Treat yourself to a wonderful stay, pristine location , nature n wildlife, adventure n relaxation.
Playa Nicuesa for sure is a gem which you immediately become aware of upon approach..It’s pristine location speaks for itself..unique tree house style lodge and rooms and overall ambiance tells of its sustainability efforts and respect for nature. The staff , guides, food , rooms ,amenities , service and comfort is high quality and superb ..the canopy of the dense foliage and intense sounds of the jungle with the howler monkeys engulfs you.Nighttime requires flashlights which the lodge can provide..There is always the sense of wildlife lurking around and we saw plenty from toucans, scarlet macaws, a variety of birds ,monkeys, iguanas, viper snake, boa constrictor ,spiders and I have no doubt so much more that our eyes and ears missed..One highlight was on one of our self guided trail walks we heard the panting and grunting of something moving thru the forest. My daughter had direct eye to eye contact with a black animal..when we got back to the lodge , one of the guides showed us pictures and let us know we encountered a tayra…the pretty beach is so close to the lodge and rooms..It is stoney n pebbly even walking into the water but all very tranquil..The comfortable seating area, cushioned loungers and hammock make for plenty of relaxation and viewing beautiful sunrises and sunsets…The convenience of grabbing a paddle board or snorkel gear and kayaks is a bonus..saw interesting fish including puffer fish snorkeling and on our river tour had dolphins accompany us and saw a big mahi mahi fish jump out of the water chasing a needle fish..Be sure to do the sunset boat trip to see the bioluminescence..we had 2 mango rooms an upper and lower for our family n enjoyed the forest views from the comfort of our balconys..the ceiling fan was enough and we had no problems with mosquitoes.. we did have a gecko, some ants , a spider n bats in our room but just embraced it all..the chef catered to our vegetarian and gluten free requests with scrumptious food..I hope to return
Nothing..all lovely..pura vida

Once in a life time location and experience, but not somewhere we'd visit again.
We visited Nicuesa because of its location, the opportunity to see wildlife and the commitment to sustainability. It delivered in all of these areas: we will never forget the boat ride to the hotel (it felt like being the first people to discover a new country) and the relaxation we felt from being so isolated and immersed in nature. The food exceeded our expectations and we were very well looked after by the kitchen staff. The guide who took us on a hike was very knowledgeable and friendly. It's nice that you can take paddle boards and kayaks out for free. The beach is raw nature but incredible. We watched sunrise and sunset every day during out stay, and couldn't believe how magical it was. Room cleaning was great. The yoga instructor and masseuse was lovely - really friendly, knowledgeable and personable.
Although we loved our stay and will never forget it, we were ready to leave after three nights and probably wouldn't return, because some key "home comforts" were missing for the price we paid. We appreciate this isn't a grand five star hotel and didn't want it to be, but the room was too much on the basic side. It reminded me of the rooms I've stayed in when I was travelling as a university student (poor lighting, dodgy wardrobe and the mattress and pillows were especially basic). As I said, we weren't expecting grand luxury, but eco tourism can be done in a luxurious way (e.g. many of the safari places in Africa). For the price we paid, we expected a bit more than a room that was literally just for sleeping. This was one level above camp-beds or a mattress on the floor. Staff were good overall (especially kitchen staff and the yoga instructor), but at times it felt like Niceusa was there for the staff and not the guests. For example, playing loud dance music when most guests were probably visiting to relax and listen to the nature, if anything. Also not being able to use a beach hammock all afternoon because one of the staff interns was using it, who also didn't help us with the kayaks and paddle boards (other staff did). We were surprised that there was no way to lock our room. We were told this is because Niceusa is a "family". Perhaps we're too British for our own good, but when someone says that to me, I think "cult", not "family"! To be honest, we didn't think about it much, but we were in a remote place with a bunch of people from all over the world who we'd never met before. I would have preferred a key and think lots of people would feel the same.
