Where Is Zermatt?
A cozy, picturesque enclave in the German-speaking Valais region of the Swiss Alps is Zermatt, known most famously for its iconic peak, Matterhorn. The town shares its southern border with Italy and is also very near the French border. Zermatt is the last stop on the Glacier Express coming from St. Moritz, but most visitors arrive by flight from Geneva, Zurich, or Milan then by train through Visp.
What Is Zermatt Known For?
A long-beloved glamorous resort town, Zermatt’s base elevation is over 5,200 feet, with the mountain peaks rising up all around. Monte Rosa is the highest peak in Switzerland at 15,200 feet, and both Theodore Roosevelt and Winston Churchill scaled Matterhorn separately in the late 1800’s. The town’s attractions focus on skiing, hiking, mountain biking, and mountaineering. Skiing is available year-round on the glaciers, thanks to the high altitude. For the less athletically-inclined, there are easier walks, spas, pubs, and scenic train or cable car rides. Fame and increased visitation have come at the cost of higher than average prices for similar adventures in the area. Zermatt is a car-free town with three main streets and smaller alleys used by pedestrians, electric taxi use, horse-drawn carriages, or special delivery. This equates to no air pollution and incomparable tranquility. The town is small and densely packed, making it easy to get around on foot. There are also a number of cable cars going from the village up the many mountains for spectacular, low-effort views.
A Quick Guide to Zermatt
- Gornergrat Railway: Gornergrat Railway is an alpine train rising to 10,000 feet in elevation that takes you to the top of Mount Gornergrat. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime train ride departing from the north end of the village near the main train station, but some enjoy taking the train to the top and hiking back down.
- Matterhorn Museum: Matterhorn Museum tells the story of the first ascent up Matterhorn in 1865, where four of the seven climbers lost their lives. The small, Swiss-chic museum displays the rope that broke, sending the men falling to their deaths. Other displays offer insight into the resort development that followed, as well as give you a look into local culture — especially during the 19th century when the village was just an impoverished, isolated settlement.
- Matterhorn Glacier Paradise: The world’s highest altitude cable car travels past four hop-on- hop-off stops to a panoramic platform on Klein Matterhorn where you can see 14 glaciers and 38 mountain peaks. At Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, you can enjoy lunch at a restaurant and see a carved ice tunnel with ice sculptures. Skiers can ski down from here into Italy’s resort, Cervinia. Plan to go on a clear and calm day as it is often shut down by wind or inclement weather.
- Forest Fun Park Zermatt: Forest Fun Park Zermatt is an adventure park at the south end of the village with ropes courses, zip lines, and suspension bridges set against a world-class backdrop. A place like this is sure to bring out the kid in anybody.
- Sunnegga: Known as the “sunny corner” of Zermatt, the mountain of Sunnegga provides unparalleled views of Matterhorn. Take the “Sunnegga Express” — a short underground funicular — to the observation deck, where there is a self-service restaurant, a playground, and a nice walk around the little lake. This is also the least expensive way to see Matterhorn up close!
Popular Destinations Near Zermatt
- Brig: Brig is the last stop for the major international trains before Italy and a stop on the Glacier Express. It is the biggest commercial center near Zermatt, only 30 minutes north. The small city is known for its 17th century castle, thermal baths, Swiss Guard museum, and the birthplace of the tasty dish, Cordon Bleu.
- St. Moritz: A posh resort town five hours east of Zermatt and the opposite end of the Glacier Express train is St. Moritz. In addition to boasting three ski resorts and three beautiful lakes, the town has hosted the Winter Olympics twice and is famously home to the Cresta Run: the only world-class bobsled run made of natural ice. The town offers much entertainment year-round including an outdoor ice rink that’s open from July through April.
- Geneva: On the southwest point of Lake Geneva and nearly encircled by the French border is the international city of Geneva. Geneva is French-speaking, though English and Portuguese are commonly spoken, in addition to many other European languages. There is much to take in including the ancient old town with its cobblestone streets set on a hill, the Italian-influenced Carouge, the Palace des Nations, the Quartier des Grottes, where the architects attempted to use no straight lines, and the Jet d’Eau water feature. Every corner offers something new to marvel at.

Due to the tiny size of the town, Zermatt is all one walkable neighborhood. There are accommodations, restaurants, boutiques, and galleries scattered throughout the town with roughly similar concentration. There are 126 hotels and over 2700 rental apartments in the village. Most visitors choose where to stay based on budget, availability, and where they want to ski, since all sites are fairly accessible to one another. The two main ski areas are Klein Matterhorn area and Sunnegga-Rothorn area. Overall, Zermatt has a mix of accommodations and restaurants for all budgets, but it’s good to keep in mind that prices and fees skew towards the higher end.
