get in when we arrived after 4, but it was nerve wracking for this old lady.

Very poor communication with owner. Outside was in need of repairs. Exposed wires. Weak steps. Broken porch glider. Did not even open front door. Had my 85 year old aunt and did not feel it was a safe place or location.

This home is in a cool historic neighborhood within walking distance of Old Alabama Town. The surrounding houses are now offices so the neighborhood was quiet at night. The home is clean and cozy and includes everything you need. We ate breakfast at Cahawba House the next morning and loved it. There are lots of interesting historic sites near the restaurant. I plan to return to this house and explore more of the city.

This beautiful historic home was perfect for our stay while exploring Montgomery, short distance from many museums, restaurants, we also ventured out to the Alabama Safari park about 15 min away!
The owner was so helpful with a list of restaurants, we wished we could have made it to Cahawba House, we have to visit again soon.

We really enjoyed our stay here. The house is beautiful and Tara really made us all feel welcome. Even our dog had a bed ready and waiting for him. The house was clean and was big enough for our group, 4 adults, 2 children and a dog. Tara was also communicative and accommodating. We had a great experience.

We were traveling from Memphis to Tampa, FL after touring Graceland. We needed a place to stop and break up that long road trip. I know historic homes have their quirks and the fact that this home was built in the late 1800s, is part of its charm. We loved the location, loved the décor, loved everything about this little home. The only regret, we didn't stay longer! We will be back to stay longer and tour Montgomery.

the house was so cute and Tera couldn't have been a better host. the house had so much charm and was close to so much stuff to do. if you stay here, please go eat at Tera's restaurant, cahawba house! the staff was phenomenal and I had the BEST shrimp and grits. I plan to rent from Tera a lot more. I absolutely love this house and its charm. and the perk is Tera herself.
