Skip Hermanus - come to Gansbaai and stay here

During our trip on the Garden Route, we wanted to go sharkdiving, so we intended to pass by Hermanus. However, upon finding Benguela on Booking, we decided to pass by Gansbaai instead. What a great choice that was! We could book a sharkdiving experience via a recommendation of the hotel and had a wonderful stay too: (i) our room had a pool view and was spacious, (ii) the property lies in a very quiet neighbourhood, so although the pool lies next to a road, there is no noise as there is no traffic, (iii) the owner Jonathan is an excellent host that manages to find a good balance between his guests’ privacy and the social angle and (iv) the dinner he cooked for us and the rest of the guests was excellent - it was also a nice experience to meet some of the other guests and hear about their backgrounds and travels. We would definitely recommend!

Most rooms are situated around the pool, which allows guests from other rooms to look into your room when the curtains are not closed. However, it’s a small property so people generally just stay in front of their own room. Also, be aware that this is more like a Bed & Breakfast than a hotel. Finally, note that there are two (very kind) greyhounds walking around on the property. It’s lovely if you like dogs (like us), but be aware if you don’t.

Das Essen am grossen Tisch ist ein einmaliges und wunderbares Erlebnis. Hilfsbereites und liebes Personal.

Nice accommodation but not much to do there.

Very modern and very arty.

The windows need nets and not just curtains. You have to close the curtains for privacy (people walk by outside) which spoils the lovely views.

Понравилось абсолютно всё. Джонатан устраивает ужины, было просто безумно красиво и вкусно. Ужин однозначно советую брать в отеле, цена около 40$. Очень интересная подача самих блюд плюс дегустация вина. Вид из номера на залив шикарный, когда там киты наверное особо шикарный вид. В отеле все сделано шикарно и красиво. С удовольствием вернусь вновь. Спасибо Джонатан!

Comfort in an inspiring environment

Godfrey was hosting us as the owner/chef Jonathan was not present. He was welcoming and friendly and we were given the choice of a standard room and a king room. Of course we chose the king room. It was spacious and comfortable. And had sea view! The interior decoration of Benguela is from another world: lots of art and a mix of vintage and modern. Wonderful! Breakfast was good too.

Unfortunately we were at Benguela that one night that the chef was absent so we missed out at - what promised to be - an excellent dinner.

Everything. Jonathan is an extraordinary host. The minute we walked in, we felt like home. He welcomes us with an open heart. We also had the opportunity to experienced the fantastic five course menue. It was an unique evening. We really reccomend this special place. 11/10

We had a short and lovely stay. The host was informative and always available to assist.

Beautiful home and the host and staff are attentive and friendly. Breakfast is not conventional but you will enjoy it.

The interior design was just incredible, Jonathan did an amazing job with that and also was a wonderful host (and cook). If you have the chance book the dinner with him. Highlights recommended! Also the breakfast is something special to wake up to. And these are just the highlights all in all just an awesome beautiful place to stay

Fabulous… don’t overlook this one!

Fabulous host and staff from the moment we arrived. Beautiful property, modern, clean and service was beyond our expectation. We had the benefit of enjoying the ‘in-house’ dinner at the property. Highly recommended, don’t miss out! Food and drink was wonderful. Value for money exceptional.. don’t think we will have a better meal in S. Africa. Thank you!

Alawys a pleasure!

We have stayed at Benguela on at least two previous occasions and were not disappointed by our return vist. A friendly helpful welcome, comfortable room, eclectic art collection - lots of space. Pool looked lovely but still a little cool . Excellent dinner - Jonathan is a wonderful host, a great cook and very generous with his wine! Looking forward to our next visit

Luxurious in every way.

This guesthouse is luxurious and from the moment we arrived, we were treated like royalty. The staff were delightful and Jonathan, the owner, was fantastic. Totally loved our one night stay.
